by artist, original covered up copy etc i think you get my drift.....hopefully

allways enjoy reading threads about records so much knowledge and great stories on here

One record i bought off Dave McCadden no real story but it was 1975 and i took it to Our Tuesday night soul do at Nocturns in Manchester
i gave it to Richard Searling and asked him to play it he listened to it on his cans then played it
when i asked him for it back he wanted to buy it but it wasn't for sale
and i still done know wether it ever got recognition but it's a great tune and it's never to my knowlege been on youtube

My copy of Lainie Hill - Time Marches On was the copy that Ginger used to play as a newie at Cleethorpes, St Ives etc ....I bought it from him when Hammie declined the buy at St Ives late 70s..........Its a special record to me as I know its the copy I danced to at my first nighter

should be a good thread this. it never ceases to amaze me how often these so called "non hits" that we know and love are in poor condition. some of our classics can be found as bad as vg-- and scribbled all over, torn and worn. someone somewhere went to a record hop or a store, bought it and played it. for me the minter doesnt do it as its not the money in resale that some see as parramount. in perspective this lends to the train of thought potential was there somewhere and that the opportunities were not available to all. as we are now able to asscertain from books etc, just exactly what life was like back then, stax and motown tour as a case in point. a couple i have .....
the miracles. "a love you can count on" this was (hand written) dedicated to rheanne by smokey and signed saying " a song can never convey so much my dear rheanne, love forever smokey. ( $4.99 off ebay as "a couple of motown records) another is "angel" by the satintones dedicated to bettye from sonny, could this be sonny saunders and a girlfriend. for me this always adds another dimension to our music.

Picked a record out a sale's box the other week for a Fiver todays peoples s.o.s was in better nick than the copy i had so that was that, never noticed that there was a name in small print written on it (bit boozy), wasnt till a few days later that i had a good look at the record only to find that TONY HALLIGAN was written on it, Tony was my cousin (sadly passed many years ago) and a Wigan casino regular from Aberdeen, i never went to wigan etc to young but its went full circle and now sits happily in a box with a bit of sentiment too it.

recently got hold of a copy of - the deadbeats - no second chance - strata, many years after i first heard it played and as allways been one
of my favourites, what makes this copy alittle more special is that it is the original "phantom janitor" cover up copy aired by richard searling
still as the tape marks on the flip side, just makes you think how he must have felt playing this out for the first time and how it become part
of the history for our scene 30yrs+ ago........

I bought my copy of Stanley Mitchell's "Get it Baby" on Dynamo ISSUE
off Richard Searling on stage at Wigan DURING his spot, in 1973.

I was always pestering him for it but to no avail until one night he crumbled and said "OK a fiver"
but I offered him £3 and he parted with it.
All my mates were stunned and gutted when I showed them and they took it in turns to hold it and stare at it with their massive blocked eyes, all the way back to Sheffield on the train, muttering "jammy bastard".
Yep this was the first copy ever played anywhere as far as I'm concerned
- the one that started it all off!

Probably don't mean a lot to most folks but I own the original white demo copy of The Carstairs on Red Coach as played by Mr Levine at The Mecca from back in the day! I did have his original white demo copy of The Montclairs on Paula too but sold it cos it didn't have a B side. I do like the B side so didn't swap it for my own issue copy............I sort of wish I'd have kept both now

My copies of Masquaders - Same thing and M.B.S. - Another day have been covered up at one time in the past, both have the typical sellotapes in the run-out. Wonder who played them covered up?
Have a copy of Mike & Ray - if only you knew signed by them.
A few years ago I bought a copy of the Jimmy Witherspoon - Spoon in London on Ebay, described as WOL on cover. Turned out said WOL reads "Best wishes, Jimmy Witherspoon", nice one!

As an obsessive record collector, I'm always torn about writing on the label, even if it's by the artist or of some other person connected to the record. I have some interesting ones with some super-personal inscriptions on them, but for some of those I also bought a double with a clean label... They should have an episode of that OCD show on A&E about record collectors.

this is one which means a lot to me as it was one of my first big favourites which I still love to this day,

but what makes it so special to me, even though it has label damage and it a bit crackly,

is that I got it from my favourite ever, and sadly missed DJ and friend, The Mighty Bub.

Recently sold a copy of Bari Track. I DID notice something etched in the run out. Turned out I sold it to the guy who owned it 30 years ago AND it was his name on the run out groove.

I WON A COPY OF JOHNNY BRAGG THERE TALKING ABOUT ME OFF RUSS WINSTANLEY IN A DANCING COMPETITION IN THE MID 70S AT A LOCAL VENUE I WAS SO CHUFFED YEARS LATER I FOUND OUT IT WAS A BOOTLEG BUT I STILL KEPT IT STILL 1 OF MY FAV TUNES

On my copy of sleepless nights - paris which i got off a guy on the west coast is written the following

sleepless side "recorded at radio recorders hollywood" wednesday dec 2 1964. "singing in the background The vows, Lewis sisters, B Holloway, Frank wilson.
wishing well side "to david paris from the Paris Whoosie" "this is the first copy given to anyone"

Back in the early 70s I owned a copy of Donnie Elbert's 'Without You' on a UK blank label. It differed from the various released versions on Deram and New Wave in that it had a nice vocal and guitar demo, by Donnie, of a song called 'Come See Me' on the flip (not the Pretty Things/J J Jackson/Sandy Edmonds 'Come See Me', BTW).

It was, and still is, the only copy that I've ever seen or known about, so I was particularly gutted when it was stolen from me in 1972. I knew that I would recognise my copy if I ever saw it again, as I had, er, 'embellished' the label with some unique decoration on the A side. Not that I ever thought I would see it, or any other copy, again...

Fast forward 15 years or so to a quiet Sunday morning in Record And Tape Exchange in Camden High Street. I'm in the basement, idly flicking through the 10p singles that stretch almost from one end of the room to the other when what should appear before me but my very own copy of this 45, looking much the same as it had done when last I saw it!

Needless to say I became reunited with it immediately - but to this day I still wonder where it lived between my two periods of ownership and how many hands it had passed through in the decade and a half that separated them...

Still in Camden, I once bought a copy of Wade Flemons' Vee-Jay album up there some years ago, with a sizeable length of masking tape stuck on the back cover. It took me a couple of years to pluck up the courage to try to remove it, fearing that I would either uncover a tear, or make one of my own. When I eventually pulled it off, wriiten underneath in ink was 'Release on BUY - Tony Hatch'.

In the early 60s Top Rank Records had a mid-price label with a BUY prefix, and Tony Hatch (the same one who wrote 'Downtown' 'Neighbours' and the 'Crossroads' theme, among others) was the label manager. That Wade Flemons album never did come out over here and it occurs to me, then and now, that I might have ended up with the intended dubbing source and that the release didn't happen because someone swiped the album back in the day...

My copy of Shirley Edwards on Shrine was the copy Ion loaned to Dave Thorley to play at Stafford, it has the label missing from the 'Dream' side, over the years a few people have offered high def label scans which I could stick on, however I;m just fine with it like it is.

Interesting... got a few Demo's date stamped which I like-some don't-as it gives an history.

Also got a demo copy of Cleo's Mood - Junior Walker -which is stamped " Coast to Coast", which I like to believe was used in the Lenny Henry thing of the same name from a few years back( probably isn't though )
