Starting this topic because at our party out here in California we play a real mix of things from the 50's thru the 70's including the rare and the not so much as well as soul, funk, rockabilly, doowop, girl groups, etc etc. I know that many DooWop tunes have made it on to the floors around the world of soul dancing and I'm mostly wondering if the community here has any recommendations.

and of course I'm aware some aren't big fans of this sound so feel free to slagg as well !

I also play a lot of girl groups, early 60s on. I also play slower and more midtempo early stuff (as opposed to the "popcorn" sounding stuff above) but less frequently.

Always loved group sounds and definitely partial to a bit of doo-wop too. These probably have a foot in both camps although more on the soul side in the main, definitely doff their caps to what went before though. So, off the top of my head (some on the 'rare' side and some not):

I think the Carl Lester is becoming popular now, it was just a random record before but I'm starting to see it on people's lists, priced a little higher, etc. FYI that's the first rivingtons record.

obviously the first 3 are very hard and expensive. the dem iii is hard but not as expensive, have seen a few copies for sale over the last 4-5 years. It's so lo-fi it's hard to listen to though (both sides). I managed to get that west coast distributors 45 too (which doesn't even sound like soul to me) but have never seen the tandells on Jam-Cha.

no, the baton master record is much later in the decade. it came right before the liberty records (which hit with "papa oom mow mow" and "the bird's the word")

the Tandells is a girl group. The Dem III has a really slow side "lonely guy" and an uptempo side "i got a woman". I like both sides but the "I got a woman" side is very messy. Supposedly Dem III are the same group as the Magicians, but I'm not sure.

1959-1964 were great years for transition from R&B to Soul. I like THOUSANDS of songs from those years (Much much much more than cuts from 1965-1969-and I only like, perhaps a handful of cuts from 1970-72, and maybe only one made after that ("Right Back Where I Started From"). There are way, way , way too many to start listing them (virtually everything released by VJ, Chess, Motown, Anna/Checkmate, virtually all the Popcorn and Beach cuts from that period, all the Brill Building written cuts from then, etc. The Volumes, Dukays, Five Quails, Royal Ravens, Serenaders, Poets, Caravelles (Harry Gates), Dynamics, Sheppards, Victorials, Barbara Green, Barbara Lewis, Jive Five, Marcels, Four Buddies (Van McCoy group), Chaunteurs/Presidents, Billy Butler & 4 Enchanters, etc. come to mind.

I like the little d and the harlems a lot even though it's one of many early soul tracks that sound like "stand by me". I saw it on the original pre-josie label recently, I don't know if I've even seen that before. I don't know the other two tracks, will check them out. Thanks.

Little D my buddy has, dunno why I never hear him play it, so good!
That Rickie and the Hallmarks is fabulous

reminds me of some of the later Italian doo-wop stuff.
one we play a lot in that vein is Stormy Weather by The Four Casts (ha)
