Just so everyone knows, this event will be more skewered towards contemporary black music of most types throughout the last 45 years but won't emphasise any particular era. Just to give some background on this, Paul Schofield used to be the DJ @ Primos in Leeds, the only club north of Manchester and Liverpool that played contemporary Black music and new U.S. imports to a multi-racial crowd in the early 1970's. I used to bump into Paul @ Jumbos in Leeds when we were both buying records and it turned out he lived in Mirfield, roughly about half a mile from where I lived. So we became good mates. He was playing contemporary funk and soul whilst I was playing Northern but I often went to Primos before going on to Wigan or Cleethorpes.
In 1976 when I came back from the U.S., we re-opened the Central and started a Friday night contemporary Soul/Disco/Jazz-Funkj night which was the best in the UK for music and atmosphere and was incredibly successful up to 1979. The place to be without a doubt. Brilliant times!
Anyway, Paul and I have done some magical gigs recently, primarily in Ibiza over the last couple of years, but also some rocking parties in the UK and France. The way we like to play is to double-deck and be completely eclectic. So we never know which way we're going to go on any night. Quite often, we'll chuck a tune into the mix which will change the groove entirely and keep us on our toes!
So don't be expecting much Northern or even Modern soul at this gig. It'll be a broad spectrum but it certainly won't fall into any convenient catergory that's for sure. Hell, even we won't know what we'll play until we start LOL. I'm really looking forward to it 'cos Distrikt is a stones throw from the original Central, so it'll be like a lovely re-union some 35 years later.
And it's FREE! What's not to like....
