Som Records, 1843 14th Street Northwest is probably the best in Washington.

I need to get to Val's sometime soon.

Don't you need an "in" with Val to for him to let you browse?

There's lots of things you need in order to 'browse' with Val, not least a skin as thick as a Rhino...

And there's absolutely no way you can doorstep him - he'd throw a fvcking eppy.

His prices start at $20, so if it's a cheap record your after you've no chance.

If you are wanting big 'known' Northern, you've no chance - Chuck uses the book to price.

I haven't put this to paper(or computer) until now. I've only been to the states once, about 1978,with Rob Lythal, and we visited Val Shively.Records found, Joanne King-My baby left me(schoolteacher I do believe), Cooperettes-shing a ling(demo),Corvairs-ain't no soul, but more to the point, it was how to look. Every record filed away, probably no wonder, why you need a few days.Woe be tide anyone who puts a record back out of place. But you know, when he's closed shop, he's a different man, pure family orientated.

Val is a great guy, all this fairytales about him are imo are just because some people don't want anybody going there. maybe to have a connection for their own? not sure about that....
I deffo enjoyed the two days at his job and we had lots of fun, i made some bargains and bought some records for a fair price, what else can i want?

I have never dealt with Val (apart from sending want lists to the email address advertised in discoveries and getting no answer). The people I know that are friends with him say he's a great guy. But I do know random people who just tried showing up and he said they needed a list of records they wanted and that they couldn't just browse.

when you see these guys working in their shop i can guess why someone don't get a response to the wantslists ;-)
val stands inbetween piles and piles of 45s, papers and other stuff messed up in a huge room full records. besides tries chuck to sort some of the 45s which get unsorted again when the graildigger get in.....
