Last Motown Song At Wigan

I'm sure this has been asked before but can anyone settle an argument between a few of us at our club. I wasn't there so can't answer it but ....

What was the last Motown record ever played at Wigan Casino?

We had the usual banter about what is considered as a Motown track i.e. Soul, Tamla, Tamla Motown etc but have still not come up with an answer. Some say Do I love You, I thought it was Ghost in My House?

Cheers for what may be a much asked question.

No,

He played it again and again at the request of the crowd, who were anything but bored. In fact they were having the time of their lives actually being present at the end of an era.

Yet more negative vibes about Wigan. Will this campaign against Wigan, Levine or anything that has been popular in the past ever end?

In a word Brian No, and it's not a campaign against Wigan as such, but the end was a farce. And an hour of Frank Wilson?

I think you will find that most of the regulars had already made their minds up not to return after the September 'last night',(myself included)........By this time it really was just a piss take,a sad,sad way for Mr Marshall to bin a few more quid at the expense of the club's dignity. The crowd there may not have been bored but most of the former regulars certainly were.

You're right Martyn. The last one for me was the final Oldies niter, Sept 4th? Couldn't be bothered with all the ones after that.

Yeah, its a shame they didn't just drop it-its kind of tainted some of my feelings toward the club even today, I will still defend it to the death when those who didn't go start slaging the place though

Which final all-nighter? The final one, the final final one, or the very last one?:lol:

At the proper official all nighter in September, it was I'm On My Way played more than once at the end (there are recordings around). At the final oldies all-nighter in October it was Do I Love You (over and over again). It was gone 9.30am on both nights and believe me nobody wanted to move.

When I heard they were doing one in December, I and many others purposefully avoided it. I gather the place was half empty, damp, dirty and full of empty coke bottles from the October niter! Thank God I didn't go....it would have ruined the precious memories.

The last motown record played at the Official last niter (in September) I wouldn't mind betting was Barbara McNeir You're Gonna Love My Baby (that just a guess, unless anyone knows better) :D

Sorry Mark but I would guess that you are not unique on this.It certainly changed all of our lives forever(even Mel Brat keeps slaging it off  ,so it is still a major force in his life  )....As I stayed away from the last 2 nighters as a mater of principle,I will take your word that they "were two of the best nighters you have experienced".I do feel that those who patronised those last 2 nights would have been better served joining others at The Fleet or Cliffton Hall or any other nighter that may have clashed - Keeping the Faith rather than flogging a dead horse.

I'm sorry if this line of thought causes offence, but as a grumpy old t**T who spent many a night buzzing around the Casino in my youth,I was happy watching the cow being milked but I would be buggered if I was going to hang around to see them cut its throat.

no offence to me martyn in the slightest

i only went 3 times im no judge on 8 years of wigan and have never professed to be

but i have the playlists from the casino and know there were some FAB tunes..

the 3 nights i did go to however were the end of an era and the 2 oldies nites after and they were all great nites...it didnt help i suppose when the first record i heard when i looked over the balcony was 'night to remember'...went both the fleet and clifton hall so have the best of all worlds....

all great memories..

Its a pity it ended like this. However, overall it brought at least 200k fans into this scene, good and bad.

If you went, you would understand the power it had, just celebrate its good times. 4me - Rated A* for atmosphere.

At the official 'last nighter' I would agree that it would have been B.McNair from Brian Rae, then Frank Wilson included in Russ' last set. It was at the end of the December nighter that F.Wilson was played after the official end at 08:00.

Same here Martyn,i managed to get to the last few years of the Casino and will rightly defend the place. There's too many slagging the place of lately and like you said most of em probably didn't even go,yes it went through phases but its hard to appease the same crowd.

Rally has put some great pics up on youtube  .

Some nice photo's there, and this isn't an anti Wigan thread as far as I can see. Just the thorny old debate about the last allnighter shambles.

This certainly wasn't an anti Wigan thread or a debate about the final niters. We were just trying to clear up which was the last Motown song played - I wondered whether members of the forum would differenciate between the Motown labels etc (including British). I only managed to attend twice because of my age at the time but remember the overwhelming feelings and amazement at the place. Cheers.

That's why my last night at Wigan was in the

June...... and Brian Rae played.. The Isley Bros..

Tell me it's just a rumour... I'd rather remember that than what i've heard went on after

Frank Wilson did get played to death,so for me the last motown record to be played at WIGAN was the above.... and i danced my arse off to it  .

It was Frank Wilson of course.

And everyone who deliberately stayed away from Wigan All Nighters decided that even if Frank himself walked up and gave them a genuine original they would say no because it's a handbag record and not as good as the soulpack stuff that passes for Northern Soul these days.

I wonder how many full-time Wigan critics actually set foot in the place? If they only went once they can't really comment and if they went regularly why did they bother if they didn't like it?

i LOVED WIGAN... think you're right bout what you've said.. my last night was due to me coming back to Ireland not through choice.... another thing i loved Do I Love You..it's just it was overplayed imo... I would never say anything against The Casino it was my church for many years.... After June 81 i dont know what happened.just seems everybody has had a pop at the old girl..... for me it will always be the ultimate place to have worshipped.... You're spot on to bout the soul pack thing... Kev
