Last saw me losing my Attic virginity ( stop it : it is not big , and it is not clever ) .........

My first visit was a very pleasant and enjoyable one , with , as the advertising states for the venue , a music policy of airing creditable and underplayed sounds , which provided a first rate soundtrack to the evening ........

I had intentionally gone to catch up with , and hear the set of the Barry Fry of the decks , Peterborough's Paul Donnelly ( first rate spot ) , but I was impressed with the other DJs - The Attic Crew - with their choice of records :whistling: ........

It was also enjoyable to meet , and talk to fellow SS'ers  .........

It is venues like the Attic , and the attitude towards the scene of the promoters , that will ensure the continuation of our / the music in the future ........

Missed last night due to being in sunny Bamberg but could'nt help wondering how it was going at The Attic.

Some of the posts in the last week had left me with lots of questions!! This was sounding like it was going to be the rudest Attic yet ( is it a soul night or a rap night?.Would Paul Donnelly match up to super sized Dean? Would Sister Dawn still get turned on by Paul Weller having met our on Big Paul. Would Gary be able to keep everyone there until the end.

Looking at Malcs post seems like it was just another top quality night as usual.

See you all on Friday

Mark

PS just off for a soul and sausage session (whatever that is ) !!

Thanks to Malc for the positive comments. I feel like I owe him and several others a sincere apology. Paul Donnelly introduced me to Malc at a time I had virtually no voice at all and any communication was painful. I would've really like to chat but just couldn't. Maybe you got off lucky Malc.

What a great pleasure to have Paul Donnelly in. Probabaly best summed up by someone quite close to him " He hasn't lost his take no prisoners style has he", he certainly hasn't. A great, very balanced spot, taking us through some of Paul's great music experience. Some Torch classics, some not heard out for an age, the same with some of the more Wigan tunes, some classics and some not heard by me since those doors closed. As ever with Paul D you get the affordable greats mixed in with those out my pocket's reach by a Fen country mile, and his sets are better for that, playing what he wants to entertain not to impress how much he's spent, (or perhaps just had since before they cost a footballers salary).
No matter how long the Attic lasts last night will last as a truely great soul night in Mansfield.
Similar apologies to Sister Dawn, Mick and Ray - really good to see you just couldn't chat to let you know.

I personally thought Kev H's early spot was better than his last spot last time (and that was great) - but that's just my taste. Garry did a very laid back low tempo last spot that was absolute quality, if only he could learn to use a mic! Steve L pulled out a couple of bigger sounds along with his lesser played favourites, and was as reliable as he always is. Those lads are up at Lifeline as I post, sorry couldn't make that due to family concerns . . . . . . . still wouldn't be able to chat to anyone - hope to make it up for the evening.

Enough ramble - here's a dozen from my squad rotation 8.30 - 9.15 spot:

Edward Hamilton - Baby Don't You Weep (Mary Jane)
Edward Hamilton - Thank You Mother (Mary Jane)
Lesley Gore - No Matter What you Do (Mercury)
Tony Middleton & Bobby Matos - Already Satisfied (Speed)
Milt Grayson - Something That Gets To Me (MGM dj)
The Ones - "Happy Day" (Motown)
Billy Proctor - I Can Take It All (SOUL)
Hank Jacobs & The TKO's - Speak To Me In Your Soulful Way (Call Me promo)
The Precisions - You'll Soon Be Gone (Drew dj) - all rights channel 4!
Dry Well - Gypsy ( Lauren)
The Exciters - You Know It Aint Right (SHOUT promo)
The Parfays - You Got A Good Thing Goin' Boy (Fontana)

Thanks to all who made the journey, good to see some stylish dancers in too. Sorry I wasn't in top form for a top night, enjoyed it anyway. Biggest thanks to Paul Donnelly, see you soon at DKoF.

Mormar44, see you in the Chamionship, bring on the Derby derby!!

Sorry I missed this, it sounds like a top night
I had planned to go but somehow ended up with an unplanned visit to the Wilton (arriving at 4:00 ) and ended up knackered and asleep, which didnt go down well with my wife who had been getting ready for the previous 2 days ( well that what it seemed like to me ) only for me to tell her I was too knackered to go

Defo be there for the next one

I had a time transformation last night that took me back to the halcyon days of the Torch, The Wheel, The Casino and The Pier plus others that housed the biggest all dayers and nighters back in the day, where Djays filled the floors with tunes that could send dance floors into the zone, and tunes that could rip out your heart with spine tingling vocals, Played by them with a passion and a knowledge of the music and the ever eternal quest of searching for those that made the grade.
In 2008 thankfully the etiqutte and the intrepidness set by the past and its Djays still exists here in the Black Bull Inn, up there in the Attic. If you are expecting the ''same old / same old'' in your soul then this is a place not for the tried and tested and hammered out every week in many soul venues up and down the UK, but its for those tunes that in my book is the roots on which we were fed in those early days, Dri Well's Gypsy (when was the last time you heard that played out at a venue) on Lauren, its original label not on some carved lump of worthless plastic! This tune plus many many others that were pure soul took me back and instigated some sweet fond memories. Each set from the lads one after the other of brilliant sounds all with that same quality, it was so good for me to hear these sounds again, and I can't for the life of me, understand where the hell many of us went wrong in the past decade of playing out some of the dross that we do, when we have had quality like the caliber that was played here tonight for so long.
These Attic lads certainly know their stuff without a doubt and maybe if you are a promotor or Djay you should go here and listen to what has been missing from your play boxes for so long, go home and put away the 'same old' that gets played week in and week out and get out the stuff that truely deserves to get played again.
Paul Donnelly played a cracker of a set mixing in his cheap as chips with the oh my god if only I could win the lottery tunes.
Now Paul has stated that he is going to put his tunes away for a while, I know his reasons but sorry Paul, this scene needs people like yourself to ensure that top quality soul is played and heard by those of us that really do appreciate it, to put them away in a box for an unspecified period is no good at all and is indeed sacriledge, please reconsider, I did!. It was good to see you all again, and we shall be making the trip down to the DKOF asap.

Top tunes of the night for me, oh my god there were so many, just wished I had taped it all, and replayed it again today :D They were all top tunes they truly were.
So to finish, thank you so very much for a great nite, we will definately be back next month. I could carry on and wax lyrical all night but I would just get boring, if you havent been to the Attic yet get there as soon as you can, it puts the soul back where it belongs.

Dawn, don't know what to say. That's one of the best compliments we've had, makes it all worthwhile with posts like that. Its hard with knowledgable people around to know if you're on the right track(oops). But really we're just doing what we think should be played.
Lots of new faces in attendance, great to meet Malc Burton after all this time  .

Paul Donnelly,,,what can you say.Fills the room in more ways than one.Honoured to have him on at THE ATTIC.
Maybe could have done with more dancefloor appreciation, but at ours its not just about dancefloor, its quality from our guests.PLAYLIST PAUL?

Thanks to all who keep coming up the stairs...can't do it without you.

Great night had by all. Hospitality second to none, always a warm welcome especially from the girls on the door (dont forget the girls on the door) + when presented with the 4th guy up the stairs with a record box saying "I'm Paul Donnelly" (bit like the famous scene in the Spartacus film) they were having none of it!! £3 promptly handed over - its a long way down them stairs!! Great set from Paul Donnelly as we all expected it would be - playlist Paul!! Plus I really enjoyed the set Steve L played - post up a playlist as well as I forgot my Bic biro. What was that record Steve you played - Mike.....something ... on a blue lable/silver writing, that had a few heads over the turntables. A nice feature for the Attic - being able to get up close to the decks, close enough you can sniff the vinyl as it goes round! Also good to see Big Paul pushing his signed photo's from his CH4 appearance! Well done Kev and the Attic Boys.
