I think Nik & Steve have just about covered it, a good mix of the old & new, which kept the dance floor busy all night........300+ on the South Coast is a major result in a brilliant venue, partucularly with a music policy that isnt exclusively 'oldies'. Nik has got the blend of music just about right, with a good balance, Butch with some underplayed oldies, Jonah mixing up the soul n RnB flavours, the guests generally providing the more eclectic choices & Nik finding the balance for the last hour or so & keeping the floor happy with the requests. Didnt spend too much time in the Modern Room last night as I was listening to what the Jocks were spinning in the main room prior to my set, but as Steve mentioned seemed very busy when I popped my head in. Its very refreshing from a personal point of view to have longer sets for the DJ's, too many tend to have a plethora of DJ's in a night & no one can really build a set, four DJ's with 75 mins a piece was brilliant.
In conclusion a really enjoyable night both musically & socially, being only the second event the venue is still evolving & growing, but potentially with Nik at the helm this is just gonna get even better..........the next Bank Holiday Sunday will be another night to remember with the Dave Greet spinning the vinyl tacle upstairs, one of the best & under used DJ's in the country, we're gonna be in for a treat thats for sure.
Thanks again to Nik for a great night & to Steve, Dave, Jas & Liz for the brilliant company.........also good to see a few faces too, had a great chat with Roger Stewart & everyone I spoke to had a blinder.
The bongo driven tune was Ebony Jam - Ride On Nik...........seems to do the business where ever I play it, last night no exception.
Also played:
The Smmits - Sophisticated Lady
Johnny Praye - Cant Get Too Much Love
21st Century - Shadow of a Memory
Charles Mintz - Running Back
Superlatives - Dont Let True Love Die
Chuck Cockerham - Have I the Right
The Ascots - Just a Few Feet From the Gutter
Bonnie Blanchard - Your the Only One
Lee Fields - Take Me Back
Harvey Averne - Never Learned to Dance ( By Request)
The Mighty Marvelows - Talkin' Bout Ya Baby
Art Benton - Sweet Loving
Clyde McPhatter - Lonely People Can Afford to Cry
Roy Roberts - So Much In Love
Thats just about covers it I think with a few classy oldies & couple of seventies thrown in for good measure.
See ya at the end of the month for another hoofin' night.
