I'm sorry :D but this venue does not fall into any cat but "Disco".
Im not pulling any when I say this has got to be the worst night of all  .
Billed as Classic northen soul and Motown ;) ,does this guy even know what classic is.please please do not bill your event as classic if you are gonna play 70's disco tracks to a dancefloor full of handbaggers.
For what my bits worth my appolo's for the outbust but when I pay good money for a taxi and venue entance I expect to hear whats billed and not what was played.
This venue is a disco and nothing more, dont get me wrong this might be just what you are looking for if you like a bit of 70's disco.
Classic soul and Motown this is def not.
IMO stay away and dont waste your money.

I was there for the first time in months on Saturday before nipping down to Six Hills, and had a good time (thanks to Bear and his mates for the kind welcome).

It's fair to say it's not a purist's night, and anyone going expecting a terrific NS night like The Shed (which like you, I was at on Friday) is going to be disappointed.

OTOH, it's a nice mix of NS favourites and mainstream stuff (personally I'd rather hear 'Needle in a Haystack' than some deservedly obscure Northern floor-clearer).

It's also worth bearing in mind that the Festival is a good entry point to the scene for those new to it.

Last year I turned up there searching for something danceable off the ugly town-centre nightclub scene, and was surprised and delighted to see big blokes spinning and splitting, and clearly completely *devoted* to some wonderful music, much of which was new to me.

Anyway, it got me hooked, I followed the leaflets on the tables, so for this NSer at least, it was a great night.
Come on young 'uns, foot it featly!

I was there Bank Holiday first time for months and months maybe a year. Yep definately not a purist's night as you said but when you have record decks in front of you then why put on CD's and pretend to be using the decks............. and most of the CD's were copies............... Well, I don't know about the DJ's allegedly dodgy practices; and I agree with Mark's original complaint that it isn't a normal NS event, though calling it a disco full of handbaggers is overstating it somewhat.

I reckon the promoter is either canny, or confused, hence the mixed policy.

FWIW I've seen it promoted variously as "Northern Soul and Motown", "Classic Soul and Motown", etc.

Now where did I put my badge and warrant, might need to serve another at festival.
Hi Gary,chilled now.
Can't go too overboard as we have had some great nights but last week was more of a disco.
I'll no doubt see more nights there and just hope for more of whats billed.
Cheers Gary see you soon
Mark.

Hi Spirit,
Yes agree it is a good entry level venue but having said that its Northern soul and Motown that we expect and my beef is that there seems to be more and more tunes that do not fall into that cat.I understand that the DJ plays to the crowd and tries to keep the floor full, even some of the "non soul and motown" tracks still get a good dancefloor.DJs job is to keep the dancefloor busy so the punters return,he does that.I am not going back on what I said,it is billed as Classic Soul and Motown and I guess I just expected to hear more of what was billed.
Mark.

Hi Tracy,
Can see where you are coming from as I know you and Andy Collect and pay good money.
If I had a collection I would feel the same but mine went many years ago when I got a taste for beer and Rob Smith opened his wallet,a bit like his shop it took him half an hour to find his money.

I am not asking for anything that would clear the floor, just need a few more of the classics. There are some great venues out there where I can enjoy underplayed and more obscure Northern and Motown.

I just want what it says on the tin,or a least a bit more than he played.
Can't fault the venue, people are great, drinks are good prices so please DJ if you are reading this a little more of what is billed if you please.

Hi Spirit, yes,I can see the overstatement, handbaggers was perhaps a word better not used, sorry.
Maybe in hindsight I should have waited till the booze wore of before starting the topic, thing is I might of forgot come the morning.

Well I better make this my last post on this topic,
Bit worse for drink when I started the topic so a few words might have come across a bit strong.
Just to point out that when I said this was the worst night,it was.
We have had some great nights there but lately inc Bank Holiday it seems the music policy has gone out the window.
There is nothing wrong with 70's disco if thats your thing,I dont mind hearing it as it brings back good mems but its not what I go there to dance to..
On a weekend when we decide where to go we will look at the events and music policy and we know what we are getting,we can have a dance and a good time and not too much booze.
Well thats my bit,its out my system now, said what was on my mind.
Mark.

Hi Mark,

Thanks for the clarification - I agreed with your basic point about the music policy not reflecting what you would expect from a normal NS event, and hopefully I'll bump into you at some point at one of those.

I haven't been for 5 years but when I was there it was well attended and they played MOR Soul, safe stuff although the guy was playing vinyl and did play Candy by The Astors when I requested :D
DJ had a whacky name "The Man Himself" big up or what? :D
No doubt it could well serve as a Soul Apprenticeship for the newer/younger devotees(maybe)
