Hi all
Thanks to everyone who turned up on the night, it was a hot night but the comfortable venue made it easier. A big thanks to Wulfie and a last minute guest, Jock from Scarborough (sorry jock I didnt get a photo of you for the album, but you are there in heart and soul). Big thanks to Jill, Pat and Ian who did the door great job folks. Tremendous thanks to Allison who allowed us to use the Blue Bell and is looking forward to the next one. I didnt get to talk to eveyone sorry, but there where soulies as far a field as Newbury (Ian & Hannah thanks), Redcar, Wolverhampton, thanks for supporting us. I did hear of one complaint that there wasnt enough Northern Soul played, I thought we gave an even balance to both N.S. and Tamla.

Really enjoyed the visit to the Yorkshire Wolds - had a great journey up from the Midlands ( singing to myself to old cassettes as my Cd changer is not working in the car right now)

Arrived to find that my host was not answering his phone, so went straight to the venue and immediately felt the warmth of the landlady of the Blue Bell - Maxine, who herself is a keen soulie and goes as often as possible to venues and weekenders around the East Coast.

before I even got thru the door, bumped into Jock and Gina from Scarborough, whom I'd met at Newquay last year and it would have seemed churlish not to have sat in the sunshine and enjoyed a beer or two with them - I'm not churlish

The Blue Bell is a tidy venue, not massive, with numbers limited to approx 120 due to Fire regulations, neatly laid out with a bar at one end and stage/dancefloor at the other. Toilets are down a corridor to the one side of the bar (which is actually built as a boat if you pay attention - which I didn't as I was more interested in what came over the bar than it's design)

The added bonus for me was that the venue has a lovely seated smoking area directly outside so I could smoke and chat and still hear the music inside, and on such a warm evening it was really pleasant to do just that.

I was quite suprised to see a varied crowd of around 70-80 attend the night, made up of probably around half a dozen couple intrigued by the article in the Driffield local newspaper which wrongly advertised it as a Motown night, and it's just as well that Russ collects that side of things cos I'd not taken too many with me.
The remainder were a collection of local soulies and about 15-20 late teens/early 20's who again showed an interest in the music and even made an effort to try out their own style of northern dancing - part of the dance floor was hidden from the main tables and they congregated there and it was refreshing to see them give it a go.

Musically it was a varied selection throughout the evening - Russ, Jock and myself did 30 minute sets between 8 and Midnight - then basically triple decked for what was supposed to be the last hour - but extended into almost two hours, though we had to close the doors and lower the music marginally.

I took the opportunity to mingle and chew the cud, as I've not been to many Yorkshire soul venues as yet and have heard some good things about them. At this point I admit to cheating a bit too, cos if someone raved about a tune I'd try and slide it into my next set.

Jock was amazing, spinning some bits and pieces that I'd not heard - and obviously enjoyed himself in doing so - which in turn generated enthusiasm within the crowd.

Russ chilled out too, and didn't stick to standard Motown stalwarts - but dug out some class spins, including a Marvin Gaye acetate which is currently well popular.

All in all a friendly and enjoyable evening in good hospitable company, nice to chat to loads of folks though no names recalled, and thanks for the invite - by the way the photo's were taken at the START of the night - not half way through
