Made my bi-monthly trip up to Lowton to revel in the two rooms of delights that contribute to make this a 'Must-Do' regular monthly soul nite.
The BIG difference for me, this time around, was the excitement that had been building inside me since confirmation of the date. And TODAY was that date.. the privilege of being one of the D.D.A.'s 'Guest Music Spinners' for the evening. YES !!
And what a sincere pleasure it was to be allowed to grace the decks with my musical selections (on this occasion, ALL 45's..) at this brilliant function - that caters for those with a taste for something OTHER than that of ONLY the 'Top 500'.
After managing to 'breeze' the miles of motorways (despite major earlier disruption) I found myself arriving in Lowton shortly after 7pm !! My thanks for the pre-event hospitality - and wonderful cup of tea, courtesy of Mr Cunliffe. Just what was needed after the 190 odd mile journey. Didn't fancy sitting in the car park at The Civic for almost two hours !!
Arrived at the venue in time for kick-off. A few quick hello's to many familiar peeps that also made early arrival.. quick chat to the guy's in the 'record sales' room and it was soon time for me to relieve Karl for the first of my two allocated spots. On with my first selection and, before I had time to count up to ten on my fingers.. Joan was opening her box to decide her first 45 of the evening & it was time for my intermediate last record. My second set preceded Karl this time – and followed on from Paul's unique options of class tune-age. Again, before I knew it I was making ready with the final disc, of my allotted deck-time, to play for the assembled attendees. Oh, how time really DOES fly when you're enjoying yourself !!
A joy and a pleasure to hear Derek play an (total) hour of 45's. I needn't have concerned myself, either, that I'd be adding several new bits to my Wants - some of what he played.. I'd already been trying to find for nearly TWENTY YEARS !!
All the Deejays in the D.D.A. offered their usual 'nothing but GOOD Soul Music' type plays, but I think Derek's airing of Kell Osborne's' Loma 45 'That's What's Happening' was the record of the night for my palette.
Always good to see the regular friendly faces & usual suspects encountered on a (almost) weekly basis across the country's finest Rare Soul promotions. Special Wishes, & CONGRATULATIONS to Joan & Tony on their Anniversary – and may you enjoy a lifetime more !!
Appreciate the opportunity, guy's – and will look forward to my next visit to the D.D.A. at Lowton Civic Hall, in two months time.
Think I've managed to list all my selections – and in their order of play, too !!
Fingers..
