It is directed by Irish filmmaker Shimmy Marcus and stars the best of the new British acting pack Martin Compston (The Disappearance of Alice Creed), Nichola Burley (Streetdance 3D), Felicity Jones (Cemetery Junction) and Alfie Allen (Flashbacks of a Fool). It also features Irish legend Pat Shortt (Garage) and Fun Lovin' Criminal Huey Morgan, as well as a soul-infused soundtrack (Universal Music) with such staples of the era as Tainted Love, The In-Crowd, You Didn't Say a Word, Tom Jones's Face of a Loser and a cover version of Magic Carpet Ride by newcomer Gabriella Cilmi. SoulBoy is produced by Christine Alderson of Ipso Facto Films and Natasha Carlish of Dreamfinder Productions, in association with Screen West Midlands through their Advantage Media Production Fund, Stoke-On-Trent City Council and Molinare. The film is co-Executive Produced by Mark Vennis and Gary Phillips of Moviehouse Entertainment who are also in charge of international sales and by Eve Gabereau and Edward Fletcher of Soda Pictures who will handle the UK and Irish rights. Soda Pictures has acquired the film under its new distribution fund SODA FILM FUND and will release theatrically and across all platforms in the autumn, following a summer of previews at key film festivals, music festivals and an exclusive all-nighter event in the spirit of the film. Eve Gabereau of Soda Pictures says she is thrilled to be releasing SoulBoy because "we have been involved from script level and it is great to see it through to audiences. We are very excited about the possibilities of reaching people for this film via other channels than just cinema screens.” She continues that “although the traditional theatrical space will be a vital component of the film's success, we think that given the avant-garde nature of Northern Soul it makes sense to also position it as alternative content and get it out along the lines of gigs and club nights, and through digital platforms such as iTunes and FilmFlex." Christine Alderson says that "Northern Soul fans are very passionate people who believe in the music and the scene. It's right that this film plays clubs and festivals first so that when the end credits start to roll, audiences can just stand up and dance." She adds that "the film could not have been made without the real fans, the 'soulies', and we are indebted to them for their input and authentication of the scene." Indeed, the film already has the stamp of approval from original Wigan Casino DJ and Northern Soul promoter Russ Winstanley. He believes that “SoulBoy shows Wigan Casino and the Northern Soul Scene in a very accurate and realistic light capturing the unique and undying love we have for ‘our Scene’. It plays with your emotions, gives you wonderful insight and is the most authentic portrayal I’ve ever seen.” He urges you to: “See it to believe it!” The release is timely, as this year marks the 40th anniversary of the term Northern Soul, as it emerged from the record shop Soul City in Covent Garden in 1970. The movement is the percursor to disco and acid jazz, a cousin to funk and even a mentor to breakdancing and streetdancing, so its vibe is still very much alive today in music, dance, fashion and attitude. Dan Lawson, Head of Production and Development at Screen West Midlands says that “the filmmakers have crafted an evocative and compelling tale that makes brilliant use of the Stoke locations and the film will look great on screens big and small.” Marc Wootton, Festival Development Officer at Stoke-on-Trent City Council, adds that “we are very pleased that Stoke-on-Trent has played a major role in the development of this film and that we will host the premiere on home turf. Soul music still plays a big part in people's lives in the city, as evidenced by the amount of locals involved as extras. We're proud to have been involved and show our city's rich heritage and culture." The film will have its World Premiere at the Edinburgh International Film Festival on June 19th and be followed by a Soul Night at the Traverse Theatre. It will also feature in the Latitude, Big Chill, Vintage at Goodwood and Summer Madness Festivals in July and August, and be part of a Northern Soul All-Nighter Weekend hosted by aficionado DJ Russ Winstanley to take place in Stoke-on-Trent on August 21st and be recorded live to be broadcast into club nights across the UK and Ireland. It will be on general release from 3rd September. The soundtrack is out in June. See www.soulboythefilm.com for more details.
