100 Club Saved! ...by Converse?

mojo mag has the below news

A place for live music since 1942, last September's announcement that West End rock'n'roll omphalos the 100 Club was closing was grave indeed. And in December, it seemed the game really was up when a public campaign to buy it fell short of the £500,000 required. Even pleas by Macca, Mick Jagger and Beady Eye fell on deaf ears.

But the Converse shoe company - which, it should be remembered, has made special edition plimsolls featuring The Ramones, AC/DC, The Clash and Nirvana - has stepped up to keep it open, meaning that stretching ahead once more is a full programme of rock, jazz, punk and more (Sick On The Bus and Drongos For Europe play a double-header there on Marc

"Owner Jeff Horton has assured London radio station XFM that the shoe company's corporate presence will be discreet. But MOJO wonders, will the new partnership keep the Working Men's Club dcor - unchanged since 1973 - the Northern Soul nights and the wafting, burgery odours? Not that we've ever eaten anything in there. Ever. Have you? Answers on an electronic postcard, please!"

My grandparents told me they used to eat Chinese food at the 100 Club in the 60s when going to see jazz bands. They're both dead now. I'm not sure if there's a link wink.gif

The Chinese was still there in the 70s, I used to go to Greg Edwards soul/funk nights on a thursday ( I was only 7 wink.gif ) & I'm certain it was open then. Funnily enough I was talking to somebody just recently about the 100 club chinese thumbsup.gif

I was watching "Expresso Bongo" for the first time recently. Disappointed - but for an opening shot that featured a very young Burt Kwouk. There's a tracking shot of shopfronts that includes "Club 100". Is this the 100 Club? Any ideas?

I've just been told this won't affect our nights, so basically YIPPEEEEEEE!

A new dancefloor was definitely being talked about.

You've stumped me on the Cliff film Dave, I've never heard it described as Club 100 though.

I know I'm old but now feel really ancient. I've not only seen the film Expresso Bongo but was taken by my parents to see the musical a few years before the film came out. Can't think whky they took me and my sister, wouldn't have thought it was their cup of tea. Don't remember Club 100 in it but as I was a kid it wouldn't have meant much to me.

Glad to hear our nights are going to be okay, I did have some concerns. Roll on the 5 March, going to celebrate my birthday there, lol!

Typical. It's taken the best part of 25 years to navigate that dancefloor, every bloody loose tile, bump and hole, and now they are talking about changing it ?

Please support this noble cause - Save the 100 Club dancefloor !!

Great to hear the nighter is safe.

Great news indeed. I just hope everyone at the 100club has the foresight to use the brand converse correctly and not sit back.

Limited edition trainers and 100 club converse t-shirts/bags etc...blimey the sales in the states/japan alone would keep the club open for years. Also the adverts on telly could be filmed at the 100club and done in adidas retro style (ex Dee edwards) but keeping it cool with the kids.

Jeff get that merchandice machine moving matey.

Greg

Any idea what form the pleas from mcartney & jagger took ? Was it a "come on people dig deep if you want to keep Club 100 open" ? No one should be expected to contribute just because they're loaded but if you're involved in a campaign which fell short of the dosh required surely if they had felt down the back of one of their sofas they would have found the dosh required ? Not to worry I'll dig out my Converse boots in homage for the next 6ts
