Tom Moulton has announced that Jerry Ross passed away last night. ANOTHER SAD LOSS.
ThinkSmart 231 Posted October 5, 2017 (edited) Very sad to hear. Jerry was a great contributor to classic pop and soul in the 60s. Great that he had a themed compilation but there is so much more to explore. https://www.amazon.co.uk/Some-Kinda-Magic-Songs-Jerry/dp/B01FK2WUUK/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1507241422&sr=8-1&keywords=Jerry+ross Edited October 5, 2017 by ThinkSmart 1 solidsoul reacted to this Share this comment

As a producer- Sapphires- Gotta Have Your Love" and "Slow Fizz", Jay and the Techniques' "Apples, Peaches, Pumpkin Pie", Fathers Angels- "Bok To Bach", Virgil Henry - "You Ain't Saying Nothing New" . As a writer- Dee Dee Warwick (among many others) "I'm Gonna Make You Love Me" and "When Love Slips Away". R.I.P. 1 solidsoul reacted to this Share this comment

Roburt 2,269 Posted October 6, 2017 (edited) Jerry Ross did a huge number of great tracks but not everything worked out so soulful ... in 1969 Jubilee appointed Jerry Ross as the new producer of pop group the Happenings. Back then Ray Dahrouge was a very in-demand song writer. He'd had more success with his songs when cut by soul artists than by pop acts, so he decided to go down that road once again. So Ray wrote a song that he thought would be a perfect cut for Archie Bell & the Drells (titled "Young Girls Want What They Can't Have"). He cut a demo of it in the style of AB&D's and waited to see who would pick it. Jerry Ross came calling and with his track record with the likes of the Festivals, Bobby Hebb, Jerry Butler, Dee Dee Warwick, Showstoppers, Jay & Techniques, etc. Ray was happy when Jerry took the song away with him. BUT, he decided to try it on the Happenings, it didn't fit them well, went unissued and the song just died off. EnricoACM1899 80 Posted October 8, 2017 Great man. I was readin' just yesterday the chapter speakin' about him on the "That's the beat" book about Philly soul. He'd got a lot of skills: writin' tunes, producin', promotin 'em and he also was a great entertainer. He was really a full music man behind the scene. Dayo 223 Posted October 10, 2017 If you ever saw an unknown record with his name credited on the label, you knew it would be worth taking a chance on. Great producer who made some terrific sounds. RIP. Share this comment
