Muscle Shoals - The Movie

Muscle Shoals and in particular The Fame Recording Studios have a long and illustrious history, not just in Soul Music but other genres as well. Fame was founded by Rick Hall who overcame many obstacles in his path to bring musicians, both black and white together.

It would appear a movie is to be premiered later this month at the Sundance Film Festival.

Some of the VERY best music ever created came out of Muscle Shoals ...........

.. & yet the local council guys have no idea what an asset they have on their doorstep.

A few years back the council proposed some stupid plan (may have been erecting a huge billboard that would totally block out any views of the Fame Studio from the adjacent main highway). When the Fame guys objected, they dismissed their views out of hand.

Needless to say, after the local government officials were bombarded with letters / emails of objection from around the world, they woke up to what they had and the proposals were quietly dropped.

Once again, it's the case that the locals don't value the truly great work undertaken at their local studios down the years.

Thank God the likes of Ace have got involved with the Hall family and all the old gems are escaping on CD & vinyl once again.

A big sound from such a small town in Alabama, made even greater by the rhythm sessions of - "The Swampers". And of course The Fame recordings.

Looks good.

Plus other superb releases from Candi Staton, George Jackson, Arthur Conley, Dan Penn, Spencer Wiggins etc. Ace/Kent have done a really good job with the Fame material.

Like Sean, I have been lucky enough to visit Fame And MSS and it was a wonderful pilgrimage for me.

To see first hand these small studios that put out these amazing records was mindblowing!

I can't wait for the movie.

Thanks v much for posting these links a few weeks ago.

I took delivery of The Fame Studios Story + Hall of Fame CD's yesterday (with pt 2 of Hall of Fame on the way soon hopefully!). Only a quick listen through so far but absolutely amazing soul. A real education / insight into the Fame Studios. All the sleeve notes, photos + overall presentation make these an absolute bargain when you think of the time that Tony Rounce, Alec Palao and Dean Rudland must've taken to pull these together with such passion and interest.

There are compilations and then there are COMPILATIONS.

Thanks again, Steve

Really looking forward to seeing this, I love Southern Soul and as a friend of mine in the States once said to me, "Southern Soul is the Truth baby!" I knew exactly what he meant!! The Ace releases are fantastic and the complete Stax Box sets that came out some years back are never far from my player!

I've just seen this post, and would like to say thank you for the kind words.

It was an absolute joy to work on this project.

As to the time it took, it was 15 years from the first Ace member of staff having a meeting until the first release appeared, and four years from when Alec and I had our first meeting with Rick Hall.

It wouldn't have happened without the support of Rick's son Rodney, so all lovers of southern soul owe two generations of the Hall family a big round of applause.
