New Recordings from Yvonne Vernee out for pre-release

New Recordings from Yvonne Vernee out for pre-release cover

New Material Recorded on 7" Vinyl singles by Yvonne Vernee of the Motown vocal group The Elgins, available now for Pre-Order

Unheard Northern Soul Music By The Late Tony "The Entertainer" Clarke Completed For Release

As a songwriter and recording artist for multiple record labels throughout the 60s, singer Tony Clarke scored a Top 40 hit of his own with "The Entertainer" on Chess Records. As a composer he wrote songs for artists including Etta James, David Ruffin, and Aretha Franklin. His work is renowned in England as a part of the Northern Soul scene with his own hit song "Landslide," and compositions for Buddy Smith, The Fabulous Peps, The Vibrations and more. After his musical success, Chess Records gave him control of his own Record Label Imprint, Brute Records. Now, under the direction of his son Geno Clarke, the first releases on Brute Records in 50 years are announced featuring never before heard lyrics written by Tony Clarke before his passing.

Additionally, new Tony Clarke lyrics were merged with Yvonne Vernee's original hit "Just Like You Did Me," resulting in the lively song "You Can Do It." The energy of the original 1960s recording was recaptured with the aid of Drew Schultz & The Broken Habits (Schultz, Carlton Washington, Matt Ryan, Mike Harrison, & Trish Shandor), recorded in Schultz's Detroit studio. This new recording brings a fresh vocal and lyric to a familiar Northern Soul sound. In addition to this renewed take on the classic, a re-recording of "Just Like You Did Me" sees Yvonne Vernee sounding as powerful and energetic as she did 50 years ago.

Special edition original pressings of only 300 copies are currently available for pre-order. This package includes both 45rpm 7" vinyl singles ("My First Love" b/w "You Can Do It" in addition to "Just Like You Did Me" b/w Instrumental), plus reproductions of Tony Clarke's handwritten lyrics for these new songs. The initial 300 copies of the package are signed by Geno Clarke, Yvonne Vernee, and Drew Schultz.

The singles will be officially released on Wed. October 24th, 2018 in conjunction with the Detroit A-Go-Go Festival, but pre-orders can be placed today at https://dsdrums.com/Contact

I confirm it, 150 dollars plus shipping plus customs,

it is at least four times more than what I was expecting to pay

Has to be said there has been a growing trend in the price of certain "NEW RELEASE" soul records with some being more than £20 +

Not particularly un-released things but usually Retro Sounding Soul aimed at the soul buying public (You And Me) where as Pop, Reggae and Basic Soul Releases/Re-issues available from £3:50, so who are the Mugs, I Know we make the choice whether we stick our hands in our pockets and fork out, but we are all guilty of one thing and that is our love of Good Soul music,  but there comes a point when we have to question why some record labels think they can charge what they like where as others continue to give us a good deal on what we pay.

As much as I love soul music, new soul music and vinyl I am now beginning to pick and choose what releases I buy when they are priced over £10/£12.

neither do I get the 300 press only, it costs very little extra (the price of a dozen sales in most cases) to press 500 rather than 300.

Re the 300 , of course, why would you press just 300 and like you say 500 wouldn’t cost much more. I really can only be cynical about the 150 asking price.

consider the $150 this....and the £10 +p&p for The Internationals ( news of which was shared by Chalky this morning). For me at least no contest..the Soul Junction release.

even though i get maybe the "justification" for it , is that the Vernee release is autographed and the lyrics re-repoduced in print, it still is no contest-for me.

I don't have an issue with the 300 number, I'm currently involved with a new label putting out previously unissued Soul tracks and we've pitched it at 300 copies and have paid the owners of the tracks for licensing on 300 copies, basing it on expected demand for what is essentially a niche market. We are keeping the selling price at £10, which gives us quite a tight profit margin when trying to do things the right way, so every penny counts!! I'm hoping that my estimation of 300 sales is completely wrong by the way!!! As a consumer I think $150 is quite a staggering selling price!!

Will be putting up details of our first release tomorrow

Yes, we should know, it was our idea to put a different song over the new backing track

Well I suppose maybe someone’s trying to make a quick buck by selling a copy before the release date. Or more likely ensuring that nobody buys it before then.

But it will be officially released on October 24th and performed live at the Hotel st Regis, Detroit at the launch party.

i have copies now here in U.K., but they won’t be going out until October 24th earliest
