Sad News Simon Lyster R.I.P.

I'm so sorry to have to inform you about my brother's passing on 10th Jan.

 

The following entry will be in the Manchester Evening News on Thursday 22nd ;

 

" Simon Lyster passed away suddenly on Sat 10th January at his home in Marple, Stockport.

Simon aged 56 years, much loved husband of Jean, loving father of Andrew and father in law of Rachel. Dear brother to Peter and Susan and brother in law to Cathy, Kevin, Peter and Ann and friend to so many.

Service and Cremation to be held at the Rowan Chapel, Stockport Crematorium at 1-45pm on Wednesday 28th January and afterwards at the Puss in Boots Pub, Nangreave Road, Offerton, Stockport, SK2 6DG.

Family flowers only please but donations if desired to ' Speakability ', a National Charity dedicated to supporting people with Aphasia, c/o Co-operative Funeral Services, 48-50 Buxton Road, High Lane, Cheshire, SK6 8BH "

 

I can still hardly believe I'm typing these words. We are going to miss Simon so much.

 

The service is going to be a very sad occasion. But the family is determined to make sure that there is plenty of music involved as that was such a passion of Simon's for all of his life.

 

Anyone who knew Simon and would like to come along and pay their respects at the crematorium, and have something to eat after the service, is more than welcome to join us. And hopefully stay on and help us celebrate Simon's life in the appropriate way for someone who loved music but was dedicated particularly to American Soul music of the 1960's to date.

 

Simon started off a life long love affair with Northern Soul particularly at Stamford Hall in Altrincham, then the Blue Rooms in Sale and the Pendulum in Manchester, and then ( particularly ) at the Ritz, and so on and so on...........

 

We will be determined to give him a fitting send off and will be playing some of his favourite tunes.

Pete, don't think I knew your brother but my condolences for your loss

but you were quite an influence on him Pete.

 

Your mag ' that beatin rhythm ' was always going missing as he filched them. And your  ' beat ballad' tapes introduced him to loads of new sounds

Marie and myself would like to pass on our sincere condolences to Jean and family.

Simon was such a lovely guy, and always so on the case that it's hard to believe he has gone, I'm struggling to take in the news 10 days after hearing it. It's just so sad.

Simon loved his music and had amazing good taste. He kindly wrote an introduction to my book  "Northern Soul Stories" which reflected how much the whole scene meant to him, and being Simon it was very articulate. 

One of his most endearng habits was always to be enquiring about things. He would, in typical Manc style, let you know if he thought something you had done was good or bad, but did so without any attitude, he just though it was important to get things spot on.  

I  would know - from what Simon said - if  the music at the "Summer In The Park" All-Dayer was going well or not. He was always right too!  I'm going to miss him quizzing me about my days working in Detroit with the Techno guys, and asking about what was going on behind the scenes at The Manchester Ritz All-Dayers in the 1970's. When he told me he thought I had done a good job at The Ritz and that he had  loved the All-Dayers  it made me feel ten feet tall.

Right, I'm off now to play two of his favourite records, Mel Britt "She'll Come Running Back" and Rhythim Is Rhythim "Strings Of Life" and think of Simon Lyster.

Respect and Love to you mate, you are going to be missed.

Just wanted to write on behalf of Jean and all the family to thank everyone for their kind thoughts and for all the help and support we've had over the last 2 weeks.

Well over 100 people turned up to the crematorium and everyone then came for something to eat and drink. Some of us were still there at 11pm when we had to make a run for it before the weather closed in or we wouldn't have got back to Marple Ridge.

As this is Soul Source, I'll just mention that the evening send off  / wake / celebration of Simon's life probably could not have gone any better. Ginger played a blinding set of Simon's Northern faves and Neil Rushton performed similarly playing a Detroit and Chicago House set, that Simon would have loved. His son Andy and I played a whole mix of Simon's fave dance / indie / soul tunes. 

At the service, the music played was ;

 

Marvin Gaye - Darling, you're wonderful

Tobi Legend - Time will pass you by

Mr Fingers - Can you feel it

Judy Collins - Since you've asked

Barry White - Let the music play

 

Everyone, thanks again. You've been so kind.
