Bobby Bland - (Artist Of The Week)

Latest addition to our Artist of the Week feature - Bobby Bland

Bobby “Blue” Bland Biography

Robert Calvin Bland (né Robert Calvin Brooks; January 27, 1930 – June 23, 2013), known professionally as Bobby "Blue" Bland, was an American blues singer.

Bland developed a sound that mixed gospel with the blues and R&B. He was described as "among the great storytellers of blues and soul music... [who] created tempestuous arias of love, betrayal and resignation, set against roiling, dramatic orchestrations, and left the listener drained but awed." He was sometimes referred to as the "Lion of the Blues" and as the "Sinatra of the Blues". His music was also influenced by Nat King Cole.

Bland was inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame in 1981, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1992, and the Memphis Music Hall of Fame in 2012. He received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 1997. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame described him as "second in stature only to B.B. King as a product of Memphis's Beale Street blues scene".

Predictably a few nice Aussie ones, he had tracks on Top Rank, CBS also, and I’m sure some other Aussie labels...

i have a question, James Browns drummer ‘Jabbo’  worked for Bobby bland before getting offered double what he was on at Duke, anybody know what tracks jabbo played drums on?  All of the below...

Been a bit of a project these past few years collecting Bobby's Duke 45's.  Two short of the US releases - his first and 369 (anyone got one out there?), I'm not sure the second variation of Duke 160 exists(?) and I only have his second release on a 78 - he only put two singles out on the label before his Army service.

Including Demos, Label anomalies, EPs (French, Jukebox, UK), Canadian Dukes (and London), Australian CBS and UK Vogue, Vocalion, Action, Sue,  I'm up to 94.

I'm not so bothered about his ABC, MCA, Malaco 45's.....maybe i'll get around it☺

do you the label variations Mike? Remember having Cry Cry Cry on the earlier brown/ yellow label and I’ve had one on an orange label also... maybe the time the label change was made, and the different ones crept out of different pressing plants?

Mal - I have two label variations of ‘Cry Cry Cry’ with the second titled ‘Cry Cry’. Both are on the earlier brown/yellow. I don’t have an orange variation.

‘Ain’t That Loving You’/ ‘Jelly Jelly Jelly’ is the only one I have on both brown/yellow and orange.

One of the greats. A very important and hugely influential artist.

The Duke material is wonderful but I really enjoyed the ABC years and, in particular, some of his Malaco outings.

Interesting they do turn up, so I’d have to check release numbers against dates, but there seem to be a fair few that got both label designs.   I foolishly sold my orange label Cry cry cry, which I really wish I hadn’t...

more Aussie Bobby bland:-)

One of the greatest artists of the last sixty years. Here's a rare duet with the little known Vi Campbell complete with a wonderful Joe Scott arrangement. Utterly beautiful and one of the greatest soul records of all time IMO. Have regular selected this cut when on the radio.
