Top Tips For 2011

Hi all,

Well, its that time of year again thumbsup.gif

Exactly 12 months since we did the last 'Top Tips' thread... so, as it's now a Soul Source tradition, here we go again!

Here's your opportunity to tip the tunes in your box for future greatness, during the forthcoming year... or simply list any number of records that you'd like to recommend to other Soul Sourcers.

You might be a DJ with that tasty unplayed, unknown, hardly played or semi-known 45 stuck in the back of your box that you'd love to play out... but haven't quite got around to it... yet!

You might be a collector, sitting on a tune that you know, if it got into the right hands, could become massive in the next 12 months.

It could be an LP track that, for whatever reason, has never been given the recognition it deserves.

It might be a tasty 'B' side that, given the right exposure, might just have what it takes to become a monster!

We're talking, Northern, Modern, Crossover or 'Just Soul' biggrin.gif Whatever floats your boat!

No need to post sound clips. Just let us know what you've got that you think deserves a really big plug in the coming year!

So come on. Look at your box and let's have your top tip (or tips) for 2011.

Oh... and a Happy (and Soulful) New Year to all!

I was just thinking earlier today about this.

A couple I bought in the send half of the year, not so well-known Cheap to buy, but top quality:

Freddie Watson And The Restorations - Unlucky Seven (Eloys)

The Debonairs - Feel Alright (W-BS)

More later.

One I've been waiting for and received today......

Tyrone Davis - All The Waiting Is Not In Vain

Superb tune and such an under rated artist probably due to the fact that most of his 45's are so readily available.

Makes this man's contribution to the soul genre no less worthy though IMO.

RIP Tyrone.

Here's a few from me, more from an RnB/early soul Perspective;

Valiants Walkin' girl Ensign....( right from the off this latinesque shouter hits the spot).

Charlie Baker You crack me up Liberty(green issue) a group soul mid tempo atmospheric dancer. LOOK OUT.

Albert King I Get evil Bobbin A label with a few winners on it..this being one of them....slick RnB.

Percy Mayfield Diggin' the Moonglow Speciality (Ahead of it's time this one, i think from 57...but such an infectious tune...i can't stop slapping it on the turntable.).

Danny Overbea My Love Checker (this one from 55 i think..sounds more like 60-63...People would probably class it as popcorn, and it does have a feel to it...yet this tune is simply phwoar!)

Tony Spade What's Gwyne on? Back Beat (white green purple design). An early outiing for Berry Gordy as a songster, and a crackin attempt too. Uptempo mod dancer.

Betty Renne Bye Bye Baby New Art... hhhhooooooooo-wwweeeeee. A bit of a cracker this one..."wait wait wait, where you goin wit them suitcases and thing, get back here"(or words to that affect)....then she puts her foot down and puts him staight with her vocal. Rockin' rnb/early big city styley.

Then on more of a Northern tinge

Agree with a prior post;

Billy Harner I've got to check you out V-tone Brilliant uptempo northern dancer...with a superb backing with breaks in all the right places. Not forgetting Billys' rawcous vocal over the top....keep your ears pealed.

Capt.Jesse Fountain I'm Marchin' Cameo Parkway....The title gives you the style of dancer you're gonna get..and is delivered in full.

The postee reserves the right to an opinion and is in no way claiming exclusivity of knowledge to any of the above titles. Also realises that he doesn't get out often enough to know if any of these tunes actually get played anywhere already. Yet, to the best of his/her? knowledge feels that with a little exposure....or More exposure, these tunes could add 57% more enjoyment tpo an evening of entertainment in 2011. So ner! (I'm really not well in the head).

happy new year all!!

4 nice choices mate......and all bought from the same super-seller (don't be shy you can share the name of this super-seller with all of us mate  ), combined price about £70 for all four? These are the epitome of quality cheapies, though I'd guess one or two won't be at cheapie prices for very long.

2011 will see the total self-destruction of the entire scene so don't think I'll put my tips up, doesn't seem worth it .....(translated version of that sentence <------- Can't narrow it down to 3 or 4 yet and might take a while before I do so spout any old rubbish and hope no one really questions why I haven't put a few tips up myself!)

Yes mate, all nice and cheap, all quality, and off the best dealer on the scene... can't for the life of me remember who though.

Mind you, it takes a buyer with a good ear and superb taste to pick em to play out.

The Inspirations Tell Daddy PKC .........Fantastic obscure blue-eyed horn-laden cover of Clarence Carter's 'Tell Daddy' !!!!! I played it out twice to some great reaction from the punters!!

The Jade Siesta Is Over RDL ...........As mentioned before great latin mover and one of my current favourites!!!!

Albert Esberido Roar Of The Crowd Tina....Faster then the Grand Prixs version and blimey it always makes me wanna dance !!!

............

Roy Roberts You Move Me HOF

Jimmy Raye That'll Get It Moonshot

These two have been choosen last year or the year before I think but everytime I played them out, the dance floor was rocking and I believe they will get even bigger this year!!!

Very good answer mate, made me chuckle anyway :thumbsup:. A few that I reckon will make an impression in 2011,

Little Bob - We're In Love c/w Look Out Mr Heartaches - La Louisianne

Been playing this out for a few months now and it gets a great reaction and always has people asking about it.

[rx]70841[/rx]

Billy Gee - The Name Of The Bag - Joye

Might have tipped this one before, it's one I really rate but I think 2011 will be the year it really takes off as a few quality DJs have managed to get hold of a copy and all this needs to become a massive spin is a bit more exposure.

[rx]33141[/rx]

Dr Soul - Left Eye Jump - Monc'a

Opening track on a comp CD I gave out earlier this year and so many people asked about it or told me they had bought a copy etc that it obviously has something.

[rx]73009[/rx]

Plus lots and lots of others! Might add a few more later if I get the chance...

Hi all,

Well, its that time of year again

Exactly 12 months since we did the last 'Top Tips' thread... so, as it's now a Soul Source tradition, here we go again!

Hi Sean. Happy new year to you and yours.

Picking up from an alternative thread on what "made it" from last years list, I'm going to go with a record that could make it bigger but I wouldn't count it as one of my favourites (I'm sure none I put forward last year picked up any plays - I'm the soul equivalent of the kiss of death). I did play this out at The Attic a couple of times and heard it played out to a larger floor by Karl H at Rugby - Lou Rawls version of A Man of Value on MGM. Given Lou's popularity a few years ago in clubs with See You When I Get There, and the historic overplayed status of Tyrone Barkley this could be the next thing to be tired of.

This thread does deserve more thought, I've not been home much recently to browse through boxes but here's two that spring to mind that I would like to hear out more. Both known but not heard enough in my opinion.

Jerry Ganey - You Don't Love Me, huge bellowing sound that would be great in a large hall with a full floor.

Roy Hamilton - The Panic is On, representing my current leaning towards the beat ballads. Obviously played but I'd like to elevate its status.

Just realised all 3 are from MGM, probably still stuck in Roger's previous label of the week thread in my head as I got a few out to play when looking at that.

From other's boxes: I heard Phil Shields play Louis Paul - The Change Will Do You Good (Intro) in the freestyle room at Rugby, I'd like to hear that more. Also I think it was Killa at Bradford played Wess Oliver - Keep The Faith (Star Fire), again I know it's been played a little - just saying I'd like to hear it more this year.

A bit rambling of me, just felt like contributing.
