Well well well.... has everybody recovered from Christmas and NYE yet?

....I tell you what, it's just not the same in Winter. I'll never get used to it!!!

Anyway, hopefully you'll all be seeking some warm sunshine from the depths of one of Yorkshire's finest venues, via the warming sounds brought to you by our soulful guest DJ's sharing their vinyl and aiming to thrill you more than anything Santa brought or the cellars of finest vino made you feel over the season.

The mix is pretty special we think ;-)

First up, it's KITCH - who can almost make your feet bleed through the dancing sweats pounding to his high powered allniter sounds, but then also has a cherished dark side (usually when Julia is not watching) with some seriously tantalising quirky or midtempo soul gems that could blow your mind if you stand too close.

Next up is MALAYKA - who has received some of the best feedback from anyone who has played at Boomerang before. A style and Euro-bred soul openness that always seeks the buzz and especially captures those who want something fresh. Whilst she favours the 70's sounds, I have also seen her heave a big 60s room into a frenzy and she is our Lindt (via Bamberg) sensation.

And finally, we have decided to appoint ARTHUR as our "regular guest" Boomerang DJ for yet another year, so Santa not only answered his prayers, but your support means that we can (maybe) afford him again. He's played at numerous venues in the UK and Europe over the last 3 decades, plus an old boy from the Canal Tavern well before Boomerang - but it's his 60s and 70's soul sounds that do all the talking and roar loudly on his behalf. That man can fill and clear a floor like no other - and even usually chooses when this happens.

Finally - as co-promoter with Karen, I also play some of my own records each Boomerang night and at a time when I think it's appropriate. You have been warned.

Please visit the website for details on accommodation near the venue or past playlists to get a better idea of what this is all about.- and we hope to see you there.

Nighty night,

m

As usual Rbman and I will be coming up from down sarf. Looking forward to a good evening at my favourite club. Good music and good company on the menu, plus the banter and fun in the Canal Tavern restaurant beforehand. Already thinking about the 2 steaks and bottle of wine for £15, cheaper than Wetherspoons.

Hi Karen & Maria

Really pleased to hear your "Tuck Box" is improving was it the cream or the tablets which made all the difference Karen?

Looking forward to the 21st with a might fine DJ line up. Althougth I'm a little unsure about this "Kitch" bloke any chance he could put up a 3 hour podcast during the early part of next week so we can see what he's all about?

Two more for the mini bus please Karen, my P.A has remembered to book us in this time using my credit card (yet again!)

I will be coming up on my own on Saturday as Martin has has a heart attack and is currently in hospital. He'll be out tomorrow hopefully but was advised that he must avoid excitement, and in particular Crossover and cakes (that's a London joke). He seemed more upset that he wouldn't be driving up to Thorne than about his heart attack, I told him his health was the important thing. He is truly a top man!!!

It'll be a bit strange to be up there without my mate, we always have such a laugh on the journey up there. So for me it's the train from King's Cross. Today I visited him in hospital and he asked if I was going to have the 2 steaks and a bottle of wine to myself in the Canal Tavern, I said that sounded like a good idea, lol.

He has requested that Arthur plays the Honey Bees for him, even though he's not there.

See you all there.

Was hoping to make an appearance proving I am not stuck to my keyboards these days, but some parent sitting to do on Sunday so not feasible. Have a great night all, and great to see La Kitchener behind decks, certainly a treat for your ears.

And hopefully it will stop him swigging gallons of tequila and diving across tables, although that may be his finishing piece it is currently rumoured.

The Thorne Mosh Pit, cant wait to see the pictures,

Hi Geoff , I am really sorry to hear of Martins situation , please wish him a speedy recovery , had you been driving I would have happily been your soul buddy for the night as I know my little chum over those wild hills would have liked it too , as its her birthday this week ! Pity we can't get Martin T to come along and we could have had another reunion :)

You will have to enjoy it for two and you must dance to H&B ...superb taste /choice x

Both had a big shock when we heard about Martin, but likewise been harrasing him to take care and behave from now on (...and whilst, I don't own a nurses uniform, I have a soul buddy who does ;-)).

Looks like the sales table space is now likely full with our regulars (including DaveR, DaveW, AndyD, Chalky, Soul Sam...) so please remember to bring your post-Christmas spending vouchers, or at least be kind enough to fondle through and smile after lifting each record.

The DJ roster has done the rounds and Kitch is now planning his spots around his tequila intake and floorshow times. ~

Here's the final verdict on musical responsibilities :

8.00-8.45 Maria O (45min)

8.45 -9.15 Arthur Fenn (30min)

9.15-9.45 Malayka Erpen (30min)

9.45-10.15 Kitch (30min)

10.15 -10.45 Maria O (30min)

10.45 -11.30 Malayka Erpen (45min)

11.30-12.15 Kitch (45min)

12.15 -13.00 Arthur Fenn (45min)

13:00 CLOSE

--------------------

UPCOMING DATES are 21 APRIL - 11 AUGUST - 17 NOVEMBER

(with more great record collections booked for your pleasure - woo hoo!)

Maria, keep that bottle on ice until next time. Arthur, just because I'll not be there is not an excuse to leave the Honey Bees at home. Karen, cyber hug and sniff.

Do I really need an eye kept on me Martin? I'm a bit worried now, is my behaviour that bad or bizarre, lol? Possibly the latter.

It's not going to be the same without you, I'm going to miss our banter. Be sensible and take care of yourself, and follow medical orders please!

I have remembered to get the talc ready to put in my bag.

Karen, can I have Martin's cake as well please?

See....even when I post without drinking red wine I can manage to cock it up !!!

Geoff, you might be travelling up on your own but you will never be on your own at Thorne :-))

Really looking forward to Thorne, particularly as we missed the last one. We are hoping to try the whole experience this time and sample the delights on offer in the resturant, all washed down with a pint or two or three of Black Sheep.

See you there

Vicki and Kev (and maybe Robert will be with us)

Forgot to say - the Canal Tavern has cocktails on sale tonight and extra Black Sheep in, plus ordered in various usual favourite highly flammable drinks that the boomerang crowd likes to enjoy. Some smaller tables have been bought in too.

They do try and look after us, so please look after the venue plus send a smile their way. Talc is allowed, but only if safe - so be warned that one of the mistress co-promoters may give you a spank and confiscate the bottle until after class. We aim to please!

I've just got in from my trip to Thorne for Boomerang. Pretty tired actually.

As most of you know I normally go up to Thorne with Martin Ainscough (Rbman) but last Monday he had a heart attack at work. When his son informed me about it he said his father was concerned that he wouldn't be able to drive up to Thorne on Saturday, I told him not to worry about that, his health was more important.

I decided I'd go up by train so booked tickets on the Internet, the cheapest way to get a discount. I left home at about 12.45 to get a train to King's Cross, there to get a train to Doncaster. Quite a pleasant journey up there, but when I got out at Doncaster it was like being deposited in the Arctic, it was so cold and windy, down in London it had been comparatively mild for January. After about 15 minutes the train I was getting to Thorne arrived and off I went. I got off at Thorne South, and walked to the guest house where we always stay. I'd done myself a map as I am the most useless navigator in the world.

After having a wash and change of clothes I strolled round the Canal Tavern, bought myself a pint of Doombar, very nice, and went into the function room where the equipment was being set up. I chatted with Arthur and Maria, and the former played me a recent purchase, lovely slow ballad in the style I particularly like.

We went into the dining area for some food, then I discovered I didn't have my wallet, I'd paid for the earlier drink with pocket change. I panicked then, but Arthur kindly drove me back to the guest house, I found my wallet in a drawer with my house keys, etc. A great relief.

After my meal in very good company I went into the function room, paid my £5, was the first in, dumped my coat and bag, and sat down and had a chat with Karen. Maria was first DJ. playing tunes like Belita Woods' Magic Garden, Shadow Of A Memory by Minnie Jones, Put A Smile On Time by Rhythm Machine, and quite a few that I didn't know.

Arthur took over for 30 minutes, again playing mostly tunes I didn't know, or had passed me by. I find that the day after I've been to a soul night my memory is usually blank as to the majority of records played, must be my age, will need to get my notebook out again.

Malayka was on next, again I didn't know a single record she played, but I thought they were good tunes.

Then it was Kitch, again plenty I didn't know, I particularly like the last one in this set, he said it was an old Stafford tune, does anyone there know what it was please?

Maria was up next, got me out there for Betty Wilson, followed by Clydie King's Soft And Gentle Ways, I knew I'd heard that before but had to ask Maria what it was. Great beat ballad. By this time people were beginning to dance after a bit of a slow start. She also played Third Eye by the Cosmos Universal Band.

Malayka took over, more nice tunes.

When she finished her set Kitch was on again. During his set he played a couple of pretty fast Norhern records, think one was by a girl or girl group, does anyone remember them and who they were by? He ended his set with Sandy Golden's superb Your Love Is Everything.

Arthur finished the evening off with a set that started with the Honey Bees' Let's Get Together Again, requested and played for Martin in his absence, and included I'll Let You Slide, Love Slave, My Love Is Strong, There's A Girl For Me Somewhere, and other favourites. He kept the floor busy to the end.

After that a stroll back to the guest house and off to bed. I'd had a really good night, so many people asking about Martin and wishing him a speedy return to good health. He was genuinely missed, seemed strange without him there, like me he'd be walking around and chatting to everyone, missed him on the journey there and back as we always have a good laugh and put the world to rights. I hope I didn't bore all the people I talked to.

The only downside of the trip was that going home the train from Thorne North to Doncaster was 15 minutes late and I missed my connection, and froze while waiting in the wind, despite being in the waiting shelter. However got a train slightly later than the one I was supposed to get, very surprised how busy it was.

So another trip to Boomerang is over, looking forward to the next one. It's my favourite soul club, always delivers a good mix of music. And it's great to have so many friends up there. I will be at the next one, and I'm certain that Martin will be back to form, but will have to keep an eye on him, no backsliding to the bar, etc. Thanks to the DJs for good music, and to Karen and Maria for running it, plus of course the staff at the Canal Tavern.

a big thank you to karen & maria - these two ladies do a fabulous job - time and time again.

i enjoyed the evening a lot - for me, record of the night was kitch's precisions acetate (can i ask if you could leave it to me in your will, kitch?)

both, maria as well as arthur played great records - but there again, they always do...!!!!

the redesigned canal tavern look a lot friendlier then they used to - so i thought it adds to the (already) positive athmosphere.

thanks for letting me play my stuff....

Hi Malayka,

The Precisions track came from the LP acetate i got from A. Pierce quite a time ago which he may have loaned it out for the release on one of the JoeBoy CD's.

I had some of the tracks re-cut to save the original and yes I'm sure I can find a place in my will for you..

Geoff,

I think the track from memory could be - Stan Deveraux "No sad Tomorrows" (Su-Jay). Had'nt heard it out for a long time so thought it deserved a spin..
