That's what I like to see Len...All organised and focussed a good month before an event!

Thanks again for taking responsibility for DJ times at Snooks. Looks good. So important to make a night flow. If momentum built over the last 12 months keeps up for this 4th night, then everyone's in for a top night.

Added pressure of the closing spot is certainly focussing my mind  (gulp!) and will be calling the now compulsory pre-event team meeting the week before, to make sure the sound and room are all spot on.

Troop;

Not long to go now, Mr Scotney has sent out his mission statement informing us jocks what he expects from us, nothing taken for granted, diet, exercise, deportment and smartness, he's got a final training session organised for Thursday which includes a team briefing, dummy run in respect of the turntables and a last supper.

Hopefully my playbox will pass Mr Scotney's inspection and then its game on. Should be another cracker at this super club.

See you all.

"Only three times a year remember, so got to get it right each time"...and no I didn't steal that line from my missus :D

To all those who've already been along upstairs at Snooks, your support and interest is making this something to really look forward to every four months or so. Thank you. For anyone who's not tried it, by all means see the lookback for the night in Feb....or better still just come along to this Saturday and give it a go.

Cheers, Steve

Rumour has it that Steve will be issuing I-pads to all the DJs so he can be in constant contact, failing that, it will be the walkie talkies he picked up from army surplus.

Winnie; your not wrong there mate, he's got us wearing army surplus attire, its a god job this aint being held in the desert, I'd disappear before your eyes, Len is well pissed off because his top doesnt include all the colours of the rainbow!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The Paul Weller looky likey Jem looks quite dapper actually, I'll wager he cant do a backdrop in those boots though!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I dread to think what the grand wizzard will be wearing, the last I saw of him he was going through a box of old medals muttering something about 'I'll show those peasants who's in charge'.

Len, I'll be camping outside in my army surplus bivvy Wednesday night if you want to join me, cant be late now can we.

:glare: Bit too much time on our hands have we gents?! Very funny :D.

Winnie...your chair and sectioned off dance area will be set up this Thursday night.

Brian...I was going to give you a lift this Thurs night but you can make your own way there now for the 7.43pm meeting.

I'll have you know I had to throw my best army surplus gear out last week as my missus ruined it on a hot wash after I got grass stains on knees and elbows playing outside with my mates. I therefore declare jeans, loud shirts and ancient shoes are order of the day, so you'll all be fine in what you normally wear.

Anyway, back to reality...After all the pop, pomp and pageantry of this Jubilee weekend, I suspect I'm not alone in looking forward to some great soul and stretching my legs a bit on that lovely sprung floor upstairs at Snooks.

Great to read that Andy and Tank can make it for the first time and I also know of a few others who will be making their debut alongside the growing number who already know what they're in for.

Cheers, Steve.

This has been levelled at me before :) noticed a mention of garb for the evening, would ''full metal jacket'' not be the most appropriate..........? :)

Len :elvis:

:D :D Yeah, yeah..very funny (again!). Chalk board... As if, in this day and age...Just you wait 'till I finally get an i-pad.

Steaks were great, banter was great, room looked great...and sound was great once the venue owner showed me I'd plugged the deck into the wrong socket of his bling new mixing desk :glare::D. I'll make sure the "robot" sound effect is working for you on the night Len, don't worry!

The fact that we each "discovered" some superb new records from the couple of dozen we had between us on the warm up night bodes well for what I think will be an interesting night of some great floor-packing classics to a few amazing lesser known dancers too.

"It's all looking very, very good"...as a certain internet radio station owner might say!

Cheers, Steve

As ever this night is building slowly, agreed the steaks were excellent, the banter as ever was very funny at times, Steve/Jem sort these words out in the order required when plugging a deck into a mixer............Aux, Phono,CD, if you had listened to me and Lenny you would have saved yourself so much stress.....:)

The answer of course can be found by using the alphabet and matching the little holes up at the back of the mixer!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Record Deck = Phono, CD player =CD we will save the Aux for a later training session as its a bit complicated, me and Len will put something together for you.

Musically, I always look forward to this night, see ya there folks.

Hi Folks,

Firstly " THANK YOU STEVE SCOTNEY for carrying most of the Ëœburdenâ"žÂ¢ of running this event, it can be a thankless task sometimes but it is very much appreciated by all.

We had a few moans from some folk last night that there wasnâ"žÂ¢t enough oldies for them which is fine as long as it is done in a constructive and polite way " On the other hand we also had folk saying what a fantastic night musically it was, so there you go.

We do all need to respect each otherâ"žÂ¢s varied tastes though; no one can go to an ËœAcross The Boardâ"žÂ¢ night and expect all the music to be to their particular taste

I asked one of our regulars what he thought of the night, I kinda knew what he was going to say and could tell he didnâ"žÂ¢t want to be rude so I said “I know mate, not enough oldies for you aye? He replied “Yes, for me but itâ"žÂ¢s not all about me is it? - What a Gent, thanks for that positive attitude.

ËœThe Gameâ"žÂ¢ has definitely changed though and we need your feedback to help us decide which direction to take ËœSnooksâ"žÂ¢ in. One idea was to have a 2nd room making the main room oldies only. That works great at Rushden but I personally donâ"žÂ¢t really want that at every event.

I believe the ËœSnooksâ"žÂ¢ crowd are actually evenly split though, people like myself also enjoy all the Classic Oldies and I canâ"žÂ¢t understand why it canâ"žÂ¢t work both ways " A good soul record is a good soul record isnâ"žÂ¢t it? In this instance we are going to post our play lists on this thread so you can see the diversity of what was played - I think diversity is healthy.

Negatives are so much louder than positives arenâ"žÂ¢t they? A bit of Ëœgive and takeâ"žÂ¢ is needed thatâ"žÂ¢s all " “You say Tomangoes, I say Tomatoes, Tomangoes, Tomatoes, Tomangoes, Tomatoes, letâ"žÂ¢s call the whole thing off :D

See you next time.

Len.

Eloquently put Len!

I personally enjoyed it and found the mix of styles pretty good. I like to hear 'oldies' too - but not the same ones all the time. I like to hear things I haven't heard before or not very often and I think all of you covered that criteria.

Had a conversation with Steve to that effect (I think?) - 'though it was late and I was a bit tired and emotional (suitably imbibed!!).

I think there's a good vibe about our local scene at the moment thanks to you guys.

Well done to you all!

Thanks to all who came along last night for the 4th round at Snooks. Another chapter in the book and plenty of analysis both before, during and after the event...as always seems to be the case with soul nights hey!

Always going to be hard to please everyone when trying to blend some lesser known records with great classics when some people want just one thing or the other whilst some enjoy the diversity.

I'm listening and learning all the time. Snooks is an awesome venue and once the owner extends the floor downstairs (which is a bigger and slightly cooler room..temp wise) I will consider the many requests I've had to make it a two room event. I've seen how it can work and how it can allow people to really enjoy their preferred type of soul. I'll let everyone know in good time for the only remaining booked date for this year, which is 13th October.

First time I've opened and closed a night here and as a good few people were up to the decks and asking what I was playing / asking me to post a play list on here, here you are in approx order:

Opening 7.45 to 8.45:

Sunday - Where did he come from (Alteen)

The Lovettes - I'm afraid (Carnival)

Lovations - (I keep singing) La La La Ooh (Part III)

Jean Wells - What have I got to lose (Calla)

Enchanted Five - Darling, I need you now (CVS)

Margie Joseph - One more chance (Volt)

Emotions - Stealing love (Volt)

Willie Bollinger - I won't have to cry no more (Kent Select)

The Prophets - I don't love you no more baby (Jubilee)

Gloria Shannon - Tears (RealSide)

Tommie Young - Hit and run lover (Soul Power)

Spencer Wiggins - I'm at the breaking point (Kent Select)

The Four Voices - We live in the ghetto (Voice)

The Innersection - I'm in debt to you (Group 5)

Albert Jones - Fifteen cent love (Kapp)

The Precisions - If this is love (Drew)

Eddie Bishop - Call me (ABC Paramount)

The Esquires - How could it be (Bunky)

Just wanted to post some comments about last night, particularly as youâ"žÂ¢ve invited feedback, Len.

Firstly, thanks to all you guys who organised everything; itâ"žÂ¢s easy as a punter to forget how much hard work goes in. My first time at Snooks and overall impressions were excellent venue, good and friendly crowd and will probably visit again.

On the downside I was one of the people who felt that the music lost its way a bit in the middle. In that respect my favourite set was Jemâ"žÂ¢s which was packed with classic oldies.

The debate between classic oldies versus modern soul/crossover seems to reign about a number of dos. For me, I accept that many events need to cater for the whole northern soul tribe, but I suspect that along with me people are more likely to accept this when the event does what it says on the tin. Having not been to Snooks before the clues for me were to be found on the flyer which said “Northern Soul Night and “featuring classic oldies etcÂ. Iâ"žÂ¢m not sure that every track I heard was Northern Soul and that classic oldies were the majority of tracks played, as (in my view) implied by the flyer.

Furthermore, Iâ"žÂ¢ve never been a DJ and take my hat off to any of you guys who invest big amounts of time and money perfecting your trade but in my simple view of life the skill of the DJ is being attuned to whatâ"žÂ¢s happening 10 feet in front of the DJ booth. During that middle spell last night the dancefloor looked a bit barren; Jemâ"žÂ¢s set demonstrated that there were plenty of feet that wanted to dance to the right tunes. Just a thought.

On a separate note, could somebody post a link to any pics that were taken last night, if Iâ"žÂ¢m not persona non grata now because of my feedback? ;-)

Thanks again and keep the faith!

Agree with Tank on this ...think we do have a very healthy local scene at the mo with plenty of people from back in the day still involved and some new blood coming in (Steve Scotney)...Well done Steve...some diverse stuff on the night...which is what it says on the tin ! "classics to crossover"

Snooks is a great venue and i know there is some interesting Soul related stuff up and coming at the venue in the not so distant future....watch this space!

Highlight of the night for me ? didnt hear one RnB record!

As for the balance of oldies versus other played, have included my play list over two spots, the way i would look at it is ...not many punters ready to hit the floor to anything much before 9pm, so that leaves 9pm to 1am (4hrs) inc. my spots.. all oldies! and the others a mix of both, would account for over two and a half hours of solid oldies....pretty much what is advertised.

Not in play order

Eddie Holman - I surrender - ABC

Dee Dee Sharp - What kind of lady - Action (uk)

Darryl Banks - Angel baby - Atco

Hank Jacobs - Elijah rockin etc. - Call me

Hmmm. Top marks for your diplomacy, Jem, but dancefloor doesn't lie. And you're conveniently omitting the word "classic".

On the plus side, reading through your playlist reminds me of what cracking sets you played - my opinion, of course!!!!

Hi Mate,

Thanks for Ëœcoming forwardâ"žÂ¢ and respectively giving your views - Point taken ref the flyers, no need for us to Ëœamend the tinâ"žÂ¢ now though - See below.

Iâ"žÂ¢ll try and explain what Ëœwent wrongâ"žÂ¢ last night (Itâ"žÂ¢s only a little Ëœbody blowâ"žÂ¢ and we will address the issues)

When we started ËœSnooksâ"žÂ¢ we really didnâ"žÂ¢t know in what direction the music policy was going to go because of the location of Raunds. At the last one Steve and I had Sean Chapman, Brian Goucher and Steve Brown as guests. I have ËœD.J Timeâ"žÂ¢ duties because of my experience of The Embankment Club and do put a lot of thought into (as I call it) the ËœLayers of the nightâ"žÂ¢

Iâ"žÂ¢m a fan of Brian Goucher although I was well aware that I had to be careful what time I put a Ëœcutting edgeâ"žÂ¢ D.J on locally so I put Brian on early, 8.30 " 9.30. Brian decided to do an L.P Track only spot so this was for sure going to be something different and interesting and definitely fitting for that time of night.

We had over 150 people in and we were all pleasantly surprised that Brianâ"žÂ¢s set went down really well, people were dancing to that Ëœkind of stuffâ"žÂ¢ and at that time of night " Brilliant!

Ref Sat night I have to admit that I may have got a bit carried away with ref how well the ËœCutting Edgeâ"žÂ¢ stuff went down last time so had a line-up of myself, Steve, Brian, Woody and Lou. After I posted the D.J times up, it dawned on me that this particular line up just wouldnâ"žÂ¢t work at ËœSnooksâ"žÂ¢ so Ëœdraftedâ"žÂ¢ in Jem to balance it out and thank the lord I did! (Woody and Lou couldnâ"žÂ¢t make it in the end anyway but will hopefully be on at some point in the future)

Now for the usual list of reasons - time of year, too many events, the recession etc. we unfortunately only had just over 100 in this time and the Ëœmissingâ"žÂ¢ 50 were the Ëœout of townersâ"žÂ¢ that would have been dancing to the Ëœnewiesâ"žÂ¢ and in my opinion if they were there it would have made the night Ëœflowâ"žÂ¢ a lot better. So really, it was just Ëœone of those thingsâ"žÂ¢. Iâ"žÂ¢ve been involved in promoting for a very long time and am always learning lessons and Ëœtweaking my methodsâ"žÂ¢ (Oer Mrs! J)

So ËœMoving Forwardâ"žÂ¢ as they say in the ËœCorporate Worldâ"žÂ¢ our plan now is to either make this a 2 room event (segregating everyone) Or, which I favour " I will adjust the Ëœratioâ"žÂ¢ more towards the oldies for next time and just keep an eye on things at each event and make adjustments if necessary as ËœSnooksâ"žÂ¢ develops its own identity.

I hope that all makes sense and that anyone who was a little disappointed in the lack of familiar tunes will stick with us and return for the next one as I promise it will be a lot more Ëœoldiesâ"žÂ¢ oriented. Youâ"žÂ¢ll have to put up with my little effort in the middle though! J

I think we all agree that diversity and contrast is healthy as long as it is Ëœserved upâ"žÂ¢ in the right size portions.

All the best,

Len.

Thanks for your frank response, Len. That helps my understanding big time. On balance was plenty there on the night to excite me enough to come back again - just thought you should hear constructive comments from "the floor"!!! All the best, sb62

I think the wording is really 'familiar sounds' rather than 'oldies' as some 'oldies' are still brand new to some folk. Also nowadays there is an extra consideration to make - Some of the folk that attend, although being a 'northern soul age' never actually 'did it' in the early days so loads of the tunes are new to them. This is by no means a dig at these people; their attendance is very much appreciated. I'm just making the point that I am also aware of this factor.

All the best,

Len.

P.s - In the words of Lord Sugar - "Brian, your fired!"

(Only joking mate, you'll be 'Tweaked' with the rest of us)

I really appreciate constructive comments rather than rude or just plain aggressive ones or even Ëœboycotting' events over one bad experience (I've had plenty of that in the past and it hurts) - Everyone wins and everyone stays friends! (Makes sense don't it?!)

Len.

P.s - Jem wasn't that good " Damn him! :glare:

Steve and crew KEEP ON KEEPING ON.

Whenever any of us started on our soul journey, it began with hearing sounds we had never heard before which grabbed us by the balls and gave you goose pimples, and that is how it still is for me. This is how I continue on my journey. Everyone has different taste, which is great, but I can't for the life of me understand why people now seem to dislike what they don't know, regardless. If you're sat in front of the tv tonite, how many people say "don't like all these new programmes, I want more repeats! I say stick with one room, mix it up, open your mind and ears, make friends, dance, listen, have a good time. My other love is hill walking and for my journey here I use a map, everything nicely contained and divided by those grid lines. I look at the ma,p plan my walk start and finish, but it's what happens between all those grid lines off road that makes the walk, what you see, hear etc and I wouldn't want to walk in the same area all the time no matter how good. Soul music is to be enjoyed in all it's forms, don't miss out.

Sorry I didnt post on the thread before the event but I was in A &E at the local hospital, that new Dyson ball vacume cleaner isnt what I thought it was . Best Kimbo

Thanks for all the comments everyone + to Len, Jem & Brian for posting their play lists and for their considerable help and support with this event.

It's good to have healthy debate and constructive feedback about these nights and I'm taking things on board, both in terms of what's posted up here and the conversations I had on the night, most of which were positive.

A year since this night started and I could probably write a book on it already!

I look forward to the next round in October and seeing lots of you out and about locally and beyond in the meantime.

All the best, Steve

Very much agree with this Len and it's a very good point, relevant country wide and the reason why the 'oldies' scene has overtaken the 'newies' scene IMO. Personally I'd prefer to see Snooks keep going in the direction it is, forward, but know you and Steve will do what's right.

I read what ''Soulboy 62'' said (sorry don't know your name) and agree that there was a lull on the dancefloor for a little while, but some of us kept on dancing :)

Like Jem I was also pleased to hear a lack of R&B (the sound of erectile dysfunction, I call it) :shhh: on the decks, modern/crossover, does and always has felt like the natural progression to me and long may it continue.
