where do i start? Grantham born and bred.. I got into the

'Northern' soul scene as a scruffy haired 14 yr old in the hot summer

of 1976. My older sisters were dating guys that went to various clubs

of the day (and earlier) and i'd spend hours listening to Motown/Chart

soul and the rarer stuff. I visited my first club in late 77, which

was the very last St Ives All niter as a 15 yr old school kid, in

Harry's mini bus. My next venture was feb 78 to Nottingham palais,

i've never looked back!

During late 79' the mod revival really took hold on the soul

scene. to my eyes, this was another spectrum to the wide world of

SOUL, i welcomed it because of the different raw sound that came

throught the speakers. I have vivid memories of the All Niters at

Nottm palais, giving the Bali Hai to the 'Mod' scene ,whilst putting

the jazz funk scene on the back burner. this was a very big influence

in my listening pleasure. The big tunes for me during those times

were very 'Twisted Wheel' , but when Billy Preston was giving us

Billy's Bag and Don Covay was doing the 'See Saw' ........... I

couldnt resist it!

79/80/81 saw me absolutely anywhere and everywhere ... we did

Peterborough, Nottingham, Wigan, Rotherham, Alfreton etc etc, whilst

doing local scooter/mod nights in Grantham, lincoln and Newark. Top

places were The Bowling Green in Newark, The Bridge, Newark, the

After Eight, Grantham and the Riverside, Stamford.

We kept it up for the next few yrs, enjoying scooter rallies and

All Niters, until around 1990 when it all stopped for me. 5 yrs of

marraige ended, so i was back 'on it' . quite lean years really,

probably venturing out once a month to Nottingham & local do's.

when i met Debbie 4 yrs ago. things really took off again !

we havent stopped ! its a whirlwnd of DJ'ing, dancing, travelling and

enjoying ourselves. We also enjoy the 50's Rockin scene, the

music is a broad spectrum, obviously including RnB sounds along with

the western influenced style. R&B / Soul has and always will be a

major part of my life. Memories stay with you forever

I'll also add, my fave artists are Ron Isley, a superb voice that

never fails to grab me. Curtis Mayfield, an absolute GOD , Gladys

Knight, a beautiful voice that never falters. Jackie Wilson, nothing

to be said about this legend of the music scene.

My music policy at Ad Lib will be early/mid 60's Soul of the

highest calibre. Hopefully the dancers will appreciate my spins and

the floor will show its' approval

Ed Horwoods profile.Eds playing his "take" on the early scene with dj sets in both the lounge and main room

Iâ"žÂ¢m really pleased to be given the opportunity of Djing at The Ad-Lib in May " a visit to the club has been on my to-do list for a while now.

Glennâ"žÂ¢s asked me to put a few lines together by way of introduction, so here goes. Like a lot of my generation, my interest in music started while at school in the late 70s via the 2 Tone movement and Mod Revival. I got my first scooter on my 16th birthday back in 1983 and began a love affair with scooters, good music and clothes that shows no sign of abating. In my time Iâ"žÂ¢ve been actively involved in the Mod, Suedehead, Scootering and Soul scenes but now in my mid 40s Iâ"žÂ¢m happy to draw on all these styles alongside a multitude of other influences from past decades.

Iâ"žÂ¢ve been buying records since I was 13 and I collect a wide spectrum of musical styles. Besides the expected râ"žÂ¢nâ"žÂ¢b, soul & ska, I also collect doo-wop, modern jazz, rockabilly, reggae and British beat, amongst other genres. Iâ"žÂ¢ve been a resident DJ at Scarboroughâ"žÂ¢s Beat Club since October 2005 and have also done slots at Scarboroughâ"žÂ¢s 99 Soul Club, Dearne Playhouse (Back to the Roots), and I recently helped organise (and Djed at) what I hope will become a regular Soul night at The Milton Rooms (Malton).

My favourite music venues are Nottinghamâ"žÂ¢s Hoochie Coochie Club and Back to the Roots at Dearne Playhouse " both have a great music policy and attract a friendly, knowlegable crowd " as the Ad-Lib has a similar reputation Iâ"žÂ¢m sure Iâ"žÂ¢m going to feel at home when I visit.

CIROS PROFILE

HI ALL MY NAME IS CIRO, AND I HAVE BEEN COLLECTING AND DJING SINCE I STARTED GOING TO THE MOD RALLIES IN THE VERY EARLY 80`S, WHICH THE MUSIC HAS INFLUENCED ME FOR THE LOVE OF NORTHERN, 60`S SOUL AND PLENTY OF R&B. (NOT FORGETTING THE LOVE OF MY LAMBRETTA)

I HAVE HAD THE PRIVILEGE IN DJING WITH SOME OF THE UK`S BEST DJ`S AT SOUL/MOD NIGHTS, ALL-DAYERS, AND ALL-NIGHTERS.

IN 1990, MY PARTNER AND I SUCCESSFULLY RAN “THE KETTERING SOUL CLUBÂ AT THE LEGENDARY “NORTH PARK CLUBÂ FOR LAST SEVEN YEARS UNTIL THE DOORS WERE FINALLY CLOSED IN 1997, THEN A FURTHER TWO YEARS AT “THE WORKING MEN`S CLUBÂ (BOTH IN KETTERING) TO WHICH BOTH CLUBS WERE CLOSED AND THEN SOLD FOR DEVELOPMENT.

MY LOVE FOR THE MUSIC IS STILL VERY STRONG TO THIS DAY, AND I ENJOY TRAVELLING UP & DOWN THE COUNTRY, CHECKING OUT NEW DO`S & LISTENING TO NEW FRESH SOUNDS, AND ALSO MEETING NEW PEOPLE WHO SHARE THE SAME PASSION!

Hi Ian.Looking forward to your set. There is such a wealth of material out there on vinyl that covers our music policy that Ad-Libbers just don't know what is going to hit the decks from one dj to another, or even from one track to another !! Great club for djs to play and for dancers to dance.Small,dark,underground,intimate,atmospheric.We really feel we are acheiving our aim of re-introducing STYLE-HISTORY-CULTURE to the scene, especially to those younger on the scene who want to know how it all began and want to go on the journey "Back to the Roots" with us.It's not nostalgia-it's culture !!!

Hope you're all planning on getting to this night as early as possible.Lots of djs, lots of quality rare/underplayed tracks, lots of STYLE-HISTORY-CULTURE.We do like to think this little club is all about somewhere that followers of the original scene can showcase their vinyl collections.Let's keep spreading the word that the scene grew with the music of the 50s/early 60s.There is a whole new generation just waiting for this music that compliments the upsurge in Vintage/Replica shops that are springing up all over the country.Roll on Saturday 12th May for the Ad-Lib Club.

Fabulous night ! some of the music played was unbelievable. late 50's Blues shouters, Motown from 1960-64, early Soul, the odd 'Northern' tune and a bit of Ska.

what a refreshing change, a dancefloor so packed, you seriously could'nt move. No chavs, no street crawlers, just ticket holders who made the night extra special.

as for DJ's.... some seriously good guys who i'd never heard before. one stuck out to my ears, his name is Ciro (Kettering, not loughborough), fantastic records !

well done Glenn, a superb event

Got to agree - another cracking night, well worth the 100+ miles round trip.

Thanks to Glen for letting me loose behind the decks in the 'Chill out bar area' playing some of my fav bluebeat and early soul tracks and thanks to all those who crammed in to hear what I was playing and all your positive comments on my selection of tunes.

For us the 'Adlib is a must attend venue - if youv'e not been yet then get your tickets and see for yourselves.

Thanks for all your kind comments.I will pass them on to the crew.We had terrific feedback on the night not only from our regular r&b supporters but also from the many younger folk dipping their toes into the early scene for the first time. The chill-out lounge has really taken off big time and last night was no exception. It was as if the djs (Pete Jay-Manifesto,Glenn the Moderator-Tune Up Club Hull,Clive Read-Crewe,Ben Sutton-Select Sounds,Ciro-Kettering and Ed Horwood-Scarborough)were having their own party playing out to a packed room.

What can we say about our 3 guests (Ciro,Ian Parker,Ed Horwood) playing the Main Room. They all nailed the Ad-Libs music policy (see Ian Parkers review above)spot-on.Seasoned supporters actually called their sets awsome. The full dancefloor bares testament to that. The room was given an unexpected treat with a brilliant display of dancing by Keith Driver (World NS Champion from 4 years ago). The room really appreciated that Keith. We hope all three of you will accept any future invites to play the Ad-Lib.

We must also say that our resident djs never fail to impress and could (and do)headline guest events.sharing our music policy.

Finally we are hoping to download some pics of the night in the Gallery taken by a young photography student,Summer Leasing, which we hope will give an accurate impression of what we are about.

fully agree with whats been said,we arrived early this time as we couldn't get in the main room last time !!And we're so glad as we would have missed a great set from was it Christian? This set the scene for the rest of the night, yes all the DJ's were superb and it wouldn't be right to single out any individual (as we never made the chill out room) The mix of music is spot on so just keep it going.

Regards Sharon and nick nack.
