I'm still bored with Brum soul clubbing - not that there's much of it...

I went to a soul night in Brum recently.

I don't want to be too critical (it's a struggle!) but I don't really need to hear "Wade in the Water" by Ramsey Lewis again - The Salem Travelers version - yes, please! It left me more determined than ever to put on a night that doesn't simply pander but attempts to touch the face of God.

I've had to visit the wilds of Wolverhampton and the hairy parts of Hednesford to enjoy any soul dancing fun this year.

So I've decided to create the kind of Friday night out I'd want to attend.

I've stolen the club night's title from one of my favourite books -

"The Heart Of Rock'n'Soul" by Dave Marsh.

It's a collection of writing about DM's favourite 1001 singles - there are plenty of

familiar rock'n'roll, soul, country and pop records and a smattering of doo-wop and it has inspired me to buy even more shiny plastic objects than I did before.

I'd really like to bring part of the book's premise to life by playing some of the greatest but not necessarily well-known soul and pop music of the 50's, 60's and 70's.

The night will reflect my tastes - 60's and 70's uptempo and midtempo soul, girl group and early rock'n'roll records.

My Kinda Playlist

Anita Harris "The Clapping Song"

Bobby Bland "Honey Child"

Revelation "Get Ready For This"

Patty and The Emblems "Mixed Up, Shook Up Girl"

The M.V.P's "Turnin' My Heartbeat Up"

Etta James "What'd I Say"

The Dells "Wear It On Our Face"

The Shirelles "Are You Still My Baby?"

The Box Tops "I See Only Sunshine"

Joe Turner "Honey Hush"

O'Kaysions "Girl Watcher"

Gene Faith "(Call The F.B.I.) My Baby's Missing"

Rufus Thomas "Do The Funky Chicken"

The Modulations "I Can't Fight Your Love"

The Monkees "The Girl I Knew Somewhere"

Claudine Clark "Party Lights"

Aretha Franklin "Since You've Been Gone"

The Stone Poneys "Different Drum"

The Motown Spinners "Sweet Thing"

Barbara Hall "You Brought It On Yourself"

I'll be asking some of my favourite local djs to play alongside me -

Jason Banner, Joe Robertson, Andy Collins, Ruby Firecracker., Dave Le Moderne,

If you'd like to be considered for a dj-ing slot, please visit "Heart Of Rock'n'Soul" or let me know when you're playing out and I'll come along and listen.

"Heart Of Rock'n'Soul" spins vinyl.

Originals and legitimate re-releases only.

No bootlegs/carvers.
