Missing it too Frank! Had a great weekend in London...Hole in the Wall club was very much like our own nites at the Black Lion and it made we wish we were doing a January gig as usual but its a good time to get the place spruced up ready for the 2013 functions. Looking forward to seeing you out and about when we are next in Manchester. Were sorry to miss the first new Wheel but will get there again soon as we can. Roll on Feb 23rd....

Our first Soul Night of 2013,

been looking forward to this for weeks now, especialy having one of Manchesters top DJ's Les Hare (King Bee Records) as our guest. Come down & check out what Me, our regular warm up man Frankie M & Les are playing. If our last night at Christmas is anything to go by it should be another stormer (check out the photos in Members Albums 2012). Playing you classic Northern Soul, Motown & RnB from way back when, right up to current spins, all on lovely original vinyl. Nice private upstairs room with it's own bar, great dance floor & a great selection of real ale & guest beers.

You get all this for just three quid, see you on Saturday the 23rd Feb, Woody C.C.S.

Well it's a very good evening to all the team and regulars at "City Centre Soul" from "The Black Lion" Salford and for anyone new to this event our featured record review of some of the sounds you just might get to hear on Saturday night, a music policy always varied but quality all the way and with an old school Rhythm 'n' Blues backbone to it a great night awaits.

So without further ado, here are the first three spins form record supremo and hat wearer extraordinaire and all round good guy "Woody" from his extensive (and all original issue record collection)

Kenny Bernard "What Love Brings" Pye Records (British release only) later issued on Pye Disco Demand

Ok so my hand goes up into the air on this one my copy is on the later Pye Disco Demand Label but that minor set back aside we have a once massively played disc that in recent years seems to have fell a little out of favour that is well over due for a big come back, perhaps better known for his 1967 release "Pity My feet" British soul singer Kenny Bernard released four singles for Pye sadly for him all failing to make the UK charts yet gaining great acceptance on The Northern Soul circuit.

"What Love Brings" has a distinct British feel to it from a pretty unusual opening vocal turning into a sweet and upbeat dancer catchy and infectious as a dancer can be, close your eyes and the clock has turned back 30 years great sound and well worth re-discovering again for that feel good feeling just insert this record and let nature take its course. (and well checking out one of Kenny's other releases on Pye , "You Gotta Give" is well worth a listen.

Clip features Disco Demand Label from the 70's

The Cruisers "Take A chance on Me" Gamble Records

Produced by music production legends Gamble and Huff come this sweet slice of soul music that has me wondering if this is the same group that recorded "If I Knew on V-Tone from 1960 but if it is or isn't this is still a fine piece of smooth soul music, with it easy and laid back tempo that is a worthy spin at any event and as cool as a Polar bear in Wayfarers this song has a timeless appeal that also has that certain extra addition of being double dipped in pure class, modern popcorn that doesn't get any better than this.

Lester Young "Barefootin' Time In Chinatown" Barry Records

An old time dancer, that would now have the PC brigade of today going into melt down with it's lyrical score (Charlie Chan, Suzie Wong, Fu Manchu to name but three plus a host of other names mentioned as well as a mix of throw back stereotyping.... oh how the world has changed!) a massive strutter that pounds along at a fair rate of knots very much in the style of a "Black Lion Sound" and yet another song based on a 60's dance i'm sure that an eye pulling motion would be applied by dancers of the time but catchy and up beat and telling you not asking for you to "shake dat thang" yet another passed over gem getting a long over due outing.

Well moving on from our last selections here are three more from the vinyl vaults of DJ Woody and talking of hats.

A bloke goes to the zoo one day

This bloke goes to the zoo one day. While standing in front of the gorilla's cage, a gust of wind swept some dust into his eye. As he rubbed his eyelid, the gorilla went crazy, bent open the bars, and beat the fella senseless. When the bloke came to his senses, he reported the incident to the zookeeper. Nodding, the zookeeper explained that pulling down your eyelid means "F**k you!" in gorilla language.

The explanation didn't make the victim feel any better and he vowed revenge. The next day he purchased two large knives, two party hats, two party horns, and a large sausage. Putting the sausage in his trousers, he hurried to the zoo and over to the gorilla's cage, where he tossed a hat, a knife, and a party horn. Knowing that gorillas were natural mimics, he put on a party hat. The gorilla looked at him, looked at the hat, and put it on. Next, he picked up his horn and blew on it. The gorilla picked up his horn and did the same. Then the man picked up his knife, whipped the sausage out of his trousers and sliced it in half. The gorilla looked at the knife, looked at his own crotch, looked at the man, and pulled down his eyelid.

So it's on to business with the choices for today.

Ike And Tina Turner "Crazy 'Bout You" Blue Thumb/Liberty Records.

From the extensive catalog of work produced by Ike and Tina Turner comes this funky number from 1969 with it's catchy rhythm and addictive lyrics and showing that Ike and Tina had talent by the bucketful arranged By Ike Turner and Co-produced by Tina and showcasing the direction that their music was taking, "Crazy 'Bout You" has the rawness of any Tina Turner vocal and is matched to a knock out backing track that marries tight guitar work, throbbing organ and subtle drum beat, an under rated play and a standby song in the much acclaimed Ike and Tina Turner Revue stage shows to a great reception.

Eddie Floyd "Bring It Back Home" Stax Records

Well here is Eddie Floyds take on an evergreen classic from 1968 first performed by Sam Cooke six years earlier, Eddie's version is faster and has a far more of a Northern beat to it, throw into the mix some rasping horn work from the in house session boys at Stax and you have something of a special record here a quality dancer that has just that certain something to lift it to another level and i can say that this is indeed one case were the copy is better than the original and still about at sensible money..well at least for the time being.

Titus Turner "Miss Rubberkneck Jones" King/Blue Beat Records.

In the spirit of the Coasters Yakety Yak this "New Breed" offering from old time Rock'n'Roller Titus Turner just goes to prove how diverse the world of Northern Soul really is, released in 1959 on two very collectable record labels on its original American release on King and on the very sought after British record label Blue Beat, telling the story of a lady that really needs to mind her own business, talking of hats again i take mine off to you Woody for not just finding a record like this but playing it out...thumping sax and a simple beat with a full backing cast in the background. simply great!

Well what a great set of posts while I have been neglecting my duties as PA to the DJ .... this time of year I am buried under piles of marking but I will emerge on Friday night to join Woody at the NQ Wheel and of course I will be assuming my usual position on the door at the top of the stairs in the Black Lion on Saturday. Excited about CCS next session and the sessions to come throughout 2013... the line ups are looking good and there's been lots of interest in us moving forward so I am looking forward to a great night on 23rd.

Russ...I love the reviews and the jokes as usual and will be making sure I catch the rest before Sat. Have to say I am one of the PC brigade but Ive decided to let Barefootin' in China town pass as representative of its time, and a reminder of how far we've come! When it comes to dancing of course I can be very accommodating!

Anyway the only thing standing between now and Saturday is a huge pile of work so I had better get back to it....keep up all the good work you CCS posters its good to see the excitement build! Oh and just for the record...I like to think I provide a certain amount of 'frilliness' to our no frills venue!!! Lol! Thanks for the post Mick...good to hear from you.

Now do I mean 'frills' or 'thrills' ....better ask Woody what he thinks!

See you all Sat, Love Miss T X
