Hi Folks,

think the music played at our venue has broken the boundaries of your average soul night, whilst keeping with our across the board  policy .Many is the time  i have heard someone say " not heard that for a while " and i believe we offer  a mixed selection that changes but includes favourite tunage of the soul folk who attend , all new faces are always welcome and  they do come down on a regular basis ,after all we offer a late licence ,three Djs and all for £ 3 and for a venue in the middle of the city ,that aint bad

Cheers

P.S. £3 for three DJs thats 2.75 for Woody and our special guest and 25p for Me ,great value !!!

Well a big hi to you all.

I've come in just a tad earlier this time simply because as alway there is so much going off at the moment, as summer turns to autumn and the lawn at home is more or less getting it final cut of the year we can rest assured as lots of things are stating to go to sleep for the winter yet the team at City Centre Soul are very much wide awake and working feverishly to bring you all yet another top night of fantastic music at The Black Lion. Here is just a taster of what is on Woody's October play list .

September Jones "Stuttering Sam" Kent Records (UK only release)

Originally a 100 Club 33rd Anniversary single of a rare and previously unissued Northern dancer (and using the same backing as Miki Farrow "Set My Mind At Ease" On Karate records)  i'm guessing that the track dates from around the mid 60's and was forgotten and hidden away in the record vaults of independent label Kapp Records and seeing the light of day only recently (just going to show how much great stuff was about then when records like this get passed over)

Okay so i know that the lyrics might now raise an eyebrow or two but that aside this is a great chunk of real Northern Soul, with a tight and tidy vocal by September Jones this one moves along like a pitbull on acid, well backed in all directions with even a key change or two thrown in for good measure showing a nice helping of tenor sax and pretty comprehensive brass section in full support this might be the next "BIG THING" and is tipped to be so by Woody himself if you're fancing a copy of this perhaps it might be the time to buy one just before the price soar, remember Martha Reeves' "No One There" once a 50p clearence disc. At the moment anything under £100 for this one and you've got youreself a bargin.

Know what you mean Frank,

most days my back feels like it's in three pieces. Smashed my left arm, left  leg & my back in a motorcycle accident a lot of years ago, I get through most weeks on a cocktail of pain killers. If I were a dog I'd have been put out of my misery years ago. The morning after we've been out dancing it takes me ages to stand up straight & walk comfortably, but you just have to grit your teeth &...... Never mind eh, we can still show em how it's done..... (lol)

  Catch you soon Buddy,   :hatsoff2:

Well a very good evening team from yet another warm and sunny day from this side of the Snake Pass,  Sometimes they're occasions when a certain record takes you back a little here is one that has done just that.

The Drifters "This Magic Moment" Atlantic Records

"This magic moment, so different and so new
Was like any other until I kissed you
And then it happened, it took me by surprise
I knew that you felt it too, by the look in your eyes"

So with lyrics so strong they could even bring tears to a glass eye we have only the begining of a true musical masterpiece but there is even far more to this 1960 classic than superb penmanship from Doc Pomus and pianist Mort Shuman, coming from the one of the greatest and most successful soul outfits of all time and with lead vocals by Ben E King you wonder just how much better can this record get.

From the very first seconds of this track you are pulled into it by a host of sweeping strings and then the oh so sweet vocal by Ben E King that lifts this track to another level with fantastic production vaules and impressive backing harmonies i really can't speak too highly of this track an all time favorite and if you want song magic in less than three minutes look no further than this a mid-tempo floater a great play at anytime but what a record to finish the night on.

And just a little item to mention a record that comes with this great quote by Woody when i asked him if this was a big record at the moment he replied "It is at The Black Lion" couldn't have put it better myself.

Hi Russ,

I've said this before & I'll say it again, "you're an absolute mind of information, you could make a good living do these reviews". They're all excellent & so entertaining, talk about craftmanship. Russ "The Encyclopedia Of Northern Soul".

Thats a "great" track Buddy, so right for "now", popcorn seems tobe the "In Thing" at the moment, nice one.

Much more to come from Our Man in Sheffield between now & Saturday the 19th of April.....

Don't forget to come down on the night & see whats going off at The Old Nags Head

Argh ta Woody,

You're too kind but always wonder if i hear the same as everyone else and when to use the phrase "up tempo dancer" instead of amphetamine fulled drive-by shooting" it can be hard at times to make the right choice but normally "up tempo dancer" is the prefered wording.

Well we seem to be having somewhat of an Indian summer at the moment (and i'm not complaining) and that reminds of thie short story.

A married couple is fast asleep in bed when suddenly the phone rings. The groggy husband answers it, expecting the worst. After listening a few seconds, he shouts, "How should I know? Who do you think I am, the weather man?" and slams down the receiver.

"Who was that?" asks his wife.

"I don't know; some bloke wanting to know if the coast is clear."

Okay so without further ado here are a couple of tracks from Black Lion mainstay the one and only Frankie "M" so take it away Frankie

Ruby Winters  "I Don't Want To Hurt Nobody" Diamond Records

From the same person that brought us the 1977 No 4 UK hit "I Will" on the British Independent Creole record label comes this energetic number from 1969 recorded on the New York Diamond label, from the opening bars you can tell this is going to be very much an old school Northern Soul, a fast and pacey dancer peppered with enough breaks for back drops and spins to keep even the fittest of dancers in overdrive. With a raw vocal by Ruby and a solid musical production and there is a lot of it going on from thumping horns to a pounding drum beat this is most certainly one hell of a 100 mph stomper, and for you trivia junkies outthere Britian's own Des O'Connor had a single released on Diamond "I Pretend" in 1968.

Wilson Pickett "Let Me Be Your Boy" Correct Tone Records (original release) Verve Records (2nd release) Cub Records (3rd release) MGM Records UK release.

Well after Wilson's massive world wide hit with "The Midnight Hour" MGM who owned the rights to his earlier recordings re-activated this cut from 1962,  and i'm going out on a limb here but i'm going to say this sounds to me like a pretty fast paced take on early Reggae music (okay or maybe i should say is it more Ska/Blue Beat rather than Raggae) but oh does it work and creates a catchy beat with some nicely worked in sweeping strings with a great performance by Wilson Pickett showing a nice vocal range and far less harsh than the said "Midnight Hour" and just to sweeten the mixture the backing vocal singers on this track are by no others than and some might say "The Ultimate Girl Group" Motown Records The Supremes and musical backing no doubt by many Motown musicians moonlighting from Mr Gordy's stable (The Funk Brothers will no doubt be in there somewhere as well) and off course all uncredited a truly early and fantastic Detroit sound!
