SOUL PROVISION (YORK) on
This event is now over
Soul Provision: A fine selection of Soul, Funk, R&B, Jazz & Rocksteady Reggae all played on lovely black vinyl by Jonny Crawshaw, Gumbo & guests.
March’s Soul Provision was a lovely session with some tremendous music played. You really can’t go wrong with a pub as lovely as The Golden Ball — the Ale was top notch, the atmosphere was electric, the bonfires were burning in the garden and the tunes in the bar were smoking! April sees Gumbo’s status officially change from guest to resident and we welcome Dean Atkins to the decks...
About the DJs:
DEAN ATKINS (Soul Jazz Records / 100% Dynamite!)
Known to his friends as Dean The Mod, Dean Atkins has travelled much of Europe DJing as part of the Soul Jazz Records Sound System. Whilst famed for their legendary Reggae night 100% Dynamite!, Soul Jazz Records refuses to be pigeon-holed as a label releasing highly regarded compilations and original material from genres as diverse as Baille Funk, Electro, Latin, Boogaloo, Hip Hop, Dubstep and of course Funk, Soul, Jazz and Reggae. It is these latter genres to which Dean Atkins is most closely associated in his solo outings, so you can expect only the choicest cuts of Soul, the rawest R&B and the downright funkiest of Funk served up in Dean’s inimitable style.
JONNY CRAWSHAW (Give It Some! Edinburgh / Sunday Soul Shakedown, York)
Jonny made his name in Scotland under the moniker DJRed6 where he ran a number of successful nights at Edinburgh’s legendary Bongo Club; notably his funk club, “Give It Some!”, the Scottish arm of Soul Jazz Record’s long-running Reggae session “100% Dynamite!” and “Solid Steel” on behalf of Ninja Tune. He returned to his home town of York with his young family in 2009 but regularly travels the country with his prized box of 45s. He is known for his eclectic, dancefloor friendly sets covering all bases from Funk, Soul, R&B & Jazz, through into Rocksteady Reggae and beyond.
GUMBO (The Inner Circle Soul Club, Manchester / Raw Soul Express, Newcastle)
Hailing originally from the North East though is now based in Manchester, Gumbo runs "The Inner Circle Soul Club" which has gained worldwide notoriety with it's approach & dedication to Soul & Funk music, having one of the strongest teams of DJs (Gumbo, Dave Ripolles, Soul Sam, George Mahood, Phil Wainwright, Adam Leaver...) and greatest atmospheres you’re ever likely to find! It really is worth making a trip to the club - you will not be disappointed! He has recently taken up a new residency - “Raw Soul Express” - at Ernest, Newcastle, to add to his many residencies in and around Manchester. Gumbo works extremely hard to keep his box sounding fresh and always comes with the killers! Expect heavy beat ballads, sublime mid-tempo crossover & modern soul. Soul Provision is a social session - toe-tapping rather than hip-shaking — and is conceived as a coming together of like-minds in this intimate gem of a pub; The Golden Ball is famed for it's historic interior and excellent selection of Ales (it is also York’s only cooperatively owned and run pub, as well as being the first pub in York to pay the living wage to all staff). If you love great music, great ale and great surroundings, this is the place for you!
Soul Provision is held the last Saturday of every month at The Golden Ball, 2 Cromwell Rd, Bishophill, York. It is Free Entry, starts from 6pm and runs till 11pm (due to the PRS licence — beer is served till 1130pm so we can all sit down afterwards and discuss the music!)
