When you go to Lifeline you know you're going to hear great music and last night was no exception. Despite the absence of Mick H, who is in Australia, there was no drop in quality of the rare soul played, but that is what we have come to expect.

I made my normal trip from London to Kettering where John McClure picked me up at the station and proceeded to Stoke-On-Trent, thanks to him. We actually were a little bit early, got inside Bidds at 8.45. My 100 Club mate Trickster was already there, sitting just inside the entrance. The bar doesn't open till 9 but the music had started. Chalky was, as usual, on first, his set included the Ohio Players' version of Love Slipped Through My Fingers and Dee Dee Warwick's You Tore My Walls Down.

Following him came Andy Dyson, doing his only set of the night. Chalky had got some up dancing and Andy kept them there with Salvation, Joe Hicks' I've Got To Be Free, Sir Joe, Damon Fox, Crazy Baby, Sweet Little Girl and other dance floor favourites.

Cliff Steele was next, he did two sets and mixed up the sounds playing records like Do You Get The Message, Every Move I Make, Gotta Strange Feeling, I'm Lonely I'm Troubled and You Can Win. During his second set later in the night he inc luded Keep Away by the Appointments, a version of the Isleys' Who's That Lady by Black & White Affair followed by a different song with the same title by Tomorrow's Men, which confusingly is the same tune as El Anthony's We've Been In Love Too Long.

Soul Sam did one set, following Cliff's first one. He too mixed the sounds, with his funky tunes intespersed by his big Northern sounds. For example he played funky sounds like Trying To Make Ends Meet, Funk On, Rough Nut and the more Northern Soul's Poets and Margaret Little. He was in good form which is always good to see.

The first of the night's guest was next, Chic, a Lifeline regular. He too started off on a funky note with Charles Simmons' Save The World followed by Foreign Blue Renaissance then Rising Sun's Good Loving, Ann Sexton's I Still Love You and others, moving on to more conventional sounds with the Oxford Knights, the Inmates, Lonnie Russ's Say Girl, the Capitols' Can't Deny That I Love You, the Fascinators' In Other Words and ended his set with his favourite from the Casino John & The Weirdest.

The second guest John Weston followed Chic and opened with Soul Machine, didn't catch the artiste following it with solid Northern tracks like Do You Love Me by Senator Jones and Little Soul's Problems, the Traditions' Twinkle Little Star and Melvin Davis' Lucille. John kept the pace up during his set but did slow things down at the end with the Dynamics' I'm A Lonely Man followed by David Thomas' I'll Always Need You, which I think was my favourite tune of the night.

As I said above Cliff was on again next, followed by Mace. He started with Looking For A Woman, El Corol's Chick Chick, I'm Slowly Moulding, I'm Losing Again, I'd Think It Over Twice (even more on the dance floor for this one), Say Something Nice, Showstopper mixed with some R&B ending with Love Is A Trap.

Chalky again who included Pleasing You, Tastes Sour Don't It, Because I Love You and finished with Kae Williams.

Burnley and Soul-Funktion's Sean Haydon finished the night, he included Birth Of A Playboy but most of his records weren't familiar to me.

At just about 6am I left with Gerry and Carey who run me back to Kettering, thanks to them, hope you enjoy the CD. I got home about 10.45, not too bad considering engineering work on the line to St Pancras.

Not so many in for this Lifeline but still a fair number and the dance floor was in action most of the night. Good to see my friends. Billy and Co from the 100 Club via East Anglia turned up at 1.30, he'd been to an alldayer in Leeds, did a DJ set at Harrogate and then on to Stoke. But he was still able to hit the dance floor, spinning like a good'un, right to the end of the night. That shows some stamina as he left home at 8am on Saturday.

The next Lifeline is in February next year, although I think there'll be Pow Wow Club night in December. Thanks to the DJs for the music and to the Bidds bar staff.
