excellent news.hope this removes the drunken handbaggers in high-heeled shoes accompanied by those spilling beer on this precious dancefloor. please other promoters nationwide take a lead from this and restore our scene to NORTHERN SOUL.then hopefully they will seek their 70s disco-nights elsewhere.

If you want to help secure this format as a regular event at this classic venue then support it now !   if you want to hear and dance to full on Northern Soul , with a classics , underplayed and rare format , from over the years and venues, all on strictly OVO 1ST issue , then this is for you ...

keeping it real in every way is the intention, with real soul people supporting . time to get this ball rolling ..

I hope to leave hot, sweaty and knackered from loads of dancing, possibly with sore feet as an unfortunate side effect.

Given the DJ line up my hopes are well within the level of competence of all the DJ's.

Away you go Clyde........ :hatsoff2:

quality with a capitol 'Q' .......A rarity of an event in every sense of the word as brighouse unshackles the reins and fully fledged rare and brilliant northern soul comes to town for the first time proper, cellar-full-of-soul style!...great line-up of djs and hopefully a spectacular set of playlists for on here and fb.......PLEASE DO!

Unbelievable. ............... Been a regular since 1999 at this venue. You have took it to its knees with your crap music policy, with the same old same old records, Over the last 3 - 4 years it has nose dived into a magnet for hand baggers, singles, and a pick up joint!!!!!!!! And now you have the nerve to ask us to REPOSESS what was once one of the top Northern Soul Nights in the country.   Are you taking the Michael or simply taking the piss!!!!  Traveling 100s of miles to venues as I do you expect us to add another night in the month to REPOSESS BRIGHOUSE ..........Get the original Brighouse sorted first with some tunes that resemble Northern soul classics...Yes it might be the best dance floor, But without the best music..............POINTLESS......

Kev Richardson - I have advocated a move back to old school Northern Soul, but for the last several years have felt overwhelmed, to the point of  nearly calling it a day again, as I did in the mid seventies when the music I always enjoyed was replaced by funkier sounds and funkier supporters. There are venues out there already,  that have grasped the nettle and are running oldies events and with a lot of success. I agree with Leather Souls sentiment, but not the colourful langauge, with regard to another event being added to the growing number of events, but I have supported Brighouse, as he has and would be more than pleased to support this attempt at regaining some ground. It may be several years too late for me as I am already starting to feel my body telling me it is truggling to keep doing the things that ask it to do, not quite the epilogue however, so "bring it on" we will be there to offer support on Friday night and hope that this will lead to a return to Northern Soul at Brighouse on the 3rd Friday of the month in the near future. Best of luck to all involved with this venture.

LEATHERSOULS.

THINK YOU MAY BE MISSING THE POINT A LITTLE BIT HERE. THIS ISNT THE REGULAR FRIDAY NIGHT HANDBAG -BASH.  SIMPLY READ THE EVENT INFO AT TOP TO UNDERSTAND THAT. IT WOULD SEEM TO ME THAT PETE AND FRIENDS ARE TRYING TO PUT ON A 'PROPER' NORTHERN SOUL NIGHT FOR A DIFFERENT CROWD. CANT SEE MUCH WRONG WITH THAT MYSELF. HOPE ITS AS GOOD AS IT SHOULD BE AND BECOMES A REGULAR ESTABLISHED EVENT.............

Kev that works both ways, for years (10+)  we supported Brighouse but it became dominated by the same old 50/100 records and gradually most regulars stopped going, I love Oldies but get sick of Billy Butler, The Brothers, Bobby Freeman etc and I love the Funkier Cleethorpes stuff, so as the saying goes, "You can't please all the people all of the time", anyway good luck to the new venture, though I can't see how you'll keep Handbaggers away, specially now it's front page news. There's already to many Oldies venues, just look on SS & anybody with a box of Boots or bag of CD's can start one, there's at least one every week in the small town where we live.

Spot. :shades:

the same people who danced to Duffy , on that very dancefloor are trying to repossess something they 'helped' to mess up.  it will be interesting to know if they will turn folk away at door, because theyre wearing heels or carrying a purse, not a holdall ?

another case of getting another night going, in a flooded market of events every weekend,  but being OVO makes it better and more accepted of course .....   i will be elsewhere, along with others who enjoy a social night, not a dictators' night

Well me and Bev are gonna give it one last try. Those 4 guys are fantastic DJS and heres hoping that they dig deep and play some of the fantatsic underplayed stuff from not just Wigan but Stafford ,Clifton hall and some of the 80s venues i frequented

If it all generates into a Checkerboard Squares Same old oldies fest then it could well be my last visit

Ok let’s get this a bit clearer...

This is not my night , or my venue, I do not dj here on a regular basis , nor does Mick H or Mark Freeman, it is Ginger’s venue , he is the only constant here, and he wants to move it back to where it once was , even if it’s just a few times a year .. The soul motown nights are successful in their own right, since some people enjoy them, but it’s not the “Ritz” many of us remember.

If you have any issues with the Fridays @ Brighouse then, talk to Ginger .. pointless spouting or trolling on this thread .

I have posted this up for Ginger because he and computers are not a match made in heaven...

Read the header of the event... if you do not understand then ask a friend to help you,

Most will fully agree that Brighouse Ritz is a shadow of what it once was, it has devolved into a casual Soul Motown night far from the days we all loved... however after a conversation with Ginger almost a year ago it was set in motion to have some nights that reflect the days when the Ritz was up at the top of many people’s visit lists, and with very long cues of people to match!

What dancer and soul fan would not like to see the Ritz putting on once again full on Northern soul from over the years, and able to travel with confidence to such a night?? Unless of course there are underlying issues not mentioned?    Which I suspect on this thread there may well be?

As for who will attend? I doubt that it will be without some still coming to “have a look” or some of the casual soul fans, but the advertising and format are designed to warn that it is not along the lines of the regular motown, soul served up on regular Fridays at the Ritz

As for the music policy, I understand there will however be a balance between the classics, underplayed and rare, after all people are coming to dance, it is a dance culture, but I am sure you will not hear “tribute” etc etc ..

The djs playing this night are mainly playing at all nighters all over the country rather than soul nights , the records will be as said , original ,first country of origin , first issues only … no Columbia special products , or second issues , no years after the original “grapevine” twaddle … someone said “ OVO, this must make it right” ? this is the true foundation of any soul night or all nighter, so the adage “ just another soul night” again does not cut it , this is not cd’s , boots, second issues, mp3’s .. this is real deal, so don’t class what is going on here with the bandwagon,”lets do a soul night” lot!

Audience wise .. ? since I, nor anyone but “the Ritz” has control over the door, we hope the flyers and posts have made it clear and the casuals will stay away, or understand this may not be  what they expected over the coming nights of this kind that may take place there, I wish Ginger luck with this ...

hope that helps and even the second motive trolls can toddle off to wherever they are going on Friday and have a lovely night doing what trolls do

atb Pete x

ps .. if any of the posters etc wish to talk records , venues and all things soufull then come and have a chat ,Friday I wont be able to join you at mapperly plains soul night , nor skegg grosvenor weekend , but will be at Lifeline & pow wow all nighter saturday, hope you have a super time ..

I like the DJ line up, those DJ's are unlikely to own a copy of Bob Sinclair let alone play it. I am confident those DJ's will be treating the audience to classic tunes from the Torch, Casino, Va Va, Mecca, Wheel, Catacombs etc and played without compromise.

I don't think they let people put talc on the dance floor at Brighouse; however, the dance floor is bloody good and doesn't need it.

I have a play request - Timothy Wilson - Love is like an itching in my heart.

Well after hearing about this the other week I was thinking about ruddy time to !

We we used to go to the Ritz every time it was on, from the days when Tony started the N S nights, and I have to admit that it was the place to be. We have queued round the block in some damm awfull weather but once in,it was worth it. We made some great friends there and I have danced my heart out on that tremendous floor.

Regular working on a Friday night put paid to a lot of my visits, but of course I knew plenty that still went thro the door and I got regular updates & was was dismayed to hear what was happening to our beloved venue. Same to 50 records, I was told you could even write the play list down before hand and get it pretty much spot on, on the night !!!!!

i had to go and have a look see myself, so not working that particular Fri off we went, dismayed about Sums it up ! We saw a few friends that braved the handbaggers regually had a couple of drinks n a chat so it wasn't a wasted night altogether. But I wouldn't be rushing back that's for sure.

Pete, I like what you have put about getting the place back to what it was, we didn't lose  the venue, the venue lost us with the way the promoters steered it in my opinion. Well I find myself not working this Friday night & I also see some very nice & informative people are attending, the dj line up I can't fault, it's only a 30min drive from home. It could be one hell of a night and one not to be missed, then again I may just go to the pub n chill with the lads and put the world to rights. Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

Troll ?

remember the user name "CHUD" you made up on here? No denying that pete,  your wife even signed one of her posts using that name-  'lv Susan'..I still have the message you sent me using that name. So don't accuse others of being trolls!

I also recall, not too long ago, you played boots regular , even had a carver of Trick me treat me, Cobblestone made.... I also recall you threatening to put a well known DJs head through a speaker because he had a go at you and your 'young friend' for playing boots, when he had the OVO in his box.   Let's not forget sitting in your Nottm flat, five yrs ago, discussing records, when I mentioned that we had a few and we're looking for DJ spots, low and behold , not to be outdone, you started buying 45s.

I could go on, but won't air any more laundry in public, except to say , you're a hypocrite, who hides behind a facade of 'a lovely couple' etc...   Woe betide anyone who sees the real you, as I did!

DJ spots are no longer available to me, since a certain afternoon on cleethorpes pier, so I have nothing else to lose, therefore I have nothing more to say on this matter, including the scene as a whole....

p.s.  Take a day or so to type a response,  don't forget the spell checker
