SOUL PROVISION (YORK) on
This event is now over
Soul Provision: A fine selection of Soul, Funk, R&B, Jazz & Rocksteady Reggae hosted by Jonny Crawshaw.
Next Date: Saturday 31st January, 4pm-11pm
Well, the Xmas party exceeded all expectations both in terms of numbers, quality of tunes, ales consumed... A proper lovely affair!
January is always a bugger of a month, and when you have to wait til the very last day for your next Soul Provision it’d better be worth waiting for, and what better way to brighten the dark days than the man, the legend, DEAN ATKINS! In tow this month is his former flatmate and fiancé to a fair maiden of our good city; NICE BOY DAVE
Travelled Europe as part of the Soul Jazz Records Sound System and now a regular at Carib Soul (Fast becoming THE place for that classy Deep Soul / Low Rider / Firme Rola sound, not to mention sweet Rocksteady, Modern, Xover & more). Dean always seems to be one step ahead of the game, and I know he’s been buying heavily since his last visit...
NICE BOY DAVE
As you might imagine, he’s a proper nice fella with a pedigree in funk & soul. As NON SLICK he produced one of my favourite UK Hip Hop tracks (Genisis Elijah — Jah Bless) so he knows a thing or two about what makes a good tune!
As ever, Soul Provision will be hosted by:
Jonny made his name in Scotland under the moniker DJRed6 where he ran a number of successful nights at Edinburgh’s legendary Bongo Club; notably his funk club, “Give It Some!”, the Scottish arm of Soul Jazz Record’s long-running Reggae session “100% Dynamite!” and “Solid Steel” on behalf of Ninja Tune. He returned to his home town of York with his young family in 2009 but regularly travels the country with his prized box of 45s. He is known for his eclectic, dance floor friendly sets covering all bases from Funk, Soul, R&B & Jazz, through into Rocksteady Reggae and beyond.
Soul Provision is a social session - toe-tapping rather than hip-shaking — and is conceived as a coming together of like-minds in this intimate gem of a pub; The Golden Ball is famed for it's historic interior and excellent selection of Ales (it is also York’s only cooperatively owned and run pub, as well as being the first pub in York to pay the living wage to all staff). If you love great music, great ale and great surroundings, this is the place for you!
Soul Provision is held the last Saturday of every month at The Golden Ball, 2 Cromwell Rd, Bishophill, York. It is Free Entry, starts from 4pm and runs till 11pm (due to the PRS licence — beer is served till 1130pm so we can all sit down afterwards and discuss the music!)
