BLACKHEARTS ALL NITER 2ND JANUARY 2016 ( JOHN VINCENT) Just my take on last night at Bestwood…. I am virtually lost for words this morning following an amazing gig at this legendary venue run by Pete Davies. I’m a veteran of over a 1000+ all night sessions and having done so many it’s easy to remember the real ‘stand out’ gigs in my time. I, like my old buddy Pat Brady have always said ‘you are only as good as your last set’…which is very true. Although I’m not a guy who feels the pressure of the gig, but more the pressure on myself in having to judge the floor without just playing too many ‘easy’ choices and make it really work to create a vibe. In this respect I’ve always been very hard on myself and marked myself out of ten for each gig I did. Now when I score a gig it involves several criteria such as the choice of toons, the order I play them, the dance floor response, the atmosphere and finally the overall vibe. So as it all depends on the ‘right crowd’ as well there is a small percentage of luck in bringing it all together as well. Obviously I’ve had a few tens in the seventies in the big period of the scene at the Casino and Samantha’s and an odd one in the eighties and one strangely enough at the old Skegness weekender some 15 years ago when Dave asked me to play a 2 hour, true Wigan set. The only other ten I can think of was my first gig back on the scene in 1999 in the original Samantha’s gig which was truly electric…But last night was just a ‘niter’, the first of the year of the year maybe but other than that a very well respected gig on the NS calendar run by true afficiando – Pete Davies. Now having listened to the hours before and watched I had no idea how it was going to turn out. Following the young stalwart Jordan Wilson who did a cracking set, I set off on my 60 minute journey. To say the music was well received was an understatement! The youngsters were in force (the future!) and they perfectly complimented the more mature elements of the crowd. Now one thing that I’ve always missed since the seventies is the ‘clap to the beat breaks’…but here it was back in force on the floor…truly amazing. I can only say that last night you made this veteran a very happy guy because it’s a long time since a vibe like that washed over me…truly superb.Jordan Wilson Mark Freeman Ethan Howarth Tom Page John Poole Thank you, if the rest of the year is like last night then it’s going to be a hell of a year. That could be the best niter in 2016 and we are only in the first week. Yes it was that good. Still a full house and dance floor when the lights came on at 6am ! Just got in from blackhearts all nighter. Some great tunes played. .. well done Pete Davies for putting this on. Always a great night. As soon as the doors opened it began to buzz and carried on through to the end. All the dj's did a fantastic job of playing something to please everyone and so keeping the floor full and creating that special atmosphere that gets you hooked on to doing the nighters. A massive thank you to Casper and Susan and all involved for accommodating the loyal nighter crowd by keeping to a strict, no nonsense door policy...
