100 Club Allnighter

Great night , great sets  from forward thinking djs, perfect  night for all of us that travelled up from the south coast, well done  to all involved

80% DISCO. Someone should read the flyer, "6t's", should do what it says on the tin or at least be the main ingredient. I know I'm not the only one who feels like this? There's a reason I've become the Hermit In The Corner, because over the past 4 years I've become excluded. My heart is breaking. 

This 100 Club nighter was a bit strange. For the first time since I’ve attended Ady Croasdell had taken the night off He’d left things in the capable hands of Matt Bolton. Everything went well but it still felt slightly different.  And that is probably good as Matt needs to stamp his personality on the nights that he manages. Last night was a good start.

I got into the club at about 11.15, and Tomas McGrath was on the decks, seemed strang e not to have Ady there, but Tomas was a superb substitute playing mainly oldies but not the usual suspects. I was very pleased to hear Sam Fletcher’s I’d Think It Over Twice, but not so pleased that I was in the middle of changing my shoes, and the laces had got tangled, so I missed dancing to one of the oldies that I particularly like. Another he included was the Four Sonics’ Easier Said Than Done.

James Pogson was next on, included in his set was The Crow's Your Autumn Of Tomorrow. A friend told me that this was a big play at the Cleethorpes Pier nighters back in the day. He also included Benny Harper's My Prayer, which got me dancing, but surprisingly not many others.

By the end of James' first set ti was midnight, time for Butch's first set. He started off with Good News by the Hytones, following on with Salvation, I'm Lonely I'm Troubled (far too fast for me), Ivy Jo Hunter's acetate of where Were You, the Prof's Look At You, Life Is A Miracle, and ending this set with Boulevard's I Still Feel The Same and Love Company's Love Tempo. By that time I was really hot from dancing.

Marc Forrest from the Hip City Club in Berlin followed Butch. I'd like to thank him for playing my request for the Springers' Nothing's Too Good For My Baby, don't hear that very often, in fact I'm sure Marc's the only one I've heard play it for years. He also played John Harris' Hangin' In, love that. His set consisted in the main of uptempo Northern that kept the floor filled.

Mark Gurney took over from Marc, and most of his set was Modern Soul. I must admit that most were not known by me, but they were fine and the dance floor was full. He did include Mother Fox which got me dancing, always liked this one. And for the finale to his first set he went back to the 60s for a couple, and ended with Don't Forget To Remember by Greater Experience.

Tomas and James then double decked starting off with the perennial favourite I Don't Know About You by the Constellations.They played a good mix of 60s and 70s tunes including Sir Henry Ivy's He Left You Standing There, Ishola Mohammed's Open Up Your Heart, You Can Win, Best Is Yet To Come, and the recent Ron Shine release, ending with Sweet Memories.

Time then for the second set by Butch, starting off with Willie Tee and You Gotta Pay Some Dues, followed by Just Can't Please You, then Roller Coaster by the Royal Robins. and Beware Beware. For most of this set he kept the pace at medium tempo, with a couple of exceptions. He included Foolish Girl and Sandy Golden's lovely Your Love Is Everything, which I think is absolutely sublime. Also he played the flipside of the Sag Warfare record, Girl You'd Better Change, my preferred side. Satan Let Me Sleep Tonight by Brenda Starr and Like A Rolling Stone by Milton Wright ended his set, wish I'd got one of the latter when it was cheap as chips, but it was not to be.

Marc Forrest returned when Butch finished and played floor fillers like Lifesaver, I Choose You, I Just Can't Speak, and Point Of View's I'm Superman.

Penultimate set was Mark Gurney's second appearance, and he kept to the Modern Soul sounds including Ujima's I'm Not Ready, and Target's Give Me One More Chance. Again most of his records were new to me. Perhaps he can post a playlist.

The night had flown by and it was 5.30 and time for Tomas to do an Ady and end the night. This he did with a mix of well known and lesser known tunes. He played Bobby Reed's Time Is Right For Love, and then on came Baby I Need Your Loving, and halfway through it the lights came on.

Then it was time to collect your bags and coats, pose for the ending picture, say farewell and wend our way home.

There was a good crowd in, I think we all felt it was ages since the January one. Nice to see some usual and less usual faces. It did clear out after 3ish but there was a good number there till the end. The dance floor was in good shape the whole night, sometimes it gets very sticky halfway through but this time I found it slidey till the end.

Matt's first time in charge went extremely well. I hope Ady had a relaxing weekend, he left the night in good hands. The DJs all did a sterling job, thank you to them. I'm sure all there will be looking forward to the next one in April.
