About The Event

What can we say? the first Soul Prescription surpassed our expectations! The venue felt as though we'd been there forever even though it was our first night. Friendly staff and well kept beer which is quite a rarity in itself! If you're coming straight from work they do excellent food. Smashing turnout even though it was a cold February night and an incredible guest in Mr Ady Croasdell. Job's a goodun!

Hopefully we can build on this and make it even better. For those that haven't been we play a full spectrum of Rare Soul music. All tempos, all ages, all prices, all styles. The only common criteria being quality. We might even get around to putting up some playlists to show you the type of thing you can expect.

Joining us this month as special guest is the Intoxicating Claire Kalvis. A woman of taste and style. Expect excellent tunes.

We look forward to seeing you!

Thursday 10th March is our next instalment of Soul Prescription and our special guest is Claire Kalvis
This is a brief introduction of how she got involved in soul music and the scene.

Otis Redding stole my heart away at the age of 12 or 13, and Soul Music has been my home ever since.

As I preferred Deep Soul, I was never really out ‘on the scene’. Being for the most part territorial and interfering when it came to music, my friends often told me I should consider DJing. However, it took an opportunity to play at Burnt Toast at The Globe Tavern 2013 that made me finally take the hint. I had found a way to share what I loved.

Before I knew it I had a residency at Concrete Bar and a regular six hour set at The Hayward Gallery…but no record collection to speak of. Little did I know at the time that this was to be the first step towards my partnership at Intoxica Records. My neighbour was a friend of Nick Brown and suggested that we meet, as he might have the records I needed. There followed many afternoons spent listening - and finding - more of what I liked. More gigs turned up, from pop-up Vintage events to opening for Valerie June in Shoreditch.

Things continued to fall into place. A chance meeting with Rob Messer at Waterloo Scooter Run put me on his radio show and then as a DJ at South London Soul Train. By chance, Gavin Page and Gilly heard me play at a mellow Sunday ‘open decks’ – after which Gilly told me in no uncertain terms “You have to go to Bilbao”. So I booked. A week before flying out, I was buying clothes in London when I struck up a conversation with the shop assistant. She turned out to be Paul Thrower’s niece and put us in touch. Since Bilbao 2014 I have made several hundred wonderful friends; people that I feel at home with, who are great company and generous with both their knowledge and music.

I recently played in Barcelona at the warm up for Movin’ On with Greg Belson and Pat Bleasdale. I then came home to play the ‘one of a kind’ Carib Soul.

Thank you to Mark, Binsy and Anthony for asking me to guest. I’m looking forward to playing you the songs I love. I do hope you enjoy them. I guarantee it will be a personal and heartfelt set…. after all, it is Soul Music

To add to what has already been said it was a really successful launch night to our new venture . Ady was on top form and Anthony fitted in effortlessly alongside myself and Binsy in showcasing what we are about .

Really looking forward to hearing Claire's selections which I am certain will contribute to and enhance our "Soul Prescription"  night.
