Join us at the Pack & Carriage for a very special night on June 24th.
Music journalist, broadcaster and rare soul collector Stuart Cosgrove will be joining us for June's TSWI on the 24th for a very special night. Stuart will be talking about his new book Young Soul Rebels and later in the evening will play a set including some of the tunes mentioned in the book.
Young Soul Rebels takes the reader on a journey into the iconic clubs of the Northen Soul scene, The Twisted Wheel, The Torch, Wigan Casino, Blackpool Mecca and Cleethorpes Pier. Stuart remembers the bootleggers, the splits that threatened to divide the scene, the great unknown records that built its global reputation and the crate-digging collectors that travelled to America to unearth unknown sounds.
The book sweeps across fifty years of British life and places the northern soul scene in a social context: the rise of amphetamine culture, the policing of youth culture, the north-south divide, the decline of coastal Britain, the Yorkshire Ripper inquiry, the rise of Thatcherism, the miners strike, the rave scene and music in the era of the world wide web.
The evening will kick off around 8pm with Stuart talking about his book and his experiences of the Northern Soul scene. He will then be around to sign copies of his book while the TSWI regular DJs get the music started. Stuart will then transform into our guest DJ and take a turn behind the decks.
This promises to be a very special evening. Why not come along early and enjoy a drink and even one of the great burgers on offer from the Pack & Carriage. It will set you up for an evening of dancing.
This very exciting night is in conjunction with Bookmarks Bookshop, who will be selling Stuart's book at the event.
And it's still free, friendly and 100% vinyl withTSWI regulars Andrea, Ben and Richard playing a mix of highly danceable sixties Soul, Motown, RnB and just a pinch of funk.
