This was our 7th year at Whitby (Only regret is that we were not in from the start)! The whole event seemed better this year, even the bar queue in the main room actually moved quicker than other years. The atmosphere in the town for us was electric (Not sure what Andy's shenanigans refer to?). The Middle Earth and Abbey Wharf were bouncing at times, we did not manage to get into the Buck (Charity weekender) as it was rammed every time we passed but a lot of money raised i believe, for a good cause! Follow Andy's advice ..... BOOK EARLY or be disappointed! Our accommodation is booked on the basis of "We are coming until we tell you otherwise". Great PARTY on Sunday evening whether you were in the main room or the Market Place but particularly in the Met Bar later! Finally a big Thank you to Snowy for allowing those with a disability (My wife included) to be admitted early into the Pavilion. This made a massive difference to us, as it had become increasingly difficult for her to stand on those steps queuing! Counting the days until next year! KTF

Guess Kev & Snowy will surely be honoured by the Whitby Chamber of Commerce for the business and economic uplift they generate every year to co incide with this weekender with literally 000s descending, selling out all the accommodation and packing the shops, restaurants, pubs etc.

Boy was it busy !

Away from the shenanigans in the town, the official Goldsoul Weekenders seamlessly ran along side each other incorporating the 3 roomed Pavilion, the newly refurbished Met Ballroom and Lounge and the Rifle Club all within a few minutes walk from each other. Good to see the 'Alternative Weekender' option for those who missed out on the Pavilion tickets.

Massive upsurge in popularity of the Met Ballroom,  restored to its Victorian splendour - curated by Terry Finn and had on Saturday night fabulous Allnighter tunes with an RnB tinge - what an atmosphere on Friday night - even the heat was authentically re created ! Venue perhaps best described as 'hard core/edgier/Allnighter Northern, electric atmosphere with none of the fancy dress tourists and not mirroring the Pavilion main room. Highlight for me, Simon Hunt , who was on fire  -  with the likes of Leo Price & Band  'hey now baby'(Up-Down) - as with the rest of set, well chosen, great dance floor reaction and applause !

Elsewhere the Rifle Club, curated  by Sheffield's Gary Smith was the venue of choice for those who favour X- over & sweet soul - many going nowhere else over the weekend, it's that good !

The Market Place sessions in the Pavilion are always rather special for me. Hosted by Julie H, the sheer variety was astounding - from 'Modern' to 'Mod', soulful rocksteady  to rare soul and all soul genres in between starting cumulating with a 7ts & 8ts club groove session from Kev Roberts and Sam Evans. Particularly enjoyed Andy Baskett's 7ts /Modern/X-over plays.

Downstairs of course the excellent Modern Room and spectacularly, the 1000 that graced the dance floor for the Northern classics in the main room. That said, tinged with more than a little sadness to hear of the impending Whitby djing and elsewhere retirement of Sean Hampsey. One of the greats on the scene for over a decade, he always brought something rather special to Whitby, this year being no exception, a personal inspiration to me and many others and above all knowledgeable without being anal and a good all round egg. We'll sorely miss you at future Whitby's Sean.

Personally,  the downside to 3 official venues, 5 rooms was that I wanted to be everywhere and some difficult choices had to be made ...and as a consequence missed out on catching some great djs, sessions and seeing so many friends in the process - sorry . Life's hard lol.

Pavilion had its usual niggles with the bar queues, but once punters had found the extra Theatre bar and the additional bottles bars any irritation disappeared.

As said elsewhere, this weekender now sells out in adv. earlier and earlier each successive year. Much of the accommodation for the corresponding weekend next year (2018) has already gone - so be quick and the event tickets have just gone on sale.
