About The Event

Hi Folks!

I’m delighted to advise you that the fifth Dukinfield Soul Night will take place on Saturday 20th  May.

This is our second in-a-row Saturday event as room availability meant Brian and Chris couldn’t quite have the consistency of event they’d hoped for this year (hopefully this will be resolved in 2018).

DJ line up is Brian Lester, Chris Churm and I doing our level best to maintain the standards upon which the night is being built; these being to play quality tunes, on original vinyl only and blending lesser known and less frequently played records with some of the better, well-known tracks you might perhaps expect.

Our address is:

Dukinfield Masonic Hall

62 Old Road

Dukinfield

SK16 4EN

Doors open at 7:30pm and entrance is a quite reasonable (we think) £3.00.

The event finishes at midnight.

I really struggle to get out on a Friday night, so if you too sometimes feel washed out after a late finish at work on a Friday, or you’ve had an especially tough week and can’t drag yourself out of the house when Friday night comes around, then this event is for you!  You’ve got all Saturday to primp and preen, get your glad-rags ironed and your shoes polished…there are no excuses (unless you work on a Saturday of course).

If you’ve been to see/hear us before then you’ll have a good idea of what to expect (and thanks for your support), but if you haven’t been able to get over to one of our events so far then please do consider giving us a try, we think you might just like it!

Many thanks for your support last night.  As ever there was a great cross-section of music to cater for most tastes with the emphasis on quality and OVO.

We were treated to a guest spot from Phil Etchells until 9pm and boy, does Phil guy have some great tunes.  I hadn't met Phil before (and what a top guy he is) and on the strength of his set I'm certain that he'll be guesting for Brian and Chris again.  For me, the pick of his set included Barbara Lynn - I'm A Good Woman, Jewel Akens - My First Lonely Night and Chubby Checker - You Just Don't  Know.

Next behind the decks was Brian Lester, for what looks like his last DJ'ing spot at Dukinfield as he's planning on retiring from DJ'ing; instead he'll be focusing on promoting the event rather than spinning the discs.  This is a real shame as Brian has great taste in music and with Chris Churm is the driving force behind the night.  However every cloud has a sliver lining as they say...as I've bagged a few of Brian's tunes!   As usual Brian gave us a great mix of music that coaxed most of the audience onto the floor at some point during his hour.  Again, a few stand-out records for me would be Little Charles & The Sidewinders - Talkin' About You Babe, The Falcons - Good Good Feeling and TJ Williams - Baby I Need You.

After giving me a hard act to follow  (thanks Brian...you know I crumble under pressure) I covered the 10 'til 11 spot and managed not to totally b*gger up everyone else's great work.  I'd aimed for a few well known tracks mixed in with less frequently played records and based on a few comments afterwards it appears that  I managed a strike the right kind of balance.  A couple of my plays included Kenny Gamble - The Joke's On You, Nat Hall - Why and The People's Choice - Savin' My Lovin' For You.

The last spot of the evening was left in the more than capable hands of Chris Churm.  I would love a rummage in Chris' box (ooh-er!) as he pulls out record after record that's either: 1) pure class, or 2) rare as hen's teeth, or 3) the equivalent of a few mortgage payments...normally all 3! Chris's set glued people to the floor and meant that no-one seemed to drift out before the end of the night.  Just a few of Chris's records included Frederick Hymes III - Time Ain't Gonna Do Me No Favour (probably my current No.1 favourite record), Willie Hutch - Love Runs Out and Lenny Curtis - Nothing Can Help You Now.

I may be biased (OK, there's no 'may' about it) but I genuinely think that if you want to hear quality tunes on OVO that you won't hear at most soul nights then The Dukinfield Masonic really could be the night for you.  Go on...give it a go...you know you want to.

Once again, many thanks for your support.  We hope to see you again on the evening of Friday June 16th for our next soiree!
