100 Club

I'd missed the last allnighter at the 100 Club due to feeling unwell after a tooth extraction so was eager to attend this one. In addition my friend Maria O was one of the guests, about time too in my opinion.

While we queued outside we were treated to a light show by the lightning, and we only just got inside before the rain came down. Rolly was unable to attend so Fay did the honours taking our money. I think the music had only just started as we walked, Tomas was opening the night taking the place of Ady who'd taken the weekend off leaving things in the capable hands of Matt Bolton.

My first foray to the dance floor was when Tomas played the classic Sam Fletcher track I'd Think It Over Twice.

Valentina Salvo made her 100 Club debut next, starting with a couple of Modern Soul sounds: the Temptations' Masterpiece and For Real Inc's The Man. As she got further into her set she included Baby Don't You Weep, Suffering Wrath, There Was A Time and ended this set with Sir Henry Ivy's He Left You Standing There.

Stafford's Top Of The World DJ Guy Hennigan was on after Valentina and kept the pace up, in fact I only recognised one record, Towanda Barnes' You Don't Mean It, and I had to ask Russ Vickers what it was. After he told me I realised I knew it.

100 Club regular Butch was on next, starting with an old Blackpool Mecca record, but I didn't get the title. Later he included Pee Wee Shucks & Huey's Beside Myself, fabulous in my opinion, his Chuck Jackson cover up, Bessie Banks' I Want A Guarantee and ended with Going Back To Houston by Tommy & The Derbys.

Another lady was making her DJ debut at the club, Boomerang promoter Maria Orlovic. It was good to see her up there behind the decks, she's a good friend of mine, and has very good musical taste, and the records to match. Her second play had me out there to I'm Yours, she included some of her most popular plays: Hamilton Movement, Karmello Brooks, Don't Play The Role.

One of my friends said she'd like to hear some oldies, I think Tomas obliged when he followed Maria, with tracks like I Thought You Were Mine and You're Gone. Later in the set he included some Modern Soul and ended with The Best Is Yet To Come.

Valentina opened her second set with Jerry Butler's One Night Affair and included Lady Day And John Coltrane by Gil Scot-Heron, I Gotta Let Go by Marcie Hines, the Jackson Sisters' I Believe In Miracles, and T&T's Something On My Mind. Well done Valentina.

Next was Guy's second set and he kept the pace up with the Righteous Brothers' It's Up To You and finishing with The Flock's Take Me Back.

Then Butch for his final set played his very popular cover up by the Mighty Lovers, guaranteed floor filler. He dipped into classic oldies with What Happened To Yesterday. Both of his sets were predominantly 60s sounds, not all but mainly.

Time for Maria's final set and she had the accolade of finishing the night. She started with the Cosmos Universal Band's Third Eye and mixed the tempos, playing These Memories followed by the Martiniques' If You Wanna Call Me. She gradually lowered the tempo and ended with Richard Caiton's I'd Like To Get Near You. I particularly liked the three or four she played before that, anyone know what they were? She played one more after RC but the lights were on and we were being ushered out.

Musically a very diverse night, something for most I think. A reasonable number were in but it did thin out leaving the diehards at the end. It's possible some were at the Bury nighter and some were thinking of Cleethorpes which is very soon. It was very hot down there, I needed to change my shirt halfway through.

There were a few people who obviously didn't know the etiquette about drinks on the dance floor but as soon as someone mentioned it they put their drinks down, no problem. The dance floor seemed okay to me but my legs and feet are a bit sore now.

The next nighter is August I think but we've got the Cleethorpes weekender soon to keep us happy. Thanks to Matt, the DJs, and the staff of the club.
