About The Event

Hi Folks

Friday 12th January 2018 is the 1st Anniversary of the rare and underplayed soul nights being run by, and championed by, Brian Lester and Chris Churm.

Despite a change of venue it’s fair to class this event as our 1st Anniversary and, as you may know, the nights started at the Dukinfield Masonic Hall in January 2017.  However, issues with the stewards, somewhat pricey drinks and unhelpful neighbours in a primarily residential area saw a change of venue mid-year to our current home at the Ukrainian Club in Ashton-Under-Lyne.  A supportive steward, realistic bar prices and a more intimate room with a great layout, a great stage area and a superb dancefloor has helped make the move to Ashton an overwhelming success.  Interest has been high, feedback has been really positive and attendances have been really encouraging and are climbing.

As we celebrate the 1st Anniversary we’re sticking with Brian and Chris’ stated music policy of 'rare and underplayed' as this approach has definitely struck a chord with those looking for something just that little bit different from the run-of-the mill-oldies nights.  You will almost certainly hear a few oldies, but these will be of the harder-to-obtain, ‘quality’ variety and all will be guaranteed OVO.  Blend these with what we believe are equally great, but less well known, 45s and the outcome is (hopefully) that you have a great night and go home having heard a new few tunes and a few that you might not have heard played-out for a while.

Special guest DJs for the 1st Anniversary are in the process of being confirmed and as soon as I have the final details either Brian or I will post these.

The address is

The Ukrainian Club (Association of Ukrainians)

215 Stockport Road

Aston-Under-Lyne

OL7 0NP

The venue is just across the road from the Shell petrol station, it’s just the right size with a capacity of around 80 and has a really nice separate chill-out/lounge area.  The car park is only small, but there's plenty of parking on the residential streets behind the venue.

Doors open at 7:30pm and entrance is a quite reasonable (we think) £3.00.

The event finishes at midnight.

Be there, be rare...or be square!

Hi Folks,

Just had the DJ times confirmed by Brian:

7:30pm - 8:00pm = warm up time!

8:00pm - 9:00pm = Dave Beech.  Great tunes from a forward thinking DJ...my 'wants' list keeps growing every time I listen to Dave.

9:00pm - 10:00pm = Chris Churm.  Top collector and all round good guy...expect rare gems and a great mix of tunes that'll fill the floor and make you dance until your bunions bleed.

10:00pm - 11:00pm = Mick Howard.  Really looking forward to Mick's spot as I haven't heard him in yonks...but reading his playlists on this site has got my juices going!  A second guest appearance at Brian and Chris' event within a year from this rare soul maestro is a great recommendation and is as close as you can get to a guarantee of satisfaction

11:00pm - midnight = yours truly.  Trying hard not to bugger up everyone else's good work....

Hope to see you on the night!

It's all a front Mick...I'm generally bricking it and winging it...any semblance of 'well-thought-outness' has generally evaporated after the guys before me have worked their magic and I'm in a panic and am doing my best not to embarrass myself.

This DJ'ing lark is considerably more stressful (to me anyway) than many paying customers might imagine.

The only time I really relax is when the needle goes on the last record of my set, and if only then if people have been dancing and no-one has thrown tomatoes (or worse) at me!

See you on Friday....I'll be the one behind the decks who smells like he's filled his pants!
