Just over a week to go. and This 10th Anniversary CO72....finds the Florence Sports and Social Club nr Longton S-O-T Staffs as the venue of 'choice'

This venue boasts a fantastic 'main room' with a fabulous 'chiil out' annexe attached

It also has a great little second room...that we have dubbed the 'Guilty Pleasures room....
...an almost custom made 'space' where the 'Playaz' dig deep and spin what's currently tickling their respective 'fancies'

Expect the unexpected from....

... this group of gentlemen and scholars

Malc Burton

Paul Donnelly

Just a bit of a 'heads up' for the 'Guilty Pleasures' room....this isn't just  another extra room because 'it's there 'type of thing...its a 'planned' session in itself....

very much on the same lines as the   Dolly Parton' room at the 3 Clubs Allnighter ...which is getting rave reviews and establishing its own idenitty

Have been speaking with some of the DJ's today in prep for next week and they are REALLY excited at the prospect of 'diggin deep' and letting us hear what they come up with......They ALL like to spin the 'sounds of the era' in the main room...but there is SO SO much more to their collections.......

This REALLY will be worth a visit...so feel free to spend some time in that room and participate.......the DJ's /enthusiasts in there will make you most welcome....

memory jerking 'posting' from Paul Donnelly

C072 History 2009~2018

In 2009 I picked up on a Soul Source posting by a guy called Malc Burton, regarding the possibility of a Torch Reunion possibly in Tunstall, I and Jez Jones replied and the rest is History, as they say.But what a fucking History.

Malc had this idea of doing a one off gig in Tunstall with likes of Alan Day, Colin Curtis, and Chris Burton etc being approached to give the gig some credibility and authenticity.

Malc wanted to do a gig by the fans of the Torch for the fans of The Torch, with every penny made after proceeds being donated to Charity, the idea hit the spot for me and I decided to offer my support and enthusiasm to hopefully make it happen.
And happen it did.

Jez, I and Nige Brown visited the Ryan Hall, Tunstall it was like a throwback to the 70’s, Caretaker took us upstairs and hey presto it was so fookin shyte it was perfect, indeed I asked him what was the smell? His reply was “ probably mould”…we looked at each other, nodded and 2 seconds later said “ yep, we’ll have it, what dates have you got available?” ……………..”take you pick laddy we ent got any other bookings” PMSL

We went back to Malc and we agreed to book 24th October 2009, no way on gods earth were we prepared for a day that imo should go down in History as one of the greatest days the UK Nortern Soul scene has ever had, yep it was THAT good.

The day was initially promoted via Soul Source and it became obvious from the start the day organised HAD hit the same spot with others, requests for adv tickets on a daily basis became the norm, so much so we went back to the caretaker and asked the question re capacity…..” fucked if I know, I’ll ask around” was his reply.

No offence meant but he must have gone to the same school as Chris Burton as the next day he came back with 420, so we carried on selling tickets, which incidently were printed as a two part ticket, with the part you retained and exact replica of the Torch Membership card.

As we got nearer to 400 adv tickets sold we recievd a phone call from The Ryan Hall saying “ the 420 capacity is for the whole building over 2 floors” ………………………………..oh fuck!!!!!!
“how many tickets have you sold???”
“Not many probably 100 at the most”

Jez then came up with a masterstroke, as we are starting at 3pm why not suggest that we have a meet up @ Hose St at 2pm to pay respects and homage to the old venue which is now a car park. We boarded our coach from Whittlesey and 40 odd Fen Dwellers were on tour to Tunstall.

We arrived in Tunstall at 2-30 where Stuart Gill said “you turn left here, theres where the old Chippy was, stop here driver” we had a arrived, the street was packed, Lambretta’s all over the place, Dicsotrons playing, Swish walking round in a daze, Blue Max smile as wide a Cheshire cat, Nogger giving everybody a clenched fist sign…if we had to go home then, I would have been dead happy.

Malc turns up in the most hideous Green Crombi ever, Jez looked like Harry Worth where I set the bar with my tailored made PRINCE OF WALES Harrington made by Scobie old Torch lad who at the time lived in the Far East.

The doo was due to start and 3pm so back on the Coach at 3-05 and short trip to The Ryan Hall, walked up the stairs and entered the main room, it was 3-15 and I kid you not the fllor was packed, off to the bogs for a piss, whoever left the tap running so the floor was virtually flooded was a genius and the big bottle of BRUT on the window ledge was inspired.

The atmosphere, the old records, bumping into people for the first time in 40 years to some was an emotional roller coaster ride and in some cases a tad too far, Nige Brown will confirm on more than one occasion he had a lump in his throat.

It was one of those days that I will NEVER forget, whilst driving I sometimes follow cars locally that have a window sticker that says “Northern Soul a way of life” not sure about that but if Carling ever did a Northern Soul day it would have been this one.

I am so pleased to have been part of it, the banter with Jez and Malc at 5-30am for 10 years each morning has sometimes set me up for the day, standing side on to Icons like Bentley and Bri Philips doing their stuff behind the decks does make me feel happy, we’ve had to deal with some right ole shit over the last 10 years but we have always maintained the moral high ground when having to deal with sycophantic jealous scum bags.

I hope when the accounts are done re Oct 21st 2018 Malc and Jez can announce a figure which will be incredibly fitting and a wonderful accolade to 9 years of undiluted fun,

PD

NEWS UPDATE...The late Phil Morgan's sister Julie has kindly decided to bring 'Phil's book' !!

Phil's book for those who dont know is probably one of the BEST examples of memorabilia form the early days of the scene that I've had the pleasure to clap my eyes on !!

This really is something else..  and for those who have an interest in that sort of stuff and have never seen this...YOU'RE IN FOR A TREAT !!

In exemplary condition ..this is a fabulous reminder of those 'heady days'
