Peter Andrews 6 Posted July 18, 2018 News Feed As it seems Andy Bellwood's review has been held over till the next issue, he has given us permission to share it for you to see in the meantime:- Plymouth Rarer Soul Alldayer , 21st April . Mar-Jons New Student Bar venue , Derriford , Plymouth . A 700 mile round trip meant expectations for this one were high and yes, they were met to such an extent we are already planning our August trip there from North Yorkshire. So the headline is ; 12 hours of rarer , underplayed with a few more popular oldies on ovo , great sound system & deck cams with each dj bringing something different and varied to the table - with the exception of Paul Rockey and Pete Lyster, all new to us . All got a great reaction from the appreciative crowd and for us , the added bonus of hearing something refreshingly different from their respective collections . No self indulgence , no snobbery - just great vinyl irrespective whether it was an underplayed £10er or a collectors ‘must have ‘ at £000s . Great to hear Paul Rockey playing the modern rework of Dionne Warwick ‘walk on bye’ (one of my radio show plays from last year) - which caused a bit of a sensation as a ‘newie ’ with dance floor reaction and applause to suit . Fabulous pristine , ‘modern’ venue including an outside terrace with further seating & bistro style tables with open , floor to ceiling glass doors and straight onto the dance floor (with adjacent comfy contemporary seating & bar) made for a wonderful and welcoming event . With the clear blue skies and sun Paul Rockey remarked it was reminiscent of the Perpignan Weekender at the Palais de Congress a few years ago . If only other ‘events’ (and the weather ) were like this .... Well done promoters Tony Treby & Peter Andrews , the djs and everyone there . Next ones Saturday 18th August , 1pm - 1am (Sunday), same venue . Contact Tony Treby for full info ; tonyxtreby@gmail.com tel . 07730468707 To finish with , a few plays from each of the djs ; Stephen Rowntree - Jessie James 'If you want a love affair' 20th Century Buddy Miles 'Just a kiss away' Columbia Tommie Young 'That's All A Part of Loving Him' Soul Power Mickie Moonshine 'Name it you got it' Decca El Count Executives 'I want to thank you' Radar Ron & Candy 'Lovely Weekend' Inner City Matt Todd - Eugene Record 'Overdose of Joy' WB Gloria Parker 'The best thing for you' Samar Linda Jones 'My Heart needs a break' Loma promo All night workers 'Honey and Wine' Cameo Bill Harris 'Am I cold am I hot' RCA promo Ivano Alberto Fossati 'Tema' Deluxe Lupo Ferrett Pearson - Loretta Williams 'Baby Cakes' Jotis Demo Gentleman June Garner 'It's gonna rain' Emarey Tina Harvey 'Nowhere to run' UK demo Dee Dee Sharp 'What Kind of Lady' Action Billy & The Moonlighters 'Little Indian Girl' Crystal Ball Joe Tex 'I wanna be free' Dial Elliott Pierce - Jackson Sisters 'I believe in miracles' Mumm Luckey Davis 'It's Not Where you start' Highland Tony Troutman 'What's the use' Jerri Mixed Emotions 'Am I imposing' Specials 'I can't find another' Satch Edwin Starr 'You're my mellow' RicTic Andre Dus - Ohio Players 'Love slipped through my fingers' Tripp LP Freda Payne 'On easy street' MGM LP Freddie North 'The Hurt' RIK demo Kell Osborne 'Quicksand' Titanic Estimations 'You Can't do this to me' Kimberlite Breakaways 'That's how it goes' PYE (Canadian) Tom Yule - Eddie Bishop 'Call me' ABC Velours 'I'm Gonna change' MGM demo Frankie & Johnny 'I'll hold you' Hickory Demo Van Dykes ' Save my love for a rainy day' Mala Young hearts 'A little togetherness' Canterbury demo Beverly Anne 'You've got your mind on other things' RCA Chris Stretch - Cautions 'No other way' Shrine Little Flint 'Pain' Beast Ballads 'I can't see your love..' Matt 108 Posted August 19, 2018 Really enjoyed the dayer - regret missing the first couple of dj spots due to problems on the A303! A good cross section of soul music from the djs. Well done to Tony and Pete for making the event happen- really good venue, dance floor, sound system and the Plymouth Soulies were top draw as always. Keep up the great work and I felt privileged to spin a few tunes at the end. Link to comment
