David Richards and his wife Janice live in Market Drayton and has been nicknamed 'spook' since around 1967 at junior school.

David started off DJing at 16 in 1971 as a resident at the two youth clubs in Market Drayton playing club classics and northern soul.

In the mid 70’s he was became a resident DJ for a couple of years for Tony Petherbridge. On a Friday at ‘The Raven’ @ Prees Heath (formally the Beefheater) and on a Saturday at Whitchurch Civic.

David dropped off the scene from around 1979 until 1986 and then met up with John Venn (Esher) and became a resident DJ for him for about 3 to 4 years at the 86 club in Bridgenorth and the ‘Nautical Will’ just up the Kidderminster road.

Around 1988 he became a resident DJ at ‘the Central’ Cannock alongside Ted Massey, Morris James and Bru; lasting for about 3 years. At the same time David was also resident every other month for ‘Pep’ back at the Raven Prees Heath along with the other residents “Johnny Beggs “ and ‘Duncan Pollet’.

After ‘The Central’ closed he was resident again for the next 2 years at
‘The Cross Keys’ and “Keys Park’ in Hednesford. As these venues were too small Morris started the Aquarius in Hednesford and Daavid was resident there for seven years until it closed in 2002. Nigel Brown joined as a resident during the later ‘Cross Keys’ days and for the 7 years at the Aquarius.

David also guest Dj’d around the Midlands, regularly at the Lea Manor for Martyn Brady, Stafford, Shifnal, Willington, Derby, Telford, Newport, Worcester, Stoke and Shrewsbury plus other one off places .

David hung up his DJ centres in 2003 and sold off his US collection, keeping one, George Smith - I've Had It - in respect of his close buddy Tony Haftkwitz from Telford who passed away after an allnighter at the Lea Manor.

It was around 2010 when David started buying again. As David says he is basically a collector and only gets asked occasionally to play out he doesn’t have any current top 10 plays, and if he did it would it always change depending on where he was. However, don’t be fooled, David has quality and I took the liberty of posting a few to tease ……….

Inspirations - Your Wish Is My Command - Midas

Introducing our next guest dj, Mr Des Parker

Des Parker fell in love with this great music of ours through the well trodden path of the "youth club" through local soul nights and progressing to all nighters, just managing to get to the legendary Wigan Casino before it finally shut it's doors.

In the last 30 - 40 years, Des has never really taken "time off" from the scene and has attended (and occasionally D.J.'d at) many events in that time, more than he would care to remember!!

With over 50 digging trips to the U.S. under his belt, Des has had a vast number of Soul records through his hands, and is continuously hunting for something fresh and exciting to play.

Recently Des has started MD Records with his good friend Mark Anderson, a record label specialises in releasing tracks never released on 45 before.  Watch out for some very special clips on the limited event cd of forthcoming unreleased tracks……

Current spins include:-

Third Generation - It's Our Time

Fun & Funk Family - Shouldn't Have Said Goodbye

Karla Denning - I Bear Witness

Ronnie Walker - Lord What's Happening

Liberty Agents - Baby I Love You

Patti & Emblems - Just Wanna Be Loved

Ethics - From Your Heart

James Robbins - Working

Des brings a wealth of knowledge and experience with his sets and I’m looking forward to hearing….

Without a doubt, your editorial is the best, concise summary of the various DJ's involved in a new venture.

However, having read it, & much as I personally believe that 'our' scene is a Broad Church, I hope that none of the DJ's would feel compromised, but, stating the obvious, the best events must lay somewhere between "unsurprisingly, too rare" & "top 500 attended by born-agains that were never 'there' in the first place"

It is difficult to get it right, & must be an unenviable task.

I still subscribe to the view that the kind of musical event I wish to attend should be progressive, much as was the case in the 70's when I started out. Preferably, an 'under the radar', dark 'niter too......

Nowadays, the events that get closest to that ethos are SoulFunktion, Empty Bottles, GGC, Polish in Bolton & (simply because it has no policy!) Rugby. Deserving of merit are Dark Horses & 'that place in Sandy' (sorry Danny!)

Fundamental to all of those events are the DJ's that are enthusiastic & have not become stale, yet play to the crowd, neither too Mod or R'n'B, not even too rare for that matter. Their playlists are those that get adopted by the other DJ's that lack the initial enterprise. And if you are a DJ that plays a sound that empties the floor, turning your back on everybody does not endow you with some kind of immunity.

So, my comments are not meant to be bleak or discouraging, but I am certain you are aware that keeping afloat is not easy, & you need to keep your fingers on the pulse, as well as be cautious as the scene is in a constant state of flux, due to many factors. Many things may contribute, but you have to suspect that bar takings will often be the make or break for a Club committee! Also, maintaining the impetus during a change of venue (for whatever reason) must be extremely hard, & best intentions may never materialise. Consequently, some time ago we witnessed the demise of the Embankment, though Lenny will pop up somewhere again, looking unbelievingly young, despite his appalling 'sports' jacket. Also regrettable are the cessation of Burnley, Radcliffe (then Bury) & Ibstock, to name a few.

Good Luck!

Many thanks,

I understand your comments and your personal favourite events. Been to many of those myself "SoulFunktion, Empty Bottles, GG, Rugby" - I feel I have a reasonable a feel as most as to what's on where and who it caters for.   I have myself played at 3 of those.

To be honest there is so much on that you can pay and take your choice.

I go to all sorts of events and would say ours will be a mix for sure, the dj's selected provide that. It isn't and won't be progressive in the sense you seek - and it wasn't set to be that - its a mix of rare and underplayed, big oldies and top 500, rnb, crossover and some new releases.  Its across the board to include some things released more recently and 60ts obscurity.  I personally have no real interest in who was there first time around......its history and interesting from that perspective, but have never felt it influence a night particularly - well save some rehashed anniversary do's of course......

Commercially its funded by the 3 promoters, who may well take a hit dependant on numbers. As with most venues of this nature, (successful without our do) the bar take is what the owner will look for and numbers will dictate if we go again or not.

Northampton has been without an event of this nature for 8/9 years and so we believed worth a go based on the counties rich heritage. Two of the promoters live there and I have only recently moved away having spent my life in the area.

I would hope locals support it and give it ago - not often they will hear Fabio Conti from Italy for sure.......alongside Yann and Russ Vickers from the South Coast etc

We shall see Saturday ; but I feel content we have done the best possible to bring undoubted quality to the area... 🙂

Cheers

Kevin Higham

The only other thing I can maybe mention is that some of the selected dj's have tracks which are unique

Yann Vatiste - 5/6 cover ups which if undetected at the 100 club are pretty secure

Des Parker with tunes ready for release on his newly formed label - I had not heard those before

Wayne Napier Gibbins with some one off acetates

Russ Vickers with unknowns and some great cover ups

Most granted in the 60ts vein, but I am certain there will be new things for 95% of the crowd who attend.....

Hope you are successful, but it ok having a few big tunes it's how the dj's put their set together, was never impressed at va va voom thought the original dome was far better with Greg, Carl, Alan and Matt as the front man, Lens Wellingborough was great as was Kempston rovers.

I'm suprised Eric your suggesting those dj's don't know how to put a set together.

Perhaps you'll pop along and tell them personally....

I think that the event will speak for itself on Saturday. The promoters have definitely put together an event worthy of your attendance & a lot of thought, time, money & passion have gone into putting this event together for your enjoyment.

I know some of the DJ's booked to entertain you personally & I have the utmost respect for them, they have the sounds, integrity & the professionalism to keep the dance floor moving & the record hounds guessing & entertained. I am personally really looking forward to the DJ's that I have not heard before, they all have their own following & I anticipate great reactions to their sets.

The events put forward as the leaders of the current Rare Soul Scene are more than worthy of the accolade, I have personally attended most & I am in total agreement. This is a new event, ploughing its own furrow, it will live & die on its own terms on Saturday, but regardless of the outcome, the amount of sheer hard graft that has been put into putting this event on & the promotion of the event has been phenomenal.

I really look forward to seeing you all on Saturday, the uptake of tickets is very encouraging & I'm sure you will be impressed with both the fantastic venue & the mix of soul music on offer, the wonderful soulful people that support these kind of events are really what it is all about, you will make the event the success that it truly deserves to be....so get behind it & make it yours.

See you at the weekend....

Hi Eric, whilst I don't want to speak on Kev's (RareMusicDirect) behalf, I can assure you your opinion didn't offend him or anyone else, positive contributions & feed back is always appreciated & acted upon were appropriate by these guys.

Happy to report that the event, as hoped, spoke for itself, numbers were healthy, the DJ's & music policy worked & was appreciated, judging by dance floor reaction & discussions in dark corners about lesser knowns & secret sounds.

The craic was great too, lots of familiar faces from the scene, along with others & was pleased to see some great deals being brokered for some great records.

Good luck digging & hope to see you at the next event.

Not offended Eric, but negative posts before a new event launch not particularly helpful.

As it happened the event was a great success, those who attended enjoyed it, the djs applauded for their sets - the venue having the right "feel"...so all tuned out well....

Hi Eric - fyi the original Dome events had / have nothing to do with VaVaVoom or vice versa. VVM was at a seperate venue (Boston Arms function room) that was on the side of the same building.  It was never intended to be or billed as any sort of replacement or follow on from the Dome events run by Alan and Carl etc etc. Thanks for your treasured support all the same.
