Raremusicdirect 229 Posted May 17, 2019 Introducing our first guest dj, Quincalla In her words : “It has been a good few years since I started getting into this thing called the soul scene. Where I come from ? I spent my teenage years surrounded by many different musical influences, and that is probably why I am always happy to come across new stuff – whatever it is. I don’t want to just stick to the “norm”. I have never considered myself a record collector or DJ, I simply get my records out from time to time and share what I feel with the dancefloor through an eclectic mix that marks the soundtrack of my ongoing journey. I love lists as much as I hate them, but I have finally managed to pick 5 songs that I would happily play to death any day, any time.” Top 5 : Jerry Butler – Aware Of Love Al Supersonic and The Teenagers – Under Construction Cheyenne Fowler – Come Back To Me Linda Clifford – Runaway Love El Chavo – Hit The Bongo (Hit The Boogaloo) We look forward to Quincalla, new(ish) to the scene, bringing something a little different to the decks J 1 Link to comment

Raremusicdirect 229 Posted June 14, 2019 Introducing our next guest dj, Ian McManus Ian first got into Soul music whilst living in the North East and naturally progressed into Northern Soul, started going to Soul nights around Newcastle, Darlington etc then onto the nighter scene ending up at Wigan Casino in the mid to late 70’s going on and off to the Saturday nighter sessions then only missing a couple of Saturday nights in it’s final 2 years, that’s also where the collecting records bug started. Had a break when I moved South for work and got back on the scene many years ago when I went to the iconic 100 club which got me hooked again and like many others I started collecting records again. I’ve attended and DJ’d at several Soul events in the UK, also at many weekenders on the continent where they’re very open minded to this wonderful music, my travels to soul events following the music I love has even taken me as far afield as America, Australia and Bali which were just superb. Currently a resident at Quality of Soul held at The Boat Club in Notts and been fortunate to have been asked to play a few records at the Northants All-dayer, I hope you all come along and enjoy a day of good Soul music.... Recent plays are; The Fidels - Try A Little Harder The Checkmates - Kissin’ Her And Crying For You Eddie Parker - Love You Baby The Inspirations - Your Wish Is My Command Johnny Wyatt - This Thing Called Love With a depth of knowledge Ian will bring his soulful blend to the venue, can’t wait to hear his selections.. Tickets from £ 10 in advance to £ 12 on the day, you will have to bear the small booking fee. Please book online asap. We were very busy last event and it’s expected to sell out once again. Raremusicdirect 229 Posted July 9, 2019 Introducing our next guest dj, Des Crombie As a child in the 80s, Des Crombie lived in a small fishing town in the far North of Scotland. American Soul music wasn’t something that was easily accessible there. Though, having a modern jazz loving father, Des was brought up listening to bongos and hammond organs, rather than banjos and bag pipes. As a teenager Des was active in the 80s mod scene, frequently traveling south to clubs and rallies. It was during this time he started buying records on his trips. Though while as a child on a holiday to Scarbourgh in a small second-hand record store he bought a white label big hole 45 record that he later learnt to be a Northern Soul record. Progressing through the mod scene and following a move to the big city (Aberdeen) in the late 80s Des found himself as a resident DJ at a local Acid Jazz/Latin Soul club (The Pelican Club). During this time, he also started attending many Northern nights and all-nighters in Scotland and the north of England. Shotts being a regular bus trip with others from Aberdeen and Dundee. It was at these nights that he actively started to build up a large soul record collection, spending time digging through sales boxes in between being on the dancefloor. Over the last 20 years Des has been very lucky to travel regularly to the USA for several months each year on business, having previously lived in Texas with his family. This allows him time to go record digging in the US as well as DJing at local nights. Since the late 90s Des has been helping with nights in the North East of Scotland and guesting over the UK, Europe and USA. Most recently as a resident DJ at the Soul Collective Aberdeen, a progressive Soul and Funk night, and Soul Redemption, a more traditional Northern night. Not really one for listing current spins as it will all depends on the dancefloor but here is a few taken from a recent set he played. Ray Frazier - My baby's hand Rod Keith - You’re Leaving Me Sunrise Movement - Running Wild Carl Woods & Executives - Heart Breaker Black On White Affair - Bold Soul Sister, Bold Soul Brother Vernon Harrell - If This Ain’t Love Ain’t No Cows In Texas Ray & The Blue Satins - She Doesn’t Love Me This will the first visit to Northampton for Des, we are very lucky to have him play........ Tickets from £ 10 in advance to £ 12 on the day, you will have to bear the small booking fee. Please book online asap. We were very busy last event and it’s expected to sell out once again.
