About The Event

The return of the fabulous ‘Dotties Soul Sessions’ - for the festive season ....  there’s nothing quite like it ....we do these only occasionally , same venue , similar format as #1 and #2  but this time (as it’s Winter ) 7pm to midnight , upstairs , which incidentally was used as a (small) dance hall in the war years for tea dances etc .

https://m.facebook.com/dottiesgelatopickering/

Music policy - ovo , rarer , underplayed including x over and modern etc for the dancers and listeners . Think Whitby Weekender Rifle Club on Friday & Sat night , Hamburg Weekender  etc . (The clues in the dj lineup ). One things for sure , it won’t be an evening of Northern Soul stompers .

‘Dotties’ , downstairs & the courtyard , will be open from 11am for food , alcohol , fabulous coffee etc and of course their original 1930s recipe ‘gelato’! Come 6pm we’ll be setting decks up ....

Free admission

Djs lineup

Ian ‘Geordie’ Johnson, Little Av, Mark Etheridge, Gary Smith & Special Guests - Dave Pinches & Tony Smith .

‘Dotties’  is situated in Pickering town centre, hidden away in a delightful mews location and a fabulous and unique  licenced 5ts /6ts styled  Italian coffee bar /cafe /gelato parlour. ‘

To be fair it isn’t large inside or out , by any stretch of the imagination or reality, but perfectly formed. Heaven in the sheltered courtyard,  whist inside captures that 5ts/6ts age with the decor and decoration. ‘Dotties’ has already proved ideal for the previous Soul Sessions ( #1 and #2 ) and certainly something rather unique, different and appealing .....

Been asked again about accommodation for those wanting to stay over /making a weekend of it (Pickering is a delightful market town and tourist attraction in its own right, on the edge of the North Yorkshire Moors , ‘Heartbeat’ country a short drive across the moors to Whitby & the coast etc.) . It’s also the terminus of the North Yorkshire Steam Railway which currently the subject  of a tv ‘fly on the wall’ series .

So try ‘Welcome to Pickering’ https://www.welcometopickering.co.uk/

This ones also been raved about by those staying over at previous ‘Dotties Soul Sessions’ https://www.17burgate.co.uk

Whilst this ones also been popular https://www.blackswan-pickering.co.uk/

both are just a few minutes walk from ‘Dotties’.

Looking forward to Dottie's 3rd session, soul, pizza & gelato (Y) ..... what a great way to almost end 2018.

As this is an evening session, will be spinning some up beat tempo sounds.

Sure to be a great mix from all the DJs.

Great quirky venue in the heart of beautiful Pickering.

Thanks Av . Just seen this on the (excellent) Hamburg Weekender site .  Guess you and Ian will be bringing some of your featured tunes along to Dotties

Avril Lee & Ian Geordie Johnson

AVRIL LEE & IAN JOHNSON (UK)

Avril Lee (Little Av)

»I love all genres of soul music, in particular 60s ballads, crossover, reggae and ska, I have continued to collect soul records since my early teens and have been a part of the soul scene ever since, originally influenced by the mod revival and scooter scene.

I was co-promoter and resident DJ at the Manifesto Soul Club, Yorkshire, which ran for 10 successful years playing across the board soul music. Since then I’ve DJ’d at various soul weekenders and soul nights in the UK and also Hitsville Soul Weekender, Mojacar.

An absolute honour to be asked to DJ at the alldayer at this years Hamburg soul weekender with my partner Ian Geordie Johnson.«

A few current plays from Avril’s box:

Sir Henry Ivy – He Left You Standing There
Just Bobby – I’m A Winner
Lee Williams & Cymbal’s – A Girl From A Country Town
Innersection – Let Me Love Yuh
Weldon Irvine – I Love You
Ella Woods – I Need Your Love
Sheila Ferguson – And In Return

Ian Johnson (Ian Geordie Johnson)

»My love of music and collecting records was influenced by my late father. My sister gave me my first soul record which was JJ Barnes Please Let Me In on Ric Tic in 1975 which I still have to this day, but collecting has taken on a more 70’s funkier style lately.

I started DJing in my cousins club »The Compass Club« in Whitley Bay in the early 1980’s, we had a Sunday soul night at a time when most of the scene had virtually disappeared in the UK and it had become a truely underground scene.
For 11 years I ran the “Friendship Pure Soul” night in Barnsley with my Friend Mark Whiteley, and we also ran the very successful modern room at the Metrodome Barnsley for 5 years regularly filling the modern room to capacity with modern soul afficianados at the 1000 capacity 2 room venue, also DJd at various UK soul weekenders and soul nights since the Late 90’s.

An honour to be asked to DJ at this years Hamburg Weekender alongside my partner Little Av.«

A few current plays from Ian’s box:

TSU Toronados – Please Heart Don’t Break
Wizdom – I’m So In Love With You
Trace Of Smoke – Treasure Mind
Garden Of Eden – Everybody’s On A Trip
Skye – Aint No Need
Fresh – You
Barbara Lynn – Mellow Feeling

What another wonderful ‘soul session’ at Dotties. Big thanks to all who made the trip , the locals and above all the fabulous djs , organised by Gary Smith - Little Av , Ian Geordie Johnson ,

Mark Etheridge , Gary himself and special guests Tony Smith & Dave Pinches . They really pulled out all the stops with their selections ! ‘Jaw dropping’  was just one comment .....’refreshingly brilliant  & different’ being another.

Special mention again to Paul & Zoe at ‘Dotties’ and the team - it’s a rather special and unique venue as is their enthusiasm for these events . Also Steve Crawshaw - who was invaluable in setting up the equipment and ensuring the sound quality matched the quality of the vinyl .

Really appreciated the gushing feedback from those there , and already ‘Dotties Soul Session # 4’ is in the planning .

Hopefully I’ll get the playlists from the djs ....then post on here .

Instant cafe lifestyle ambience at this gem of a place. You are greeted with bright smiles and winning ways as you step off the street, pass through the courtyard and into the parlour. The displays of ice-cream make a dip into your favourite so tempting, and all the time music is floating down the stairs. Decorated with 60s style memorabilia, the top room is compact and soon fills.

Everyone in the room takes an intense interest in what is being played, and boy, there are some real treats. The DJs really don't hold back and bring out all their very best vinyl. The music suits the audience and the soft shuffle dance steps: no whirling dervishes here.

A bright beacon in a cultrial dessert.

Wonderful venue with a fantastic ambience and fine hosts in the beautiful town of Pickering.

Great sets from all the DJs, quality all the way - well done to all concerned and thanks for the invite to spin a few tunes too.

We really enjoyed the night in great company.

Been asked numerous times ‘when’s the next Dotties Soul Session ? ‘

Provisionally the 1st one for 2019 was mooted for Easter . Unfortunately as posted on Dotties own Facebook page , as a result of a serious Scooter accident Dotties is now closed. A few on here have already asked me to pass on their best wishes to Zoe , which I have done along with our own . Hopefully Zoe will make a full recovery and Dotties will reopen .
