Darnsoul 89 Posted January 9, 2019 NOT LONG NOW TO LETS GROOVE PART 2. WE ARE DELIGHTED TO HAVE AS A GUEST MARTIN Martin Dixon . MARTIN IS COMING UP TO LEEDS ALL THE WAY FROM NUNEATON SO WE ARE VERY LUCKY TO HAVE HIM PLAYING FOR US . I ASKED MARTIN TO WRITE US A LITTLE PIECE ABOUT HIMSELF AND HIS DJING SO HERE WE GO ..... Hi Diane & Happy New Year. First started DJ'ing with my mate Brenton Smith when we were spotty teenagers in Crookesmoor & Kelvin youth clubs. It was the mid 70's & we were playing commercial Northern, Philly, Disco & general chart Soul music. My first 'proper' spot at a Soul venue was at Sheffields Kay Gee Bee Soul nights where I did a warm up spot for the late Nev Wherry. Can remember filling the floor playing JJ Callier - Pusherman & Village Of Tears by Benzine. One great record & one truly awful one! Now I only DJ at events I really want to DJ at & they're normally ones ran by close friends. There are far too many DJ's & wannabe DJ's on the scene at the moment so I prefer to take a back seat & listen to the better ones. Whenever anyone asks me who my favourite DJ is I always say hopefully the next one I hear! My all time favourite record is King Tutt - You've Got Me Hung Up & it's been my favourite record since I first heard it played by Soul Sam in a cellar bar in Leeds in the very early 80's. It's closely followed by You Groove Me by Jon Cutler & Kemdi. I first heard it played by a late friend of mine Gary Welsh & had to have it. A week later it was in my playbox too & has been in there ever since & it always brings a tear to my eye for Gary. A special record for many reasons. I can't really pinpoint a number 3 but it's probably any one from Bileo, Ike Strong, Timeless Legend, Luther Davis, Jasper St Company, or anything by Gil Scott Heron or most things that Frankie Knuckles worked his magic on. 2 true musical legends who were taken from us far too early. My favourite current plays are Victor Haynes - Hopping Skipping, Several tracks off the new albums by Paul Newman & also Reel People & from a retro point of view my Hamilton Movement - Found A Lady cover up is pretty good too. Apologies if that sounds a bit big-headed but it really is good & if a top DJ got hold of it it would be massive. Anyway really looking forwards to Feb 2nd & hoping to see a full house & bump into a few old friends. Also if anyone decides to throw tomatoes at me please make sure they're not tinned this time GREAT ARTICLE THANKS MARTIN X 1 Link to comment
