Now here's a soul event with a difference.

For the past three years, a group of like minded soul lovers have come together to witness something just a litle bit 'special'. Special in that, probably the UK's premier soul DJ had been 'coaxed' into adding this venue to his busy European and Asian schedules, albit just once a year, The DJ in qustion is Mark Dobson AKA 'Butch' Over the past events Butch has used this gig to showcase why he is where he is, with the Soul fraternity.

For those who started this journey, many years ago, by going to venues to hear records that could only be heard at those venues, played by DJ's upholding an ethos dedicated to showcasing the finest examples of dancefloor soul, this event has become, unmissable.

On November 30th, we welcome Butch back to Haydock Park, for a 2 hour set, 2 hours of blistering, mind-blowing music that has in the past left many of us awe-inspired, wanting and needing MORE!

You are invited to join us on November 30th, we welcome you even if you have never been before, if you are looking for something a litle bit different then, Butch @ Haydock Park just might be for you

Just so you know that unlike Boris it's not all bluff and bluster, here's an unsolicited review of the the night posted on Facebook today...

My third visit to the Haydock Park Golf Club for the Spirit Of The Orwell, and each time it gets better and better. Absolutely superb music from all the DJs, but Butch was really in a class of his own, a true masterclass as his records were really quite different.

Unfortunately Flanny couldn't attend so his place was ably taken by his son Liam, he did two good sets, plenty of tunes I didn't know.

The other “Orwell” guys did their usual excellent sets, including some current releases, which are often underplayed and can pass under my radar. By the time I normally hear them they have been snapped up and the price has shot up.

Butch took his place behind the decks at 10pm and started off with the Four Dynamics' Things A Lady Ain't Supposed To Do, following it with Martha Starr's Sweet Temptation. I thought I was in the 100 Club, two regular tunes there. And he did include some of his nighter tracks, e.g. Sha La La, It's All Over (Baby), I'm Knocking At Your Heart and Kiss Me Girl but I would say the majority of his set were more on the lesser played Modern Soul side of our music. Not all though, he included a Charmaines' track featuring Sandi Sheldon called Standing In The Need Of Love and a medium tempo girl vocal called You're A Lucky Guy, the latter sounded very much in the girl group style of the 60s.

He slowed down the tempo at the end with records like Love Dreams and I've Been Untrue, and I think his last play was his Little Caesar cover up, but I may be wrong.

I'd like to thank him for playing my request for Infinity's Queen Of My Universe, my favourite Modern Soul record, sadly out of my price range now.

Nice to see so many friends there, some of them unexpected, Soul Sam was there simply to listen to the music. It was dark in there so if I missed saying hello please accept my apologies.

Lately, while I have enjoyed the soul nights I've attended I wasn't getting quite the buzz I normally get. My recent trip to Boomerang in Thorne did perk me up and The Spirit Of The Orwell completed my rejuvenation, all systems go now. Thank you to Steve and co for an excellent night.

..........here's another one from FB from Jem Booth-

What an absolutely excellent night at "The Spirit Of The Orwell"! Many thanks to the "Orwellian DJs" for putting on another superb night. A fantastic selection of music played over a really good sound system - "Butch" played an awesome set - many of his selections were new to me, tip top as usual. This annual night is one I always look forward to - the quality of the music played is always fantastic with all the DJs playing fabulous sets - last night was no exception.

One record stood out for me, not rare, not underplayed and definitely not expensive - readily available to all but just a good quality soul record from one of my favourite artists, just beautiful and a quiet fave from my life long love of soul music.

Thanks guys - please save me a ticket for the 2020 night

Thank You Jem x

................and another 'un from Rob Haigh-

What a superb night out at Haydock park golf club, very busy from the off and sold out by the time we'd managed to get seated and settled. An absolute pleasure to be amongst so many like minded people, very knowledgeable and appreciative. The dance floor was regularly busy, great tuneage from our Spirit Of The Orwell hosts: Tsop Manchester Barry Maleedy, Steve Plumb, Steve Connor and young Liam Flanders, standing in for his dad, Brian Flanny Flanders, with a selection of his very best numbers, we both hope all's well soon pal😉👍
Special guest for the third consecutive year was the maestro himself, BUTCH, 2 hours worth of vinyl from heaven, the only place it could've been made, a stunning across the board selection over 2 hours, he got a fantastic ovation at the close of his set...once again Barry and myself were gobsmacked by the quality of the tunes...a hell of a lot of publishers acetates and cover ups, he's certainly the master of that.
Mentions for Jem Booth, John Townend, Fish, Soul Sam, Carol Gilboy, Tom Dacey & Helen, Dave Lucas amongst others, a whole host of regulars from Lowton and Culcheth, and a few who will beat Wardrobe today, making the trip.
The golf club is a fabulous function room, very atmospheric and dark..it just has that feel good factor.
Well done to the team for another awesome annual get together, roll on next year for part 4!

Top man Rob, thank you x
