I had to drop my son and his girlfriend off in Handsworth and then pick them up again so I had the option of sitting in my car, walking the streets or going to the pub for a few hours. Instead (and mainly because it was free in, I admit I am a cheapskate sometimes) I thought I'd check this out - half an hour zip up the motorway and found it without too much trouble. Got there about 10 past 8 and already it was getting busy, first hour was residents Mel and John, played some decent stuff; really across the board. Stayed for the whole of guest DJ Rob Turner who played modern stuff, some of it pretty obscure and then had to leave about half an hour into Len Cooks's set. Not really my kind of thing but that's not to say it wasn't good. As Mel explained they always get a range of guests so it should be varied over time. Sadly I had to dash off back to Handsworth so missed the last two hours just as the place was packing out. Can't complain at all though as it cost nothing to get in, nice crowd and cheap bar. The really great thing was the dance floor though - basketweave pattern parquet floor on a concrete sub-base in a local club; in my experience this type of floor is sometimes fraught with problems, they aren't always kept clean and sometimes have been affected by moisture and can be horribly uneven and sticky. This, however, was one of the best dance floors I've ever been on, beautifully smooth and slippy. So I really would like to return preferably to some 100mph Northern stuff to give that floor a proper try out! Only did one sketch of a DJ; as I mentioned before I've "given up" black ink and white paper for January - as I wasn't really intending to go out I forgot and brought white paper(!) but used a brown pen, this looks OKish, better than nothing though. I rarely give 5 stars - I've noticed most reviews are by the promoters of the events who inevitably give 5 stars to everything. I am trying to be objective. 2 Link to review
