Deptford Northern Soul Club at Headrow House
Deptford Northern Soul Club are so excited to be in Leeds for the first time.
Formed in November 2016 by lifelong friends William Foot and Lewis Henderson, Deptford Northern Soul Club have earned a reputation as promoters and DJ’s in their own right. Refusing to bow to the pretence often associated with the Northern Soul scene, Deptford Northern Soul Club offer something different, throwing gimmick free parties across the UK & Ireland, DNSC aims to bring together the next generation of Northern Soul lovers.
On the back of the DNSC’s sold out debut in Bunker Club (Deptford, London) back in November 2016 the boys secured a monthly residency at the club. Making a name for themselves DNSC used their residency to give a platform to the best and most exciting young Soul DJs London has to offer. In June 2017, Deptford Northern Soul Club took the party to Glastonbury Festival, playing to a packed William’s Green tent and featured as the 20th best pick at the festival. The rest of Summer 2017 saw appearances at Peckham Soul, Deptford Pride, End Of The Road Festival & supporting Norman Jay MBE at his Good Times Goes East Carnival Party.
In Winter 2017 the party went on the road again highlighted by a support slot for The Manic Street Preachers and Sleaford Mods at The Roundhouse in Camden (London); with stops in Cambridge, Liverpool, Belfast, Dublin, Todmorden and Ilkley before a sold out New Years Eve party back in Deptford’s own Bunker Club.
2018 has taken the boys to new heights, boasting nights at Notting Hill Arts Club (London), Corsica Studios (London), SET (London), The Junction (Cambridge) and with a return to the Menagerie (Belfast); all before heading to Green Man Festival to play to a packed out crowd of well over 1.5k for the highly coveted After Dark slot at The Walled Garden Stage.
OOX (formerly Brother To Brother) formed sometime in January 2018. A series of frankly fortuitous events led to the introduction of Michael Whitehead and Hamish Oliphant, who agreed to co-host a radio session on the local Cam FM station. Upon opening of their record boxes it became immediately clear that both DJs shared the same passion for rough and tough Soul and Jazz records. From there, a bromance was established and the two are now an inseparable DJ unit.
OOX specialise in niche Jazz-Funk, raw Soul and Proto-Disco grooves. Their sets dig through the untold sounds of the late-60s to mid-70s throwing out Northern stompers, super-funky instrumentals and melodic Cross-over Soul to match the occasion. Infamous for their taste in rare vinyl, the two can usually be found digging through dusted crates of long-discarded 7” records, or trawling through reams of Discogs tabs in search of their next big find.
Alongside their work as DJs, OOX head up a series of rare groove nights in Cambridge. These parties have showcased guest DJ performances designed to break from norms in the city. Deptford Northern Soul Club, WahWah 45s, Emanative and Tash LC have all graced recent line-ups, always supported by upcoming local talent and as resident DJs bringing their signature heavy-weight soulful sound.
