About The Event

The COVID-19 measures have left the Rare Soul scene littered with cancelled events and the faithful following home alone at the weekends; so the Bury Town Hall team have decided to launch a ‘virtual’ all-nighter. The show will be broadcast over internet radio every Saturday while we’re under lockdown from 20:00 until the early hours of Sunday morning.

The format will be just like a real event with a selection of DJs from previous and upcoming all-nighters at Bury Town Hall selecting their spots, carefully in order, from actual records they own to keep it real.

You can join us at https://www.radioking.com/radio/soulallniter

Hi Steve,

Texting and Soul-sourcing is enough for me - Poor Simon was texting, Soul-sourcing, Radio Chat Rooming, and normal phonecalling! :D

BAD NEWS !! After logging in to the radio site just prior to commencement of the Early Doors Request Hour, I headed downstairs to make myself a drink in readiness for the proceedings.. When I got back to my Record/Computer room I was faced with nothing but a black screen !! Needless to say my heart immediately sank to the pits of my stomach - fearing I was about to miss out completely on the nights shenanigans.. What do I do ?? As moving the mouse did nothing I was faced with the daunting decision of 'do I switch off and reboot ?? hoping that solves the glitch?? But what if I then can't get back on at all ?? OMG !! How was I going to enjoy, not just the music of the night, but the interaction enjoyed via the banter posted on the chat room throughout the show ?!?

GOOD NEWS !! Without warning the joyous sound of music began drifting through the speakers.. YES !! Okay.. no visuals and so no chatting for me tonight - but at least I could still enjoy the delights of tonight's Music Spinners.. PHEW !! So.. if anyone wondered why I appeared inactive during the show.. Now you know !! With my disappointment at not being part of the chat room conversations quickly becoming a distant memory, I settled down ready to imbibe the tunes to be offered for the next instalment of the Bury Virtual 'Niter

The Early Doors Request Hour has fast become an established part of this promotion - and results in sets of music you would be more than happy to hear out at any mainstream 'live' venue, with this formula proving that successful it was announced the format is to be extended to an All Dayer on 30 May - proceeding from Noon, through until the 'Niter proper kicks off !! Ooooh.. luverly jubberly.. the organisers of Bury certainly know how to tease and please us stay at home Children Of The Night.. I for one will make sure that date is kept free of non-soul tasks in order I can hopefully enjoy the entire days and nights proceedings !!

The first guest for the night was non other than Sir Bob Hinsley.. who was wearing his well-deserved Soul Knighthood with pride as he presented us with 60 minutes of sheer delight with tracks so soulful that if they were a famous chocolate bar, they would without doubt contain 'Two Glasses In Every Bar'.. they were that smooth !! Bob led his set with the appreciations superb 'I Can't Hide It', whilst his last selection was the ever-popular Betty Lloyd on BSC.. Sandwiched between these two 45's each and every record played in between started with either the letter 'C', or the letter 'Q'.. Class and Quality !! What else have we come to expect from a Master of his Trade ?? And Bob NEVER fails to hit the spot..

It's 9 pm now and Simon is about to take the dog for a walk begin his performance.. And WHAT a performance !! From his first 45 - the oh so soulful and underrated Fantastic Four's 'As Long As I live', he plied us with tunes that continued to get better, and better.. and better !! Butch & The Newports.. the awesome Walter & Admirations 'Man Oh Man'.. Quality Ditty after Quality Ditty !! Simons set extended to about 70 minutes in all, but also included a tune I've championed since first buying a copy for £8 in the 90's.. the Other Brothers on Modern.. and also a 'new to me' treat in the shape of The Informers 'Set Me Free' on Black Jack records - another impossible want to add the list !! Simon was in his element and, from here on in is to be known as 'The Weaver' due to his ability to weave a mixture of vinyl - from the ridiculously cheap to the outrageously expensive, in such a manner that the end result is a Tapestry of the Highest Quality. One that everyday Soulies would happily travel umpteen miles to witness in the flesh.. and included a particular 45 that was also new to these ears - but a choice of inspiration.. a Blue Eyed tune of awesome proportions called (I think..) 'Let Yourself Go'.. Take bow Mr Ingham.. Sterling work from a Sterling chap, and undoubtedly the set of the night, for me personally..

It's now around 10.15 and the decks have seen a change of personnel.. with The Great Baz Maleedy confidently taking control of the driving wheel.. I will confess - when it was announced that Baz would be playing for appx 90 minutes, and it was to be entirely tunes of  70's and Modern persuasions, I was apprehensive, to say the least (see last week, and my views of entire sets of such tune types). Still.. with open mind mode installed front and foremost, I decided to board the Baz Excursion Bus anyway, and hope that some of the stops along the way would be to my liking but fully expecting my interest to waver at those that didn't appeal to me.. so off we go a whirlwind tour to destinations of times gone by quickly ensue.. Wigan, Blackpool, Cleggy, Morecombe.. all stops along the way. 10 minutes pass.. I'm happy with the first part of the tour.. 20 minutes - then 30.. and i'm still enthralled by  the selections offered at each location !! And this, to my complete surprise, continues to be the theme for me up until around 11 pm - when, after not having eaten for several hours and with my stomach believing my throat had been cut, I had to take a break  to make a bacon sarnie !! Still back in time to catch the tail end of Baz's outing though, thankfully, as he continued in the same vein and I hear the end of Bad Weather Inc as I reach the top of my stairs.. followed by Brown Sugar's 'Too Late'. Throughout the set we were treated to insightful offerings including the likes of Bileo, Del Reys Inc, and Rideout as examples.. again, all quality offerings !! Now.. Here's the thing.. as Baz neared the end of his allotted time in control I suddenly realised something.. Not only had I wallowed in the pleasurable memories of nights spent shuffling on the dance floor of Cleethorpes Pier, my interest throughout the past hour and a half (ish) hadn't wained in the slightest.. And then it dawned on me.. I actually knew (and liked..) around 95% of the records played !! What !! OMG !! All this time spent in denial and, all along, I discover I'm actually a Closet 70's Fan !! Aaaaaghhhhhh !! lol

My 'Coming Out' epiphany moment was soon behind me though as, at 11.30, It was time for 'Mr Smooth As Silk' Pete Hollander to take command.. Leading us in nicely with Harvey Avernes' 'Never Learned To Dance' before gliding through the next 60 minutes with smooth and soulful delights such as Cressa Watson's version of 'Sweet Temptation', and Lewis Clarke's ' I need your Loving So Bad'. Pete expertly interspersed 60's & 70's classics with discs that have only seen release in the past few years - the likes of Big Lee Dowell's 'What I Done Wrong' being one example. Add to the mix the likes of an alternate take of the Prophets Shrine Masterpiece 'One Gold Piece'.. Wow !! and things like the totally fantastic Willie Tee's 'Take Your Time' (LP only I think..), plus tunes the magnitude of Johnny Mae Matthews  'Big Ticket' scarcity 'I have No Choice'.. and the end result is an hour of class selections, and much appreciated inclusion to the wonderful sets of personal choices we are treated to, and spoiled by, during this period of Lockdown.. Nice One Pete and I'm so pleased I managed to stay up to catch the entire hour..

Jordan was next to take centre stage - and you know to expect the tempo to be upped, and to be entertained by a set of predominantly 'banging' type tunes that Jordan is now synonymous with.. which is exactly what Jordan did !! Classic Oldies mixed with both unissued delights and alternate takes on known songs. Here's the thing with Jordan's sets.. As he is so much younger than the majority of us, his personal 'Soul Journey' is still in it's relative infancy compared to most on The Scene and is something I see as a great advantage for him. Take, for example, one of his selections during the night.. a 45 he was proud to confess to only having come across just a few weeks prior - but a track that the most of us wouldn't give a second glance to, and quickly bypass if perusing a sales box, say.. With the reasons being: we immediately identify with all aspects of said 45.. label, artist, title.. a tune we have all known for the past 'x' amount of decades - not an expensive tune, but one we would immediately bypass in our quest for other delights and instead dismiss it immediately as being, perhaps, 'old hat'.. With it being a 'fresh' tune to Jordan and one that ticks his boxes for personal spin selection, the magic of the record is rekindled for us old 'uns as soon as we hear it again.. Although we may know records inside out when we look at a particular 45, sometimes it is ONLY when we hear them again after so long that we remember just how GOOD these tunes actually are - and if it wasn't for DJ's like Jordan, would probably never listen to a lot of them ever again !! So.. A massive THANK YOU !! to Jordan for the freshness and vitality he brings to each and every one of his sets.. I think our future is in safe hands.. Don't You ??

When Jordan played his last selection and said goodnight, I too decided to call it a night but was smugly pleased with myself that, despite the technical issue suffered, I was able to enjoy more hours this week than I had managed previously.. and with Bury's ethos of 'Quality Before Value' fast becoming their new 'Logo' I can see this as one promotion that will see addition in the 'Norther Soul Promotions of Fame' Bible of Soul !! I particularly applaud how the resident DJ's will rotate their spots in order to compliment the sets of the weekly guests, providing entire nights of well balanced tunes and genres.. Well done again to all concerned !!

'See' you all again in seven days, for the next offering of the biggest event of each week.. None other than BGT !!

No.. Not THAT weekly offering.. but BURY'S GOT TALENT !! 😄 In the meantime.. Stay Indoors.. Stay Safe.. and STAY SOULFUL !! 👍

I couldn't tune in last night but reading this felt like I was there. Great write up on what sounded like another epic night in. Nice one 👍
