About The Event

The COVID-19 measures have left the Rare Soul scene littered with cancelled events and the faithful following home alone at the weekends; so the Bury Town Hall team have decided to launch a ‘virtual’ all-nighter. The show will be broadcast over internet radio every Saturday while we’re under lockdown from 20:00 until the early hours of Sunday morning.

The format will be just like a real event with a selection of DJs from previous and upcoming all-nighters at Bury Town Hall selecting their spots, carefully in order, from actual records they own to keep it real.

You can join us at https://www.radioking.com/radio/soulallniter

...and we also hope to be posting links for use with iTunes, Windows Media Player, Winamp, Real Player & Quick Time in the near future.
We hope you enjoy the show and it goes some way to filling the void and lifting your spirits

They're now talking about 'The Casino' in the radio chat room. I hear a lot of talk about 'The Casino' - There must have been a real gambling problem back then, and at such a young age!

Yeh same - I had to borrow money off the kids for the arcade on our last holiday to Whitby (Do not tell Nina for gawds sakes!)

Well I think I've done well to last this long - given all the exertion I invested in the allotment earlier today, so gonna pop off to my bed.. Oops, I mean I need your car keys Len.. as I'm gonna get some kip 🙃

Now then.. I need to get mesen down there again tomorrow - so my slant on the evening will have to wait until the evening.. providing I don't bore myself to sleep whilst fingering my keyboard.. On that note.. lol

I'm outta here

This show is soooo hard to walk away from - Damn you Simon with your 'Justa walkin' the dawg' silly ideas! I am meant to be a responsible adult, and have a family that I am completely ignoring every Sat night! Thank the lord they like 'BGT' ('Britain's Got Talent' not 'Bury's Got Talent' Johnny).....Your fault Simon! (again)

Go Jordan! I hope you are 'out of the dumps' now mate - We need you to keep all our spirits up

I need to have a 'Soul Mojo' removal operation - It's ironic that I thought I needed my 'Mojo' back, but said 'Mojo' is so destructive! Guess who's fault......Yeh that Simon (Another 'bloke') :pirate:

I now have an 'FBI most wanted' list of 'blokes'

1)  'Pseudo_Lenny'

2) Simon

3) Johnny Fingers

Len

Huge applause to all the key workers and frontliners who have kept us safe, and everyone who's been a part of the bury virtual allnighters who have kept us sane.

Respectfully jacko.

P.s. Can't wait for the alldayer.

Well.. Where do I start ?? There was a certain air of expectancy leading up to last nights BGT – but that wasn’t the only thing in the air lol.. The DJ line-up was incredible.. and some chat room expressions of multiple visits to the men’s room prior to their designated time slots started to come from a couple of the nights spinners.. And who could blame them !! Having myself been faced with many a situation where I’m scheduled to follow a ‘Top Of Their Game’ DJ (Keith Money being one that always made me sweat with fear..) I empathised with their dread of having to follow what was obviously gonna be a night where some of the biggest hitting 45’s ever to grace Planet Soul were likely to be heard in the earlier hours sets.. and you have to try and follow their lead and match the quality effusing from the speakers.. Can someone pass the loo roll please !!

I’ve noticed over these last few weeks that, regardless of who is on the line-up, and whether they be £5 cheapies of £5000 mega 45’s.. It isn’t a case with these Bury virtual ‘niters of the bar getting raised each week – from the very first broadcast the bar was set at a height that even a giraffe could limbo under with ease !! No !! the one common factor involved – the one that results in each weeks show being so enjoyably addictive.. is Q-U-A-L-I-T-Y !!

Simon set the standard for last night’s performance, kicking off proceedings following the Early Doors Request Hour. He had obviously been busy at his loom as ‘The Weaver’ once again worked his magic,, this time producing something akin to The Turin Shroud.. Silky threads - from O C Tolbert’s ‘You Got Me Turned Around’ (which shares the same backing with Toby Lark’s ‘Sweep It Out Of The Shed’) and the Topics ‘Have your fun’ were intertwined with Irma & Larks 45 (same backing as the Cooperettes famed ‘Shing a Ling’) and The Inspirations ‘Gotta Find A New Love’.. Strengthened using a mix of Donna King’s Hot Line outing along with the likes of the Four Tracks Mandingo labelled ‘Like My Love For You’.. with the finishing touches provided via a trio of 70’s delights that included Chuck Cockerham’s immense Mala monster ‘Have I Got The Right’. Follow THAT you bast*ards.. lol

Phil Dick takes over the vinyl duties from Simon just after 9pm.. I don’t know Phil personally, or ever met him in person, but he is one of those collectors who’s reputation goes before them for housing some of the rarest 45’s the world over.. Phil happens to be one of those who surely must employ 24 hour Ninja-trained security in order to keep safe his enviable collection of monster rarities !! His 60 minutes were one hour I was very much looking forward to – and know I wasn’t alone in my anticipation of what was about to happen.. And I can’t see how anybody could deny that what Phil provided was record after record of a who’s who in the world of rare soul music.. From his first 45 of the night we were spoiled with tunes such as Jackie Day on Phelectron.. Johnny Praye.. Lonnie Russ.. Celebrities.. Lester Tipton.. Salvo after salvo of rare vinyl was thrown in our direction, including Phil’s All Time Top Three spins: Cheating Kind, Court Davis, and the Magnificent 7’s ‘She’s Like A Woman’..   And leaving us wanting more with his final 45.. Little Milton’s ‘I’m Gonna Cry A River.. All I can really say to that is.. WOW !! and Thank You !! Follow THAT you bast*rds !! lol again..

Just when you think you must have died and gone to heaven – it’s just after 10.. It’s ‘Sir Bob Hinsley Time’ !! Once again gracing the decks with selections of echelon proportions and providing a master class in the art of seamless dee-jaying.. Someone in the chat room hit the nail on the head when they commented that Sir Bob has been at the top of his game for years – a sentiment I for one defo echo, with awe-struck memories of some of his sets at gigs like The Ritz’s Rarest of The Rare back in the mid 90’s..  If Bob were a DJ back in biblical times I reckon he would easily have parted the Red Sea.. just with the level of respect afforded to him alone !! Holy Moses !! lol.. In addition to playing super soulful ditties such as the 5th Dimensions totally off the scale ‘I’ll Be Loving You For Ever’ and Sandra Wright’s ‘I’ll Come Running Back’, Bob included a couple of 45’s previously found languishing in ancient vaults.. Pied Piper’s Willie Kendrick’s otherwise unissued ‘She’ll Be Leaving You’ plus ‘I’m With You’ from September Jones.. With other offerings during his set including, to name but a couple, Karmello Brooks.. and a new one for me to add to the wants, Bobby Williams ‘Every Lie I Tell’ (how come I’d never come across that beauty before ??) it was time for Sir Bob to take a very well deserved bow as he made his revered departure from behind the decks with his last disc.. a brilliant and rare 45 courtesy of an artist I believe suffered from being in the shadow of her sister Pat.. Diane Lewis, with the Wand labelled ‘Without Your Love’.. NO WAY can you bast*rds follow that !! Chuckle chuckle..

It’s now 11 at night and it’s time for a display courtesy of one of those found imbibing Imodium throughout the evening.. Chris Penn !! I’d not before heard Chris DJ so wasn’t at all sure what to expect – but certainly sympathetic to his apparent nervousness at having to follow that which had gone before !! I think I would have long crumpled under the building pressure, and be found babbling inanely in a corner somewhere, if it were me going on now !! Off he goes.. First option.. Volumes ‘Never Gonna Give You Up’ followed quickly by George Pepp !! Eh ?? Really ?!? Has Mr Penn been on the wind up all this time ?? Cleveland Robinson ‘Love Is A Trap’.. The Martells.. Chris had lured us in with his attempt to garnish sympathy for his supposed ‘dilemma’ and had seemingy been pulling our legs somewhat I think.. while nonchalantly throwing on 45’s like Ed Bruce’s mega scarce ‘We’re Gonna Have A Party’ and The Just Bro’s ‘Carlena’ !! You’re ‘avin a laugh Mr Penn, ain’t you !! lol.. Chris mixed it up by interspersing classics with some 70’s & x-over and throwing in a few early NY productions for good measure, ending his allotted time with the incredible Ty Karim and ‘You Really Made It Good To Me’. What I enjoyed about Chris was his obvious passion for ONLY buying 45’s he loves – as opposed buying for ‘the floor’. This was evident with his statement surrounding his choice of Willie Small on Essica – a 45 known to many for donkeys years but a tune Chris had been recommended and unknown by him only 18 months prior.. full Kudos for your frankness and refreshing honesty.. No ‘Dick Waving’ where Chris is concerned.. just good honest quality soul music.. rare or common, expensive or peanuts.. It matters not in Chris’s house.. Well Done mate..

The Witching Hour is now upon us – it’s midnight, and time for Les Harrison to poop his pants !! lol.. Les was another seemingly overwhelmed by the prospect of having to start his broadcast after listening to some of the best soul music ever produced being played before him.. But this is Les we are talking about here.. a suitable moniker being, I think anyway’ ‘Mr Dance, Dance, Dance’.. Cos you know if Les is on the line-up your legs are gonna be cursing you the next day - that’s for certain !! He obviously gave it some thought as to just how he was going to follow the previous providers of soul by producing an initial ‘musical pause’.. ie. A couple of tunes to allow peeps to regain their composure and let them settle back down.. Then.. BOOM !! Strap yourselves in folks.. We have LIFT OFF !! Curley Moore on Sansu.. Big Daddy Rogers.. Danny Woods on Correctone.. Les was driving his set forward through a juggernaut of movers.. with each offering dragging you back to dance when your feet don’t think they can stand much more !! Syng McGowan followed by Cliff Nobles ‘My Love Is Getting Stronger, Rufus Thomas’s ‘Memphis Train’ immediately took me back to dancing around our front room as a 12 year old.. Followed by Bill Withers’ ‘Harlem’ Les.. Stop It !! I can’t take much more lol.. But Les being Les plies us relentlessly with dancer after dancer.. mixing it up with classics like Frank Del on Valise and the Falcons ‘Good Good Feelin’.. He certainly provided us all with that Good Good Feeling for his 60 minutes !!

Once the last notes of Les’s final 45 had faded away, I decided I too needed to take my leave as it was now 1am, and the exertions of my time at the allotment earlier in the day – and the need for me to return again this morning, resulted in my wishing the listeners a very good night, and leaving them in the hands of young Jordan, and then Robbo, to finish off another chapter in the Virtual Bury Allnighter’s Book of Class Soul Music.. A ‘MUST READ’ for every follower of real soul music..

And so another episode comes to an end.. and each of the DJ’s should give themselves a pat on the back for leaping over, with ease, that Limbo Pole Of Soul..

Next Saturday will be interesting !! (I’m saying nothing, lol).. But until then.. Stay Indoors (but go out lol), Stay Safe.. above all.. STAY SOULFUL !!

I believe we're sharing the virtual decks next week Johnny, can't wait should be another goodun' and what a write up mate, what can I say!!

Cheeers Les.. That's the kind of support I was always used to, and will make me feel right at home so.. Thank You !! 🤣

I know it's dangerous - but I've just had a thought..

Who is gonna do the review for next weeks production ?!?  I would more than happily volunteer.. But I get a feeling that one particular Soul Spinner might result in the best critique of a set in the entire history of Rare Soul - regardless of the crap he plays.. with all other DJ's spins paling into insignificance and appearing a bunch of complete novices in comparison - even if they were to play THE best & rarest 45's on the planet !!

Just saying like.. 🙃
