Bury Town Hall Virtual Allnighter

This Online Soul Event event has now ended

Event Information

Event Type: Online Soul Event

Event Date & Time:

Event Description

The COVID-19 measures have left the Rare Soul scene littered with cancelled events and the faithful following home alone at the weekends; so the Bury Town Hall team have decided to launch a ‘virtual’ all-nighter. The show will be broadcast over internet radio every Saturday while we’re under lockdown from 20:00 until the early hours of Sunday morning.

The format will be just like a real event with a selection of DJs from previous and upcoming all-nighters at Bury Town Hall selecting their spots, carefully in order, from actual records they own to keep it real.

You can join us at https://www.radioking.com/radio/soulallniter

Folks - a bit of an announcment:

The Bury Town Hall team have decided to run the station all day today - not programmed DJ sets; but a shuffle based on the music we've been playing every Saturday night.

A bit of an experiment alongside plans to make some changes as we move forwards

Hopefully you'll enjoy being able to dip in and out or have us as the backing music to your day.

Watch this space

The wife had the lap top and was just listening and was in a perfect world. Music last night was class all djs performed unbelievablely Mr Malloy was my personal favorite closely by Lenny for comment and taste. This is what is the highlight for a lot of peoples week. Great work Simon and the team and djs your time and effort is truely apreciated. for 10 weeks of class nights but all different mix been great to hear so many new to me records that are cheap and rare but that not it, it's the music hats of gents. Still say party at bury when the time is right 100%

Sorry for the delay folks.. It’s called ‘Life’ lol..

Ten weeks of Bury Virtual ‘Niters and I’ve yet to hear more than three records that have been repeated over that time.. Testimony to the wide eclectic tastes and collections that the nominated Soul Spinners have amassed between them, continually managing to pull out gems of distinction with which to entertain us. Last night was no exception – being treated to more delights deep from within the record boxes of the selected DJ’s

The Early Doors All Request Hour once again served up a platter of niceties to set the mood for the evening – and being all request sees a plethora of tunes included that span both the decades and genres.. Last night, for example, saw everything from The Commodores mid 70’s short-lived Wigan spin of ‘The Zoo’, through Gypsy’s Dry Well (sure the tune was lifted from a Moody Blues LP.. To Our Childrens Children or some such title), and also including echelons of class provided by 45’s such as Betty Wilsons’ ‘I’m Yours’ and the sultry Detroit outing of Rose Batiste’s elusive Ric Tic release ‘Holding Hands’. I don’t envy the producers each week, trying to assemble the requests in an order of play that does justice to the first hour each week, but they somehow manage to succeed week in, week out, and deserve great credit for such achievement

The evening proper commenced from 8pm with Bury regular and stalwart Mick Howard dictating proceedings. Mick never ever fails to hit the spot with his offerings, and tonight would not be any different – from his first 45.. Kris Petersons ‘Just As Much’ to his last disc, the big voiced, big production of Kenny Sheppard’s ‘What Difference Does It Make’, he teased us with soulful 45 after soulful 45.. Plenty of 70’s to be enjoyed, mixed together with some classics (Carol Anderson’s Whip recording being a personal fave of mine), a smidgeon of latin – super cheap vinyl (Montclairs ‘Unwanted Love’) to very expensive desirable’s (Innersection’s ‘I’m In Love With You’), and bolstered by inclusions such as the 100 Club’s 33rd Anniversary giveaway of the excellent September Jones’s ‘Stuttering Sam’ along with The Servicemen’s UK Grapevine 2000 (Oh, So Classy) ‘I’ll Stop Loving You’. A couple of tunes that really stood out for me – with neither having before been heard by these ears.. The Marmite garage/soul/funk track by The Grandells ‘Lost Control’ and the bluesy/moody sparse production that is Ken Noble’s ‘It’s Bad’.. an obscure Arkansas release on Alley records from 1967 that ‘did it for me’. All in all, a great way to get the ‘niter underway – and set the tone for what was yet to happen..

When the clock struck 9 I thought for a few seconds that our illustrious event had been hijacked by Mary Berry !! but quickly realised the first of tonight’s guests DJ’s.. Dave Molloy had assumed his position centre stage and was about to offer us a baking master class !! Dave is another of those unassuming collectors who’s respect and reputation arrives at a venue way before he makes his physical entrance.. He didn’t disappoint those tuning in last night as we avidly followed his recipe of soul. A spoonful of Brooks & Jerry’s ‘I Got What It Takes’ was first in his mixing bowl.. with a morsel of the Fidel’s ‘I Want To Thank You’ quickly added. A surprise ingredient saw Carl Burnett’s ‘Jerk Baby Jerk’ thrown in, and served to compliment the flavouring that would later see an added dollop of Lou Roberts’ brilliant (and polar opposite of his poppy ‘Ten To One’ dirge) ‘Everything You Always Wanted..’ Unabated in his blending we witnessed additions of Buster Jones’s ‘Baby Boy’ and the classy Themes Minit 45 ‘Bent Out Of Shape’.. After baking in a hot oven of soulful offerings Dave added the finishing touches using a tasty filling of the smooth & velvety tones of Ruby Winters ‘Better’, with the cherry on the top coming in the form of Brooks O’Dell’s succulent ‘Standing Tall’.. After baking fully for 60 minutes Dave’s expert hands had worked effortlessly to produce one massive tasty treat – big enough to feed and sate the appetites of ALL those listening in, and with most (including mois..) wishing they could enjoy another slice !!

Lenny took microphone duties following Mr Molloy’s set, for an hour of his inimitable taste in class mid-tempo ditties, and proceeded with a ‘short’ statement about the current state of affairs surrounding the ongoing health and well-being of the nation, it’s effects etc..

It’s now almost quarter past ten.. and Lenny finally decides to play some music !! lol.. Although he also continued his patter along the way, entertaining us with tales of varying non-relative ramblings – touching on his concern about a certain ‘leg thing’ that forms the nucleus of his dance steps (apparently..) but also bemusing us with his observations of some general fellow attendees.. in particular those of a ‘periscope’ type stature, and one ‘metronome’ individual of the female persuasion.. !?! Who Knows !! lol.. but it certainly amused, not least, those in the chat room. Tune-wise, Lenny did successfully manage to get sixteen plays on the decks for our listening pleasure.. as always, starting off nice ‘n slow, followed by a seamless increase in tempos – and all where you could dance to your hearts content whist still retaining sufficient stamina to enjoy throwing some shapes to each and every 45 offered up.. Lenny’s usual plethora of class collection pieces was in attendance - as would be expected, and the listeners were suitably pleasured from the discs he did actually manage to get on the turntables, including the likes of J J Barnes’ ‘Lonely No More’; Reggie Alexander’s ‘It’s Better’; Cookie Scott’s ‘I Don’t Care’; with the dancers in their element when the timeless ‘Hard Road To Hoe’, Quaint labelled tune from Otis Lee, emanated from the speakers along with Mickey Laney’s late 70’s spin ‘I’m Gonna Walk’, before finishing off with two classics.. Jimmy McFarland’s ‘Lonely Lover’ and Edwin Starr’s ‘Time’. I’m sure some may have been sitting there wishing Len would ‘cut the cackle’ and play more music.. but then it wouldn’t have been a Lenny spot.. Would It !! I for one wouldn’t change how he chooses to present his DJ sets, cos you just KNOW– without doubt, it WILL be entertaining.. in more ways than one !! Top Man Len..

Baz M. took over at 11pm.. Mr Magic himself !! I say that because it seems that, after weeks of completely different sets of plays, Baz can STILL, and without any effort it seems, pull trick after trick out of his Top Hat.. Just when you think you’d experienced all the profession has to offer by way of illusion and trickery, up steps Mr Maleedy with (what must be box after endless box of..) REAL magic !! No sleight of hand from THIS magician as he regales us with his openers – namely Don Browning’s ‘Dream World’ and The Dells ‘It’s Up To You’.. No chicanery whatsoever over the entirety of his 60 minute show. Whether it was Arthur Freeman’s Jimbo cut, or his mesmerising Hytones Abet 45 ‘ Bigger And Better’; we were left enthralled the way he performed - utilising inclusions of the Firestones Moira rarity, and (a personal fave, again..) Johnny Gilliam’s New York masterpiece ‘Find Yourself Another’; His finale this time around came in the shape of Bernard Dupree’s ‘ You Are Going To Miss Me’.. An extremely relevant trick, I believe.. ‘cos if Baz were to ever give up gracing the decks for our benefit then a lot of the Magic we enjoy from our ‘Children Of The Night’ outings would be SORELY MISSING !! That Harry Houdini geezer has got NOTHING on our Baz..

I’d been experiencing mixed emotions in the lead up to my foray and debut at tonight’s Bury Virtual ‘Niter.. Excitement at the opportunity to offer the listeners a few things that both rock my personal boat and appeal to my particular taste, but also feelings of dread – knowing I was offering myself up for a possible pounding from the critics in the house.. And stress too !! In the knowledge that I would likely feature against some of the best experts in their trade at spinning vinyl of utmost class and envied desirability.. There was every chance I would fail to match the weekly excellence – almost expected now, that Bury has fast become synonymous for.. Added to the fact I literally had a collection of less than 40 pieces from which to make my selections for the night.. and even then had to attempt to somehow present them is such a way as to hopefully make them sound as good as they possibly could.. Now, it would be completely wrong for me to offer critique of my own ‘performance’, and so will instead include my play list in a separate post.. Those who both tuned in last night and view the thread on here will likely NOT pick up on something though.. My written list included the Smoke 45 ‘Give Me Your Heart’.. but instead we heard my unissued acetate cut of the Temptations ‘Power’ !!! It transpired that Pete is a great fan of the track and used his ‘Producer Privilege’ with his decision to make a swap lol.. For any that maybe didn’t know the track, there was also a ‘technical problem’ with the playback of the Denise Germaine ‘He’s A Strange One’, as for some reason it played much slower than the actual recorded track ?? But no great shakes, and most probably didn’t realise anything was amiss lol

I’ll just add that it was a great honour to have the opportunity to spin some tunes, but the one thing that tuning in to Bury these past few weeks has achieved, is to rejuvenate my Mojo !! To the extent that, instead of the less than 40 collection pieces owned at the outset of the broadcasts, my box is now home to over sixty new acquisitions.. with lots more to follow, I’m sure lol !!

With some time spent in the chat room for a short while after my spot I took my leave.. logged off, and went to bed.. Bugger if I could sleep though, lol, and after hours of constant tossing and turning, woke this morning feeling like I had, ACTUALLY, been out all night !! Now THAT’s what it’s all about !!lol

For the last two hours of the night I know that Jordan will have offered another set to keep the listeners entertained – he always does.. but did ponder somewhat as to what wonderfully eclectic delights Mr Cunnliffe might be serving up this fine evening ?? But hopefully will have the answer once all the podcasts have been posted..

The other thing that being an actual participant of the broadcast makes you realise.. is just HOW MUCH WORK actually goes in to producing these shows.. you DON’T know.. you REALLY don’t !! And both Simon and Pete deserve such HUGE praise, and our eternal thanks, for the MASSIVE effort they both selflessly make, each week, solely for the benefit and enjoyment of others.. OUR HEROES.. THANK YOU !!

Next week sees the fruition of the All Request All Dayer, followed as usual from 8pm with another ‘Bury Virtual ‘Niter’.. Can’t wait !!

Further News
The Bury Town Hall team have decided to continue run the station throughout the bank holiday week - not programmed DJ sets; but a shuffle based on the music we've been playing every Saturday night.

A bit of an experiment alongside plans to make some changes as we move forwards

Hopefully you'll enjoy being able to dip in and out or have us as the backing music to your day.
