100 Club Last Night

Recommended Posts

Just wanted to say how last night,s 6t,s nighter , the first visit for the majority of our nine strong group of soul fans ,out to party in this famous place, left everyone feeling buoyant despite the prospect of an early morning train journey returning to Manchester, such was the friendly welcome and inclusion which typifies this place .from its uncharacteristically early opening time to its dancefloor filled conclusion.Beck,s birthday was well spent in a manner seemingly universal to her fellow nighter goers .Namely dancing to some classic stormers, rarely heard but immediately responsive oldies, early r&b, and crossover of a continuous calibre we collectively acclaim as a blindingly good night meeting old and new friends while indulging in numerous and varied party spirits.Good to see you tony my mate, head up lad.thanks to all the Dj,s and evryone involved in presenting a smoothly run night , maybe lower in attendance than some past occasions ,but only encouraged our mates to consider the weekender as the next obvious date for diaries.Just one query Ady, the second to last set you played, an uptempo tune with a female vocal ,with the chorus "i can/cant dance". who was artist and title if can recall please?Heard quite long time ago maybe at previous weekender. Thanks again for a brilliant night.

Is that you Andy? (eer! what are you suggesting I put my head up, I am still doing that farm work you know  ) great to see you as well glad your crowed had such a good time. :D

Must agree this was a stunning killer of a night out with a large number of unknown faces making a splash on the dance floor, totally different experience every time.

Top tunes from all the DJ's with some early hours sets to contemplate for the next nighter from the likes of Mr Money, Mick H and Mr Butch. Thanks again for a top night out.

Just wanted to say first time for us to the 100 club and a big thanks to Ady and all the dj's. The music was right up our street, only problem for us both dancing was the floor was always full. Hopefully will bring more North East Soulies with us in the future.

Cheers Again

What a fantastic night this was!!!

My (and many of my mates) first venture down to the much acclaimed 100 club. It certainly doesn't take much to see why this is such a succesful and long standing event.

When i first walked down the stairs, i was instantly immersed in an electric atmosphere that only comes with particular venues - it soon became apparent as to what all the hype was about.......a gritty uptempo in your face welcome of soul sounds that just stands up and slaps you in the face as soon as you enter the place! Coupled with the immensly charasmatic venue, this really did have the makings of being an amazing night.

You only had to look at the line up last night to know this was going to be something special. The music throughout the night was nothing but sensational. Such a fantastic mix of genres throughout the night with a fantastic flow to keep the dancefloor going into the wee hours of Sunday morning.

ALL the DJ's were absolutely fantastic!!!

I particularly enjoyed Butch's first spot, and thought Keith Money & Mick's second spots were out of this world. Some amazing. Mixing up the tempo to keep things fresh really worked for me, especially when i hit a brick wall at about 4am!!

All in all, superb tunes. Ones ive never heard before, not heard for a while and classic nighter spins. Sure i heard an alternate version on Nolan Chance, cant remember who played it but WOW!!! spectacular.

Was it worth the journey from Leeds and back? Damn right it was.

Would i go again? Damn right i would!! Only disappointment was i havent been sooner.

Ady - long may this continue, excellent.

Think i need to go catch up on some much needed sleep........

Fantastic line up, atmospheric venue, great sounds & yet something was missing for me last night. :D

A lot of the regular faces missing to unfortunately be replaced by some, ahem, rather enthusiastic p*ss heads. :D I hope that's not going to become the norm.

Great to see Aarron down from Leeds, Richard Bayley (who always makes me laugh!), the lovely Toby, Tony Smith I & Tony Smith II, Carrie & Paul, Lorraine, Bearsy & Marie, Mark, Pete Gent, James T & Alison, Andy Rattigan, Ben Summers, Jayne, Kenny, Trickster, Jen, Mark & Sue. Apologies if i've missed anyone... unsure.gif

Thanks to Mick for playing Margaret Little. thumbsup.gif

Pictures in the gallery! :D

Superb line up for Saturday night and they didn't disappoint! Shame Mick Smith was unable to make it, but Pete Hulatt was more than an able stand in.

Was good to see some familiar faces and a few familiar faces were missed. As for the new faces, could have done without them in all honesty, or less of them. Not referring to any new soulie faces here, just chancers off the street looking for a late drink and to over run the dance floor. Think members only might work better imvho.

I actually really enjoyed Saturday, I know the crowd is changing and getting a bit younger and less traditionally Northern but when they react like that to some very high quality soul music, I don't see a problem. I thought there were very few piss heads and virtually no problems with their behaviour, the bouncers have been on the ball recently. There were a couple of girls there with very unusual dance styles who I thought were just drifters who would be gone in a quarter of an hour but six hours later they were still grooving on the floor and having a ball.

The DJs were very good and quite varied, I particularly enjoyed Butch's little blast of 70s at the start of his second spot that seemed much more soulful than some of the others I'd heard recently. Keith and Pete did their usual entertaining sets of class tunes and Mick H gave us some great new tunes to look for and a stunning blast of oldies just when it was needed.

Membership probably wouldn't work at the moment as with the new security costs we have a much higher break even figure and interested passers by are welcome and needed. It's actually surprising how many of the new people have come down specifically for the music. We explain what it is on the door to those who look like they might be in the wrong place and very often they say yes that's what we've come down for. Also I'm not very keen on exclusivity, everybody here has been a newbie and if they'd been refused admission they might have ended up as goths instead. My hair was about 2 foot over the required maximum when I went to my first nighter at Kelmarsh but the skinheads accepted me and I'm still at it 40 years on.

What we need is a new Jim Demetriou to welcome all the new people and guide them through those tricky first few visits! Sounds like a job for Kylie!

Good points there Ady.

Whilst there were some p!55 heads, i didnt notice any p!55 takers and there is a difference. I think whilst ever the passers by (whether young or old) are happy to pay their money knowing what the night's all about, let em in and share the good times.

I cant really comment on previous crowds as this was my first 100 club experience, but as a "young en" myself, its quite nice to see a promoter of your calibre and stature talking this way.

As long as the bouncers do their jobs and eject people who take the michael, then whats the harm in letting "new blood" in?

And of course I must plead guilty to being a very accomplished piss-head in lots of venues over the past four decades. The only club I ever got refused from was the WAG when elitist snob New Romantics took it over and turned the music scene into a f***ing fashion parade.

The 100 club has never failed me in all the years ive been attending 6ts events, and Saturday night was a real blast well done yet again Ady.

ALL the DJs played wonderfull tunes, even though i dont venture out on to the dance floor very often Saturday was the exception most of the bloody night, tune after tune,my knees dont half know it today,i just could not stop giving it some to the records played,

I still get the tingles when i venture down them stairs, just like the very 1st time i attended West Hampstead........love it.

The birthday boy "Bearsy" seemed to enjoy it,nice to see him back to his near nutty self,Marie's a good there mate,im glad you both found each other.

Great to see some younger people in,without them it could be the demise of the club we love to go to.

Well done Ady for another great nighter...thanks.

Toby.

You're right, they weren't p*ss takers & there is a difference. I just noticed that a few people down the front were getting a little annoyed when 2 guys who'd had a bit to drink kept bumping into them.

I love the 100 Club, please don't get me wrong. Saturday night just wasn't my night. To be fair i was recovering from swine flu.. ...so perhaps wasn't at my best.

Roll on Cleethorpes, 100 Club by the sea!

P.S I've never been drunk at a soul do....or in fact ever! whistling.gif:thumbsup:

Having missed the last couple of 100club nighters for various reasons I really enjoyed the last one. The music was smooth and classy all night, with no exceptions. Maybe not packed to the rafters, but you'd expect that with Cleethorpe round the corner. There were enough regulars to keep everything on an even keel and to be honest I enjoyed all the newbies being down there. They were no trouble at all and I like seeing other people juggle their dance style around Burning Sensation and Sweet Temptation. God you should have seen me on the Casino dancefloor.

I think it would be a really nice gesture for the lovely people on our lovely soul scene to chill out a bit and embrace all aspects of soul.

I still remember the first time I wandered down the staircase some 20 odd years ago, not quite knowing what to expext and feelng like I'd come home.

There have been a few times at past nighters where a few people have not really coped or understood what it's all about, the poor things and have had to have someone politely escort them back up the stairs. Saturday night was not one of them.

I had a great chat to Dave (the tattooed man) about all things recordwise, artist wise and any other wise. I hope you complete your Dore collection.

Good also to finally have a good chat to Bearsey-what a really nice bloke you are. We'll certainly catch up later.

I don't know what I'd have done with myself without the 100club for most of my adult life. I know it's just a club, but I'm really really grateful that its there and still running. Maybe not as strong attendance wise but hey I remember the 90's when there were 10 of us and 25 Japanese enthusiasts.

With the quality, and mix of the music on Sat night, which was better IMO than some recent 100club nighters, is about to have a resurge.

Welcome to the 100club (Pheonix nights)

Thanks to everyone who helped make it a good one.

You are right Arron there is a difference.

Young dudes such as yourself journeying down to the 100 Club from Leeds in the furtherment of soulful curiosities - spot on mate, spot on.. thumbsup.gif Opportunist passing trade throwing shapes to mid tempo northern (as one soulie put it  ) is a little different...

The opening post on the Bishops Wood look back (also on on Saturday night) summed it up for me;

Great crowd, in attendance, lots of my best and dearest friends all out for jolly japes and soul'ly fun.

Roll on the anniversary!

I remember the London Mod scene of the 80's only letting known 'faces' and those in the appropriate attire into club nights and the whole thing just disappearing up it's own ar*ehole. I would hate to see the 100 Club go the same way by not opening it's doors to a few new faces every month. Security is fine and I felt Saturday was a good crowd with those on the dancefloor for the first time showing a lot of respect to the old heads (pretty sure I even saw Trickster giving one new punter a few tips).

Thanks again to all involved. thumbsup.gif

Couldn't agree more, Ady. At a do I put on a while back in Worthing, we had a group of young breakdancers show up, doing their stuff. Oscar was there and at one point there was a legendary dance-off. A truly inspirational moment for me, DJing at the time, to see two very related dance styles going at it

All good IMHO & what's needed to keep the scene vibrant - that & Chris gently pointing the newies in the right direction thumbsup.gif

My first visit and I loved it. Can't believe it took so long for me to finally get there.

I thought the mix of young and old is a good thing. I expected a full on northern soul nighter with strict dancefloor 'rules', but it wasn't like that. I understand that young people going mad on the dance floor can be a pain but there were quite a few that literally danced all night and I bet they'll be back next time. They should be encouraged rather than snarled at.

I'll put the 100 club on my list of exciting all nighters along with Burnley and we'll be back down to that there London very soon.

Ady, cheers for playing the Ben E King track for me!

I now feel deeply dippy - anyway good to see you and yes I felt very very shit but the fact it's a great night sort of helped to make me feel better although I truly wanted to be sick...next time I shall be well and up for it.:lol:

One of the best nigths down the 100 that Ive been to and I think nearly every night Ive been to there has been great.

All the DJs played great tunes. Thanks Keith for the bit of crossover and 7ts and all the great 6ts you played as well. Stratoliners and the Montclair's Unwanted Love I never tire of hearing. Ady thanks for Gene Chandler's Mr Big Shot, The Exciters and Gi Gi. So many good tracks that just propel you on to the floor. All the DJs played a blinder.

I agree what a few others have said re: new blood and people wandering in off the street. I think its a good thing to see people enjoying themselves and digging the music as long as they dont take the piss and there was none of that saturday night from what I saw just folks digging soul music.

I didnt last until the end for the first time as I was knackered by 5. I went to a Jazz Dance session on sunday night as well so Im really feeling it today.

Already looking forward to next sojourn down the 100 club. I might get to Cleethorpes yet. the jury is still out on that.

Yup was quality night! Good to see old and new faces as ever. The alternate Nolan Chance was spun by Butch as he outbid me on it on the dreaded 'bay!!! Cheers to Ady for spinning the unissued Gerri Granger which I still leap to the floor to nearly 20 years after first hearing it  Good to seeTony Smith giving it the bifters on the dancefloor most of the night as well. Top night.

Given the first train back to Leeds wasn't till 10am, we got one back to Manchester at 8am. Rich Bayley and I zig zagged all the way to Euston and then grabbed 40 winks in the station, before hopping on the oblivion express back oop north (Rich just about managed to set his alarm to wake us both up!). Happy days!

Top tunes as well, heard many that I hadn't heard before, heard some good classic tracks as well, thanks for Jackie day naughty boy too!

Thanks to all and hope to get down there again soon

Had a lot of fun on Saturday, with excellent company and music  . I have to admit to being less than gruntled early on with the decorum on the floor (how come folks who don't move their feet when they dance take up sooo much more space than those who do :P ), At one point, Simsy and I did discuss linking arms and clearing it up a bit  , but it got better as the night went on (well, apart from the two pissheads who never got over the Happy Mondays :P ).

On reflection, I think those on the thread who have stuck up for the "walk-up" punters have an unanswerable case (not least, in Ady's case, financial), and it was good to see many younger soul fans there who had travelled for their 1st visit. Seemed to be a few younger punters around at the last Middleton too - could be a real shot in the arm for the Nighter scene :P

Top DJ on the night for me was Keith Money, but I thought there great sets all night. Only downer for me is the 6am finish, as those of us with kestrels to exercise and whippets to feed oop north have a long wait at Kings Cross and Euston (although Rich Buckley and I can recommend the Burger King for some quality shut-eye!)
