What's The Best Soul Tape You've Ever Been Given?

Recommended Posts

Best one for me, on sheer quality, was Derek Pearsons 'Shades of Soul' tape Oct 1996.

Track Listing included:

Black & Blue - What I got

George Hughley - Thats why I cry

Aretha Franklin - Don't let me lose this dream

Tears - Good luck my love

Cam Cameron - They say

Betty O'Brien - She'll be gone

Dee Dee Warwick - Worth every tear I cry

Rose Brooks - I'm moaning

Syl Johnson - We did it

Ruby Carter - Unlucky girl

Terry Callier - Ordinary Joe

It was the first time I'd heard the first 5 tracks and just blew me away. Still enjoy listening to it today.

Had one in the early 70's off Brian 45 Phillips....had all the big tunes of the day on...absolutely fantastic it was.....think I copied it for loads of people.....still talked about today.

Also had one off Les Cockell around same time....sublime....some of the tunes were played later as cover ups.

Guy's tapes that he put out in the early 80s were highly creditable .......

Amongst many of the tapes that I got from Rod Dearlove in the 80's is this belter:

R L Griffin - Cry,cry,cry

William Bell - Every day will be like a holiday

Willie Clayton - Show and tell

Willie Clayton - Weak for you

Little Milton - I'm at the end of my rainbow

Luther Ingram - Baby don't go too far

Marvin Sease - Ghetto man

Roy C - She's a lady

Prince Phillip Mitchell - In her own way

Dee Edwards - Without love there's no world

Attraction - Greatest love affair

Bobby Bland - Angel

On the other side there is 20 Northern tracks which I might list if I can be bothered but absolute top quality sounds every one of them.

My old mate Andy Dennison , ( The Musselburgh Maestro ! ) gave me a copy of Colin Law's tape of his current sounds / playlist from the mid 80's ,

Colin was rocking the dancefloor of Glenrothes YMCA at the time amongst other places ,

I still play this tape now even after nearly 25 yrs ,

Lost Soul , The Gilettes , Sam Dees , The Allen Sisters , Jackie Follet , they're all on it, it is a belter of a collection of sounds from Stafford onwards !

I used to swap tapes with Guy in the 70s.

One of the best I got givin was off Soul Sam 1980, 60s on one side 70s on the other.

I got a few of Martin Koppel in the 80s.

In the early 90s Tim Brown used to tape his sets to play in his car, and when he had finished with them he give them to me. :)

I stumbled across a tape I got in the early 90's from local guy, John Higgins, about a month ago. It included stuff like - Betty Turner - Winds kept laughing; Blue Jays - Point of view; Solitaires - Fool that I am; Paul Thomson - Special kind of woman; Ruby Andrews - Just loving you; Tony Clarke - Wrong man; The Fiestas - Think smart, etc.

Another couple of great tapes that spring to mind are the ones I got from John Kingan @ a Cleethorpes weekender in the mid-nineties and another from the tail end of the Claremont Hotel nights that I got from Keith Money. Just wish I knew where I put these two bl**dy tapes  .

so many fantastic and inspiring tapes from various different people over the years, but if it would have to be just one then it would have to be a tape recording of detroit a-go-go from a mate who was "king amongst the poor" because he had that LP. Thats 25 years ago now and the "inpsiration" still lasts on!

Kitch's 'Sounds For Today' tape of the early 90s was certainly "all killer, no filler". Binsy did me a marvellous collection of largely Japanese-only soul in the 80s.

Thanks Gareth, Frankie Gearing, Tommy Tate and Chuck Armstrong if I remember rightly.

Dave Molloy made me a fantastic tape at Stafford. It had the Linda Jones Neptune singles, Dee Dee Warwick- foolish Fool, Harold Melvin- Be for real, and plenty of other gems.

Had quite a few tapes off Phil Wainwright in the 9t's and also a superb tape off Alex Jones around the same time. Execellent tapes with loads of semi unknowns at the time putting me on to some great tunes. Both lads have got amazing collections and great taste and will always be held with the highest respect!!!

Had to be a tape off Gilly in the early 90's. No track listing, took me years to work out what they were. Many of 'em only emerged as massive sounds years later. Superb taste, always ahead of the game.

" " " - Let me render my service to you

Young Bros-Whats your game

" " " -Baby

Jackey Beavers-Love that never grows old

Gentlemen Four-You can,t keep a bood man down

Bobby Kline-Both sides

Dynamic 3-She said yes

Fascinators-In other words

Cleveland Wilson-I,m shooting high

and a record by The Limelights-Can,t say no to my baby which I think was an unissued thing that was absolutely brilliant, Does anyone know what happened to it cos I,ve heard nothing of it since.

Second tape about 1992 including

The Sweets-Something bout my baby

Sandy Golden-When we,re all alone

Alternative Professionals-Thats why I love you

Tranells-I,m Blessed with a love (Philadelphians)

and loads of other tremendous things (can,t get it back off Gaz Simon) including a tremendous crossover thing called I think "Baby don,t you do it" I have lost the listing but I think it was another unissued thing like the Limelights. I think there was some debate about it a while back but does anyone know what happened to it, would sound magnificent played out nowadays.

Ady Crosdell gave me a tape with Gerri Granger "why can't it be tonight" on it in the early 90s (about 1991 or 92)

I had asked him over and over again for it on tape so i could hear it at home.

He walked over to me in the 100 club about 4 in the morning - passed it to me - and said to me in no uncertain terms " dont you copy this to anyone!"

And do you know what. I never did !

Not to one person !

I have still got the tape. And it is still a great Latin Soul record !

Thanks Ady.

Rob Marriott tapes were astoundingly good , also Ady Pountain , Binsy Taylor ,Ivor Jones , Rob Moss and John " Kipper " Kerr .I've learned so much from tapes , in fact I've still got a tape player in my car , still playing through them after all these years and discovering records I'd overlooked.Best,Eddie

anyone remember the 'rare soul' tapes of monster sounds sold at nighters in the mid eighties?

tapes like these were the only way to hear tracks like 'pyramid' back then.

Do you mean the ones made by dick coombes, had great modern one 'mind and matter' 'woman' etc
